Coming off a lopsided decision loss to Nunes in the rematch, Pena lost out her UFC women’s bantamweight throne at UFC 277. Pena had shocked the world in their first outing by finishing arguably the greatest female mixed martial artist of all time. Her defeat in the second match has the ladies evenly matched up with each of them getting a win.

Julianna Pena calls for trilogy fight with Amanda Nunes

Nunes switched her game plan for the main event last month, utilizing a southpaw heavy stance and a different fighting style. Her changes certainly worked as she avenged her loss with a dominant victory that saw her break the women’s record for the most knockdowns in a round.

During Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 40 post-fight show, Julianna Pena called for a decisive third fight with Nunes.

“When someone has entirely revamped and completely switched their entire stance, and their entire fighting style because of me, I take that as a complement, you know?” Pena said (ht MMA Junkie). “And I think that if you give me time to get ready for both stances of Amanda, she doesn’t touch me next time. I’m just really hoping that she heals up and that she’s able to get back in there before the end of the year because I’ll absolutely be ready for that trilogy fight.”

Pena is ready to start round 8 with Nunes after sharing seven rounds with her in the past two showings.

“I’m ready to go Round 8 right now, like, let’s freakin’ go. I’m here, where you at Amanda? Amanda, seriously, where you at?” Pena said. “You left your girl hanging out there. I showed up for Team Peña, she didn’t show up for Team Nunes. I’m here, I’m ready to go Round 8.”

Nunes took back her bantamweight title against Julianna Pena at UFC 277. In their first matchup, Pena had gotten the best of the striking exchanges, opening up the choke that she used to win the fight. This time around, it was a different story. Nunes opened up early on Pena, causing Pena to walk out of their fight with some war scars.

The fight wasn’t particularly a close one on the scorecards, but Pena had Nunes in trouble with a few submission attempts. Nunes scored three knockdowns in bout, and was able to take down Pena six times throughout the fight. One judge even went as far as scoring the bout 50-43 on the side of Nunes. It was just the the third title fight that had a score of 50-43.

Nunes went on record, claiming that she could have finished Pena in the fight. Pena’s teammate Muhammad, took offense to Nunes’ claims.

Belal Muhammad believes that Pena was in a few good positions to beat Nunes for a second time

“There’s moments in the fight where Julianna could have won that fight,” Muhammad said on Instagram. “Amanda I felt like, is getting too cocky. She’s getting too arrogant saying, ‘I could have finished her in the first round if I wanted to, but I wanted to go five rounds, so I could show her who’s better,’ blah, blah, blah. Get out of here with that. You couldn’t finish her.”

Muhammad pointed out that Nunes even left the event on crutches and took some bad shots as well. He alluded that Nunes only decided to wrestle in the later rounds, due to how hard Pena hits and didn’t want to get caught like she had in the first fight.
