TJ Dillashaw won’t be able to compete until 2021. And it’s only burning him inside further after his last outing in the Octagon.

Dillashaw was knocked out by Henry Cejudo in his attempt to become flyweight champion earlier this year. After the fight, he vacated his bantamweight title as he tested positive for EPO and was suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for two years.

Cejudo would go on to claim the vacant bantamweight crown by knocking out Marlon Moraes — something which only makes Dillashaw want to run things back even more:

“I definitely have some animosity towards myself, towards the sport, just everything,” Dillashaw told Chael Sonnen in a recent video (via MMA Junkie). “I have some enemies that are definitely going to stay my enemies for the rest of my life. I wouldn’t say it’s because (Cejudo) is a (expletive) talker, it’s more just the way he carries himself.

“It’s just something that I want back, not so much because he’s bad-mouthed or treated me a certain way. It’s just something that is burning inside of me, to get my belt back, to get that win back, to get back to where I need to be to get this thing behind me.”

As for Cejudo, the question now is which title he should defend next. Joseph Benavidez appears to be next in line at flyweight and for Dillashaw, that’s the fight that makes sense:

“I think it would be very dumb for Cejudo not to fight Joseph Benavidez,” Dillashaw explained. “That’s his last loss; that’s a fight that he has to make up. I think Joseph Benavidez has a great threat against him, too. That’s the fight that needs to happen, and he can’t be calling himself ‘Triple C’ no more if he’s going to be giving up a belt, so he needs to go down there and get it done and fight Joseph Benavidez.

“I think that’s the next fight for him. It makes the most sense. It’s the biggest draw. It’s a fight that was close, but Joseph did edge that fight out.”

Joseph Benavidez Calls For Henry Cejudo To Defend Or Vacate Flyweight Title

Joseph Benavidez has sent a simple message to Henry Cejudo.

Cejudo is the flyweight and bantamweight champion but has been told he has to defend the flyweight belt next. However, ‘Triple C’ has been calling out bantamweights which has frustrated Benavidez.

“Cejudo is out there being weird,” Benavidez told MMA Fighting. “I actually did comment on one of his things the other day. It wasn’t crazy – I just said, ‘Stop asking who’s next when you’re making videos every day and you know it’s me.’ You’ve been told it’s me”

Even though the UFC has told Cejudo he needs to defend the flyweight belt, Joseph Benavidez is still worried the fight won’t happen.

“For me, there’s still an option of him not doing [the fight],” Benavidez admitted. “There’s a percentage of that. “‘Triple C,’ I don’t think he’d want to give up a ‘C’ or the chance to avenge a loss, but now it’s working on a timeline. When is he going to be healthy? When can he give a word about defending?

“Because I don’t want to wait until February, and he says he’s ready to fight, but it’s not going to be at 125. That’s what I’m trying to avoid right now.”

If the fight between Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo does not happen, he expects ‘Triple C’ to relinquish the title.

“We know the deal — it’s defend or relinquish,“ Benavidez said. “So let’s get a timeline now of when will he have to make a decision to defend. Because I’m OK with waiting, but to what end if it goes past a year and the guy ends up relinquishing the title, when we could have got things going in the division to keep momentum.”

Do you think Henry Cejudo’s next fight will be against Joseph Benavidez?

Despite his impressive win streak, Henry Cejudo isn’t a different fighter according to former title challenger Joseph Benavidez.

UFC president Dana White recently revealed his plan was for Cejudo to defend his flyweight title next. Benavidez is the only challenger that makes sense at this point, and even holds a win over Cejudo.

That was back in 2016 when he outpointed “The Messenger” in a split decision win. Since then, Cejudo has gone on a five-fight winning streak which includes wins over Demetrious Johnson, TJ Dillashaw and Marlon Moraes.

However, Benavidez doesn’t think Cejudo has really changed his game compared to when they first fought:

“(He’s) not very different, honestly,” Benavidez told MMA Junkie. “His confidence has probably grown, because of what he’s accomplished. But it’s hard to say. He fought me really good. I fought DJ really good. … He just maybe executed a few little things better against DJ that probably wouldn’t work well on me.

“… He dominated (Sergio) Pettis and (Jussier) Formiga. He was really good when he fought me. He was really good in those fights. Just, the name he went and beat after that. Went and beat DJ. He’s really good, but I don’t think he looked different than he did in my fight. He looked really good in my fight, too. We just had a little more back-and-forth.

“Then he went and knocked out T.J. That was a thing. He got a good win, but it’s like, how did he look in that fight? We don’t know. He ended it in 30 seconds. Props to him.”

Even if Cejudo has improved, the same can be said for Benavidez. That is why he is confident of getting another win over the Olympian:

“I’ve gotten better, too,” Benavidez explained. “There was just little things, but I think 100 percent I can (beat him). That fight (the first bout), it was a stand-up war. He was basically trying to match volume for volume and clean strikes for clean strikes. We stayed in each other’s face, and no one really beats me at that game.

“So, yeah, I think I can beat him there. And then there’s even little adjustments that you can make to even make sure I beat him again.”
