It was announced earlier this week that Diego Sanchez had been released from the UFC, Sanchez was scheduled to fight Donald Cerrone on May 8 but that fight was scrapped.

Sanchez’s fight with Cerrone was called off after Sanchez’s team refused to clarify whether the UFC legend was suffering from either short-term or long-term medical issues.

Sanchez did still receive his full fight purse, win bonus and apparel pay from UFC officials for his bout with Cerrone.

Now former UFC fighter, Josh Thomson has spoke on the issue on an episode of his ‘Weighing In’ podcast with John McCarthy.

“I feel for Diego. I want everything to be good for Diego. Okay and Diego makes some very good points. The UFC, because it is like we’ve talked about before, the UFC is not gonna reply to him.” Thomson said. “We have talked about it with what is his name… Spencer Fisher. Same thing, like they (the UFC) just stop picking up your calls. They are not going to pick up your calls. Their doctors are not going to answer your calls anymore. You’re not a current fighter. There is no relationship anymore. And so that is the one thing, that if we are ever going to do a union for, it is for this.”

Diego Sanchez’s relationship with the UFC turned sour after his coach, Joshua Fabia asked the UFC to provide medical records for Sanchez.

Fabia has slammed by members of the MMA community following Sanchez’s release. UFC boss Dana White labelled Fabia a ‘creepy weirdo.’ And former UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion, Rashad Evans pleaded with Sanchez to get rid of Fabia.

Josh Thomson then went on to explain further about how fighters like Sanchez are going to want medical assurances once they officially leave the UFC.

“Now you’re going to start seeing some of these fighters, especially the top ones that have been around for a long time, they are going to want to be able to come back and get some form of medical help for everything that is going on with them, and it is not going to happen. So when we talk about like the Ali Act, I could give two shits about the Ali Act, I care more about let’s get some sort of insurance fund for the fighters for after.”

Do you think fighters should be given medical assurances after competing in the UFC?

Diego Sanchez and his coach, Josh Fabia, have faced a lot of criticism coming off of UFC Rio Rancho this past weekend.

Sanchez’s corner audio was released and transcribed from his fight with Michel Pereira this past weekend, and Fabia was giving Sanchez some odd and unorthodox advice in between rounds. There didn’t seem to be any technical advice for Sanchez, who was losing the fight on the scorecards, but more spiritual-type advice.

With that being said, Sanchez went on to win the fight after Pereira nailed him with an illegal shot on the canvas. Sanchez took the disqualification victory and the criticism in the process. Now, the longtime UFC veteran has taken to social media to respond to the backlash his coaching has received. Here’s what he had to say:

“School of Self-Awareness is exactly why I have had a record low damage since he has coached. I guess you are just not aware enough to see the change in my movement?? Probably didn’t notice thee size difference or the age?? But hey maybe your a great coach or trainer. How many thousands have trusted you for their better wellbeing?

“My guy has trained enough to help anyone from me to you my friend. Maybe you could be ok with me being me and making my own decisions. Oh how come you all don’t attack any other coaches for the athletes performance @gregjacksonmma or @jacksonwink_mma never were blamed for my performance but they always got credit for any successes.

“Speak truth. The real question to all you haters is why does @joshuafabiaknowbody bother you…What’s you real problem??? Honestly you guys may need @schoolofselfawareness more than you realize #truth”

Longtime MMA coach Trevor Wittman, who was a part of the UFC Rio Rancho broadcast, was voicing his concern with Sanchez’s cornering throughout the fight. He was amazed that Fabia told him he won the first round, and was also shocked at the lack of technical advice being given in between rounds. Before the illegal knee, all three judged has Pereira up 20-18. It will be interesting to see if Sanchez sticks with his one-man corner moving forward.

What do you think about Sanchez coming to the defense of his coach?

Diego Sanchez certainly received some strange advice from his lone cornerman during his welterweight bout with Michel Pereira.

The pair collided in the co-main event of UFC Rio Rancho last night with Pereira mostly dominating proceedings throughout the contest. However, an illegal knee on Sanchez in the third round allowed the veteran to get the disqualification victory after he craftily decided not to continue.

That wasn’t the only talking point of the fight, however. Many observed the advice Sanchez received from his new coach Josh Fabia in between rounds. Fabia received plenty of flak in Sanchez’s previous defeat to Michael Chiesa for not giving any real technical advice.

More of the same followed in the Pereira fight (via Bloody Elbow):

Fabia to Sanchez: “Five recovery breaths. Five recovery breaths.”

“Sip the water. Breathe in. Good.”

“Five recovery breaths! In the nose, out the mouth.”

“Listen carefully. Listen carefully. You are stopping your motion. Do not wait to see your work. I need forward, forward pressure. I need you to get off the line before you attack. Off the line before you attack.”

“Bee drill. Bee drill. Think of the shadow. Shadow!”

“I need you to get in. Get in, get behind. If it gets tight, if it gets sticky, take him to the ground.”

“Get on top. Give me some ride time. Give me some ground and pound.”

MMA coach Trevor Wittman gave his thoughts on Fabia’s advice in the broadcast during the second round:

“Uhh. Strange. Listening to that last corner work was very strange. I mean, I don’t know if it was code, or what, but he was talking about being tight and sticky, keep the movement, but don’t keep the movement like… This is — I’ve known Diego for a long period of time. This is just very strange to me.”

“He’s tough, he’s always got the heart to fight, but again, I don’t see what’s going on right now. For me it’s hard to watch because I know Diego, I know how good he is, his wrestling. I feel like he has to go forward, fight! Make it a fight. Sitting on the outside, he is just going to take damage and it is hard to watch.”

Sanchez was outclassed in the second round with Pereira landing a big takedown just as it came to a close. The advice from Fabia didn’t get any better either.

Fabia: “Listen to me. You need to go, alright? You need to go. I need to see you go swinging. You know why? Because you’ve got nothing to lose now.”

“He just won that round with that throw. You had the other round on points, on contact. Alright?”

Sanchez: “Okay. Yup.”

Fabia: “So you’ve got to get a takedown. You’ve got to hold him down. You’ve got to work this motherf—ker over. You hear me?”

Sanchez: “Yes. Yes, sir.”

Fabia: “You’ve got to do your fucking job. Get to work. Alright?”

Sanchez: “Yes, sir.”

Fabia: “Quit acting like you don’t know how to do it. Do not let him trigger you —”

In the end, Sanchez was able to get the win but not in the way many had expected.

What did you think of the corner advice Sanchez received?
