Miesha Tate is looking to dethrone the champion and number one woman’s pound for pound fighter Valentina Shevchenko, much liked Julianna Pena did to Amanda Nunes.

Tate first came back to try and reclaim her bantamweight championship she once had, but is now shifting her focus to another GOAT, Shevchenko. Shevchenko has dominated the Flyweight division and had her closest fight in quite sometime at UFC 275 against Taila Santos. She won that fight by split decision and an accidental head butt may have been the difference maker in the fight.

Tate returned to the UFC after a five year layoff and was defeated by Ketlen Vieira in her first fight back in the octagon. The bout was a close one, but unfortunately for Tate, she walked away the loser of the fight. After seeing her close friend take out Nunes in the biggest upset in UFC history, Tate shifted her focus and now has no intention of making another run at bantamweight.

Miesha Tate was interviewed by MMA Fighting when she touched upon the possibility of going after Valentina Shevchenko

“I would have loved to have a rematch with Amanda, but I feel like Julianna getting it done the way she did, I got my fulfillment from that,” Tate said on Wednesday. “Now, I want to take out the other GOAT.” (H/T MMAFighting)

Tate is looking forward to the move down to 125 and even believes it may even be a quicker road to a title shot in that division, compared to the 135 pound division.

“I said, ‘Well, which one’s going to get me to the title faster?’ He seemed to think that 125 was going to get me faster, and I said, ‘You know what? It makes a lot of sense.’ Julianna has the title right now at 135. This sets me up perfectly, and who wouldn’t want to fight Valentina with all that she’s accomplished.”

UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Julianna Peña is impressed with how recently crowned strawweight champion Carla Esparza has handled herself since winning the belt.

The 32-year-old was recently asked by The Schmo for her thoughts on “The Cookie Monster”. Esparza defeated Rose Namajunas at UFC 274 to reclaim the strawweight title she originally won in 2014 at the conclusion of The Ultimate Fighter Season 20.

Peña was quick to praise the 34-year-old for her ability to persevere and get her belt back, as well as how she’s conducted her business as champion so far.

“I love Carla, you know what I mean?” Peña said. “I won The Ultimate Fighter then she won it right after me. I love that she’s Latina and love that she is able to go in there and win her belt back. I thought it was very inspiring and I loved what she did. And do whatever the champ wants, whoever you wanna fight. I like that she’s standing up and says, ‘I call the shots here’.

There’s no date or opponent set for Esparza’s first title defense yet, but many assume former champion Zhang Weili is currently at the front of the line following her highlight-reel knockout of Joanna J?drzejczyk at UFC 275.

Esparza has so-far resisted being pressured into any matchup, and The Schmo mentioned that the 34-year-old recently suggested Marina Rodriguez as a possible challenger instead of Zhang. Peña thinks that Esparza has earned the right to make those calls for herself.

“Of course, everyone’s gonna be barking up at her, but she’s the queen, she decides, and she’s the one who’s gonna be able to decide who her next fight is and who’s deserving or not. And I definitely think that Marina is definitely deserving of that title shot as well. So, whatever Carla wants.”

Peña upset longtime women’s bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes at UFC 269 when she submitted the Brazilian in the second round. The two fighters coached opposite one another on the currently airing Season 30 of The Ultimate Fighter and are set to rematch at UFC 277 in July.

Even though The Ultimate Fighter helped launch her own UFC career, Julianna Peña thinks that the show could use a few changes.

The UFC women’s bantamweight champion coached against rival Amanda Nunes on the currently-airing 30th season of the UFC’s reality TV show. While Peña’s team has done quite well leading up to the semifinal matchups, there was some controversy on the show’s most recent episode.

Episode 8 featured the final quarterfinal bout between women’s flyweights Brogan Walker (Team Nunes) and Hannah Guy (Team Peña). While Walker won the first round comfortably, Team Peña’s Guy was dominant in the last few minutes of the second round and looked to have done enough to warrant a third round. The judges didn’t agree, and Walker earned the decision victory.

Speaking to The Schmo, Peña was asked about the episode and the judge’s decision end the fight after just two rounds.

“It’s crazy, I mean honestly these fights are nuts,” Peña answered. “You see what these judges are doing to these fighters? It’s horrible…These judges are ruining people’s lives. And I have one last thing to say on this for last week’s episode and this week’s episode. Real MMA fights are 3 rounds, not 2 rounds. And so it deserves to go to the third round in my opinion. But that’s just me.”

Peña could be seen discussing the decision with Dana White on the episode, and the UFC president seemingly agreed that there should have been a third round.

The Schmo suggested TUF could be used for the UFC to test open scoring, which “The Venezuelan Vixen” appeared open to before ultimately returning to her point about the exhibition format being an issue.

“I mean [open scoring] should absolutely be open for discussion. But the other thing that should be open for discussion is quit with these free exhibition matches on The Ultimate Fighter. They should be going three rounds no matter what. They’re free fights that they’re basically getting under these ‘exhibition’ rules. There’s no reason why all of these fights shouldn’t be going to three rounds.”

Peña and Nunes are serving as coaches on Season 30 of TUF as part of the leadup to their rematch for the women’s bantamweight title at UFC 277.

What do you think of Peña’s comments about TUF’s exhibition fights only being scheduled for two rounds?

Julianna Peña Considers Nunes’ Post-UFC 269 Behavior “Offensive”

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Peña thinks that Amanda Nunes hasn’t fully accepted her submission loss from UFC 269. UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Peña thinks that Amanda Nunes hasn’t fully accepted her submission loss from UFC 269.

Fresh off coaching The Ultimate Fighter Season 30, Peña did an interview with MMA Mania and discussed her upcoming rematch with the current UFC women’s featherweight champion. While the 32-year-old acknowledged that she’s expecting “the best Amanda Nunes we’ve ever seen” in July, Peña isn’t impressed with how Nunes has handled the result of their first fight.

“It’s offensive. She literally doesn’t believe that it happened,” Peña said. “She doesn’t want to admit that it happened. She wants to make every single excuse that she can so that she can tell herself and sleep at night, that that’s not the reality of what happened. So it can get her up in the morning, so that she can go and perform the next time and the next go around. So, she doesn’t believe that it happened. She’s not accepting it.”

“The Venezuelan Vixen” upset Nunes at UFC 269 to claim the women’s bantamweight title. While Nunes remained a UFC champion due to her also holding the women’s featherweight belt, the loss was notable given that the Brazilian was considered the top pound-for-pound female fighter in the sport.

Whatever Nunes may think about their first fight, Peña knows she backed up her own words in that bout and fully intends to do the same in the rematch.

“It’s offensive because I did everything that I said I was gonna do. I said I was gonna do this, and then I went out and I did it and you’re still not accepting it. Possession is nine-tenths of the law, this belt is mine. So come and get it. You want this? You want me to drop my swords? Come and take ‘em. I’m ready.”

Peña will defend her bantamweight title for the first time against Nunes in the main event of UFC 277.

What do you think of Peña’s claim that Nunes is in denial about the result of their first fight?
