Joseph Benavidez has pitched his case as to why he should be the No. 1-contender in the UFC flyweight division.

Benavidez told Submission Radio that he believes that he’s next in line against UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo when he returns to action:

“You look at the number one guy at bantamweight, which would be Aljamain Sterling. And you look at the number one guy in flyweight, which would be me and Formiga. And having me come out of that, I make more sense than anybody right now.

If he’s the real double champ and wanting to defend at both weights, it’s the flyweight’s turn to get the action. He hasn’t fought in there, it’s been a while since he fought in there, since he did bantamweight last, and I just make the most sense. Nobody else has history with Cejudo – and not only history, a win over him. So that’s what makes the most sense, is no one can say they’ve got a win over him.”

There are a few hurdles that Benavidez must get past in order for this to happen. Benavidez is expected to face Jussier Formiga in a rematch on June 29 at UFC Minneapolis. Many would consider this as a No. 1-contender’s fight, but it won’t be an easy task for the title contender.

Cejudo also has options as he could defend his titles in either weight class. He has expressed an interest in becoming a three-division champion and could jump to featherweight as well.

There is some history between Cejudo and Benavidez, who already holds a win over “Triple C” as he beat him via controversial split decision in 2016. It should be noted that Cejudo just underwent shoulder surgery and is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year.

Joseph Benavidez is surprised by the fact it took as long as it did for USADA to catch TJ Dillashaw.

The former UFC flyweight title contender sounded off on an issue that many fighters, fans, and media members have already given. Now, it’s Benavidez’s turn to give his take. Dillashaw recently accepted a two-year suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Dillashaw was caught with EPO in his system and is ineligible to compete until January 2021.

During a recent interview, the top flyweight made it known that he wasn’t surprised at all by the news. He also thinks that all of the criticism that Dillashaw has received is deserved.

“I wasn’t surprised at all that he finally got caught,” Benavidez told MMAJunkie. “Wasn’t surprising at all. There’s nothing I can really say as far as, like, that hasn’t already been said. I’m not gonna sit here and say the guy is this and that because if you look at the internet and everyone, it’s already been said. So there’s nothing worse you can say than what everyone already thinks, which I think is warranted. Everything that people are out there giving him, it’s 100 percent warranted for what he did.”

Consequences

According to Benavidez, he thinks that this news just goes to show the true character of Dillashaw. He also thinks that Dillashaw should be happy, as he got off easy from USADA.

“It just goes to show, there’s consequences for what you do and you can’t hide who you are forever,” Benavidez said. “I’m surprised it took that long for him to get caught, and hid what he’s about this long. But you can’t hide that stuff forever. It’s great that it came out. There are consequences and if anything, I don’t think the consequences are that much.

“It’s not that bad. Get some surgeries. You got paid the day after the fight anyway. So it’s not like you’re getting suspended for the year. But like I said, it’s all the other things. All the disgrace and everything that is warranted, and maybe hurts more. Like I said, the truth will come out at some point and you can’t hide that stuff forever.”

Benavidez is expected to face Jussier Formiga in a rematch on June 29, 2019, at UFC Minneapolis.

Joseph Benavidez wasn’t exactly taken aback by T.J. Dillashaw’s failed drug test.

Dillashaw relinquished his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gold after being hit with a one-year suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) for a failed drug test. Things went from bad to worse as the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspended Dillashaw for two years due to EPO use.

Benavidez Weighs In On Dillashaw’s Failed Drug Test

Benavidez is a former teammate of Dillashaw. In an interview with MMA Junkie, Benavidez said Dillashaw’s anti-doping violation wasn’t difficult to see coming (via MMAFighting.com):

“I wasn’t surprised at all that he finally got caught. Wasn’t surprising at all. There’s nothing I can really say as far as, like, that hasn’t already been said. Benavidez is scheduled to take on Jussier Formiga on June 29 at UFC on ESPN 4. UFC president Dana White has said the winner of that bout will get a title opportunity, but he wasn’t clear on if it would be for the flyweight or bantamweight gold.

The UFC’s flyweight division has been in doubt for quite some time. After having several flyweights laid off, and Henry Cejudo now jumping up to challenge for a 135-pound title, the future of the division remains in question.

However, longtime competitor Joseph Benavidez will be competing against Jussier Formiga in a title eliminator at UFC on ESPN 4. Should Cejudo ever return to 125 pounds, the winner will likely get the next shot at his title. Speaking to MMA Junkie recently, Benavidez commented on the future of the division given the circumstances.

Benavidez said he believes the division is being set up for failure:

“Even if there is a title fight, which I think there will be, I mean, if Henry loses, he’s still going to be like ‘I’m the ’25 champ, you’re not getting rid of me,’ he has to defend it,” Benavidez said.

“But then, I kind of look at the state of the rest of the division, like, it’s getting set up for failure and being dissolved, because, there’s no one to defend it with after that. Me and Formiga are up there; who am I going to defend it against after that?

“Me and Formiga are out there as the No. 1 contenders to fight Henry, but Henry wins, I win, who are we going to fight after that, each other?”

What do you think about Benavidez saying the flyweight division is being set up for failure?
