It appears that we have our first bout revealed for the upcoming UFC 218 card.

Justin Gaethje has made it perfectly clear that he wants to be the next UFC lightweight champion. Although he only has one bout under his belt under the UFC banner, he will look to dethrone UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor if given the opportunity. A title fight might be down the line, but he has his next fight already lined up.

Since making his UFC debut earlier this year, fight fans have been waiting for the return of the former WSOF champion. Gaethje is one of the best-kept secrets in MMA. He scored a victory over Michael Johnson at the finale of The Ultimate Fighter season 25 in July. Shortly after that bout, the UFC decided to set him up to coach TUF 26 opposite Eddie Alvarez.

According to a report from BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor, a date has been made for the fight, which is UFC 218. Unfortunately, one of the negatives of this bout being added to the upcoming PPV (pay-per-view) event is the fact that it will not be the main event. No main event means no five round fight, which is a bummer considering that it should be a great fight that fans would love to see extended from three rounds to five.

Gaethje usually doesn’t need that long to finish his bouts. His last decision (one of two over his entire career) was back in 2014. On the flip side, Alvarez has gone to the scorecards a bit more.

UFC 218 will be held on December 2, 2017, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. It should be noted that this event doesn’t have a headlining fight attached. If you recall, UFC President Dana White has already gone on record by saying that the promotion attempted to set up Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title. Obviously, that bout isn’t happening thanks to Jones’ latest drug test failure.

Justin Gaethje Explains Why Conor McGregor ‘Can’t Fight Through’

Prior to being finished by Floyd Mayweather in the tenth round of their Aug. 26 boxing match, Conor McGregor had seemed to tire, and in the aftermath of the fight, he admitted that this theory was true, while also admitting that he has had to deal with ‘patches of fatigue’ in some of his previous fights.

Why this is the case is unclear, but UFC lightweight contender Justin Gaethje feels as if the “Notorious” one’s cardio issues may be due to his lack of experience in grappling and wrestling:

“The reason he can’t fight through when he gets super tired is he’s never grappled,” Gaethje said during the promotion lunch for TUF 26 (via MMA Fighting). “You have to learn how to fight through when it sucks and it’s really hard. You have to be in that position over and over and over, to be able to perform in that mindset. The fact that he’s never wrestled or grappled, it doesn’t help when he gets super tired and starts questioning himself.”

As a former NCAA Division I wrestler, perhaps Gaethje has a point, as McGregor’s background is more in the striking department.

Either way, the Irishman performed better against Mayweather than most had expected him to, and Gaethje doesn’t feel as if MMA has suffered as a whole due to McGregor coming up short in his bid against “Money”:

“If he goes in there and gets knocked out, yeah MMA takes a hit. But it’s not gonna hurt us,” Gaethje said. “Because at the end of the day, all we have to say is, ‘Let’s have a real fight.’ In a real fight, in the street, when it comes to life and death, an MMA fighter will win 90 percent of the time against just a boxer. I’m content and comfortable with that.”

McGregor, who hasn’t competed in the Octagon since scoring a second round TKO victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 last November, is expected to return to MMA later this year or early next year.

Gaethje, on the other hand, is set to face off against Alvarez after the current season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) concludes.

Justin Gaethje has made it perfectly clear that he wants to fight UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

The problem is, everyone else in the lightweight division wants a piece of McGregor. However, unlike the other fighters who want a piece of McGregor, Gaethje has a plan for making the fight happen.

Gaethje’s plan is to score a vicious knockout of Eddie Alvarez at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale on Dec. 1. If he can be able to do that then he believes it will get McGregor’s attention.

For those who might not know, Gaethje and Alvarez are coaching opposite one another on this season of TUF, which has already premiered on FOX Sports 1. The latest season of the reality show will crown the UFC’s first women’s flyweight champion.

“McGregor, when he comes back, he’s gonna pick whoever he wants,” Gaethje said Wednesday at a media lunch in Century City (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “As the competitor that I see him being, he’s gonna want the most dangerous guy. When I finish Eddie Alvarez quickly, that’s gonna be me.

“On paper and on TV, I’m the most dangerous, violent guy in this division. Most hittable guy. So that’s probably someone he’d want to fight. As long as I knock out Eddie Alvarez quickly, that’s my goal — to get that fight.”

It’s believed that if or when McGregor returns to the UFC, he will fight the interim champion upon his return. That will either be Tony Ferguson or Kevin Lee, who fight for that belt in the main event of UFC 216 on Oct. 7 in Las Vegas.

“[McGregor] has to come back and he’s not gonna want to fight Tony Ferguson or Kevin Lee,” Gaethje said. “Being the crazy person I am, Eddie Alvarez and Conor make me nervous and make me lose sleep at night. I don’t lose any sleep when I think about Tony Ferguson or Kevin Lee. Not saying they can’t beat me or wouldn’t beat me. They just don’t do it for me. I would want someone who did it for me. It would be Khabib [Nurmagomedov] or Conor. I would love to go to Ireland.”

“He don’t give a f*ck about his belt, which is fine,” Gaethje said of McGregor. “Whatever. I don’t know. He loves it,” Gaethje said of McGregor. “He f*cking loves it, and he’s crazy like I am about this sport. It has to do it for him. Obviously, the pay has to be big, he’s a businessman. Smart businessman. But I don’t think that Ferguson or Lee would do it for him.”

The cast for the upcoming twenty-sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) has been announced.

The full list of female fighters who will compete to become the first-ever UFC women’s flyweight champion for coaches Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez was revealed during tonight’s (Sat., August 5, 2017) UFC Fight Night 114 from Arena Ciudad de México in Mexico City, Mexico.

Check out the lineup right here:

Most notable among the names listed is former Invicta FC flyweight champion Barb Honchak, who defended her belt twice and never lost it, but has been out of the sport for over two-and-half-years. It would have to be assumed that Honchak would be the overwhelming favorite to win the show, as Invicta is widely considered to be the clear number one source in terms of female MMA translating to the UFC.

Fan favorite Invicta veteran Roxanne Modafferi, who competed as a women’s bantamweight on The Ultimate Fighter 18 featuring Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate, will also cut down to 125 in an effort to become a UFC champion.

Rising lightweight star Gaethje will look to skyrocket into the top of the UFC 155-pound division when he meets former champion Eddie Alvarez at the conclusion of the show.
