Joshua Pacio, the reigning champion from the Philippines, entered the bout well-known for his dynamic striking and well-rounded skill set. Pacio sought to defend his title and solidify his legacy as one of the greatest strawweights in ONE Championship history. He previously regained his belt in March 2024 after Brooks was disqualified for an illegal slam during their rematch.

Jarred Brooks, the American interim champion, came into the fight with a renowned background in wrestling. Brooks had claimed the interim title with a decisive victory over Gustavo Balart in August 2024. This trilogy bout at ONE 171 offered him a chance to reclaim undisputed status in the division after losing to Pacio under controversial circumstances.

The stakes were high as both fighters aimed to settle their rivalry once and for all. Their first meeting in December 2022 saw Brooks win via unanimous decision. In a rematch, Brooks lost the title due to an illegal slam. Now the two face off in a trilogy showdown with the world title on the line.

The US-born Brook quickly earned a takedown and advanced to side control. From there, he began landing ground and pound then began looking for an arm triangle submission which Pacio used to get back to his feet and secure a takedown of his own but Brooks slipped in a guillotine choke. Both men survive to fight in the next round.

Pacio caught a body kick from Brooks and landed a straight which knocked down the interim champion while he was on one leg. From top position in full guard, the Filipino-born Pacio began attacking with ground and pound to the body and head. With a flurry of punches, Pacio was able to defeat Brooks via TKO in the second round at 4:22.

ONE Championship was back in Qatar this week, where the Lusail Sports Arena played host to a number of intriguing battles across four different sports.

Asia’s premier martial arts organization brought with it to the Middle East a deep lineup, filled with champions and plenty of prominent names in MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing and submission grappling.

And there were championship stakes in the first of those sports that headlined ONE 171, with Filipino strawweight kingpin Joshua Pacio and American standout Jarred Brooks completing their trilogy by unifying the title.

While “The Monkey God” dethroned “The Passion” back in 2022, the rematch saw the belt return to Pacio after Brooks was disqualified for an illegal slam. Having since captured the interim strap with a first-round submission of Gustavo Balart last August, Brooks had his sights on regaining undisputed status.

But the American failed in that regard, with Pacio overcoming a strong start from his challenger to find the TKO finish late in the second frame.

Gold from a different sport was also be on the line in Qatar. After losing his Muay Thai strap in Denver last year, Jonathan Haggerty ensured he kept hold of his remaining title by defending the bantamweight kickboxing championship against Chinese challenger Wei Rui.

Elsewhere, former two-division KSW champion Roberto Soldi? made his long-awaited return, Kill Cliff FC standout Aung La N Sang added a 46th fight to his illustrious record, ex-bantamweight kingpin Bibiano Fernandes closed out his career with one last bout and submission grappling star Kade Ruotolo competed in MMA for the third time.

Team Lakay did not want to start the year by losing two of their World Titles six days apart. However, Joshua “The Passion” Pacio lost his ONE Strawweight World Title to Yosuke “Tobizaru” Saruta and then a week later Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio surrendered his ONE Flyweight World Title to Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes.

Needless to say, things didn’t exactly pan out the way Team Lakay had hoped.

Despite this, coach Mark Sangiao’s confidence and faith in his athletes to become World Champions once more has not wavered. Pacio, in particular, still has room for improvement under Sangiao’s guidance.

“It’s difficult and heartbreaking for me to see my athlete who worked really hard lose. But like what we always say, we either win or we learn,” said Sangiao.

“With Joshua, it was really close, he could’ve won. He won the striking department but I’m not sure how the judges scored the takedowns, that could have been the reason why we lost. But I have faith in Joshua that he will come back and become a World Champion again.”

Pacio did his best to defend his title against Saruta in Jakarta last 19 January but Saruta’s grappling skills outshined the Baguio City native’s striking. With the split decision ruling in favor of the Japanese warrior, Sangiao came up with a plan to improve his ward Pacio.

“We will prepare and train Joshua according to his performance and the result of his match,” said Sangiao

“We saw what Joshua lacked to win so we will work on those. We will make Joshua a complete martial artist. It will be a different Joshua that you will see in the rematch. That is what I want to do for Joshua.”

ONE CEO and founder Chatri Sityodtong shared his personal opinion about the matchup, disagreeing with the judges’ decision that crowned Saruta as the new ONE Strawweight World Champion. Sityodtong then promised the press that a rematch between the Team Lakay stalwart and Saruta will happen in the near future.

“We will definitely welcome a rematch and I can confidently say the result will be different. Next time, we won’t leave the fight at the hands of the judges,” Sangiao concluded.

“I always tell my athletes to love what you do and do not give up. Just always remember to work hard and work smart.”
