Joseph Benavidez will get his shot at becoming a UFC champion, but it won’t be against Henry Cejudo.

According to a report from MMA Junkie, the UFC is looking to strip Cejudo of the 125-pound championship. In turn, the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion is also eying a fight between Benavidez and Deiveson Figueiredo for the vacant strap. The bout would take place at UFC on ESPN+ 27 from the Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Virginia on February 29.

Benavidez is currently on a three-fight win streak coming off a TKO win over Jussier Formiga at UFC on ESPN 3 in June. He’ll take on Figueiredo, who holds a professional record of 17-1 in MMA, coming off a first-round submission win over Tim Elliott at UFC on ESPN+ 19 in October. Cejudo hasn’t fought since June when he beat Marlon Moraes to claim the vacant bantamweight title.

Cejudo has sounded less than excited about the possibility of cutting down to 125 pounds again, and has thrust all his energy into landing a potential title defense against Jose Aldo at 135 pounds come 2020. “Triple C” hasn’t fought since his win over Moraes earlier this year, nursing injuries. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Cejudo’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, says nothing has been finalized just yet, but the camp doesn’t seem too concerned about being stripped.

“We haven’t been told anything official yet, but the UFC got to do what they got to do,” Abdelaziz said. “We move on.”

What do you make of the UFC’s decision to strip Cejudo of the 125-pound title?

Joseph Benavidez has caught wind of UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo calling out Jose Aldo – and he’s not happy.

Benavidez has certainly put himself in the conversation for the next shot at the 125-pound title. However, with Cejudo now angling for a bantamweight title defense upon his return, it’s clear the flyweight title picture will continue to be held up even longer if Cejudo is allowed to retain his status as the division’s champion.

Taking to Twitter, Benavidez ripped into Cejudo for calling out Aldo, suggesting it’s clear “Triple C” doesn’t want to fight him.

“It’s obvious you don’t want to fight me and have no interest of going back down to flyweight. Just stop stringing shit along with the company and the division. I’m ready to Fight!”

Aldo comes off a controversial decision loss to Marlon Moraes at UFC 245 over the weekend (December 14, 2019) which many thought he should’ve won. Cejudo seems dead set on fighting Aldo in Brazil come 2020, and UFC president Dana White likes what he hears. With that being said, it seems like there’s a very strong possibility that Cejudo faces Aldo upon his return from injury in early 2020.

Henry Cejudo is not interested in fighting Joseph Benavidez and defending the flyweight title next. Instead, he wants to fight either Frankie Edgar or Dominick Cruz.

Why he wants to fight at bantamweight is simple. Making 125-pounds is hard for him and he prefers to fight at 135-pounds.

“Dana can say what he wants, and he’s the president and what not, but when you own two weight classes, when you have some kingdoms, I think I have the leverage,” Cejudo said on Brendan Schaub on the “Food Truck Diaries,” (via MMA Junkie). “No one’s going to force me to fight someone that I don’t want.

“Cutting weight is hard for me, man. Making ’25 is hard. My debut in the UFC, I didn’t make weight. I didn’t make weight a few times in my fighting career trying to make ’25.”

If he does stay at bantamweight, he has two fighters in mind, and they are, Frankie Edgar and Dominick Cruz. Even though Benavidez has a win over him, Cejudo says the weight cut is not worth it for him, so he believes his career will end at bantamweight.

“I like Frankie Edgar. I like the Dominick Cruz right now,” Cejudo said. “That’s what’s jumping at me. As much as Joe does have a victory over me … but at the end of the day, it’s cutting the weight, man – especially being up at ’35 and then feeling good, and having a good camp, and just being more happy. Be more happy, literally – like, I cut 25 pounds to get down to ’25.

“I’m going to end up finishing my career at bantamweight, 100 percent.”

If he does not defend the flyweight belt, there is a very good chance he would be forced to vacate the title. Then, Benavidez would fight someone for the vacant title.
