Dustin Poirier promises blood and guts performance at UFC 291 I'm ready for war

Ahead of tonight’s massive symbolic BMF championship clash with fellow former interim lightweight titleholder, Justin Gaethje, fan-favorite veteran, Dustin Poirier has vowed to bring a “blood and guts” performance against the Arizona in their highly-anticipated rematch.

Poirier, the current number two ranked lightweight contender, enters tonight’s UFC 291 re-run with Gaethje holding distinct bragging rights, having previously landed a fourth round TKO win over the latter back in 2018 in their UFC Glendale main event clash.

And rekindling their rivalry tonight in Salt Lake City, Utah, Poirier and Gaethje clash for symbolic BMF title spoils, with the victor also likely booking themselves into the frame to fight the winner of an upcoming undisputed lightweight title rematch between champion, Islam Makhachev, and former titleholder, Charles Oliveira.

Dustin Poirier promises “blood and guts” display against Justin Gaethje

Sharing a tense face-off at last night’s official ceremonial weigh-ins ahead of UFC 291, Poirier previewed his pairing with Gaethje, insisting he is ready for “war” with the Arizonian if it arises tonight in ‘The Beehive State’.

“It means everything,” Dustin Poirier told UFC color-commentator, Joe Rogan. “Look, I’m ready for war, and I’ll see you in the trenches tomorrow. Thank you Salt Lake for coming, I had a great week here. I’m going to leave it all out there, I promise you. Blood and guts, let’s go.”

And prior to his BMF title rematch with Gaethje tonight, Poirier most recently turned in an impressive display against common-foe, Michael Chandler back in November at UFC 281, defeating the former lightweight title challenger with a third round rear-naked choke at Madison Square Garden.

As for Gaethje, the ONX Labs trainee turned in a close, majority decision win over Rafael Fiziev at UFC 286 back in March in a co-headliner in London, England.

This weekend, the rematch between Gaethje and Poirier is set for the mian event of UFC 291, with the ‘BMF’ title also up for grabs. The first fight was an instant classic, in which the pair would exchange artillery until it was Poire who would land the fatal blow, winning by fourth round TKO.

Five years on, the MMA community is once again geared up to watch what is almost guaranteed to be an entertaining scrap. Opinions seem is split for this one, and both camps are justified as once the pair get going expect both men to be able to find openings to take advantage of.

Robert Whittaker weighs in on UFC 291 main event

Whittake is no different to anyone else, struggling to pick a sees the contest to be extremely close.

Oh man, what a fight this is gonna be,” Whittaker said via the MMArcade podcast. “Oh yeah, and honestly? Out of the two guys, like honestly? Nobody wins this fight. Poirier and Gaethje, neither one of these dudes win this fight. This is gonna be that sort of fight, I feel it in my bones.” (H/T MMANews)

Contuning, Whittaker acknowledged that Gaethje has made significant improvements since the first fight, but still struggled to state a definitive answer. Both men are so evenly matched in not only their skill sets, but also their toughness and willingness to engage in a fire fight.

“This is a very different Gaethje than when they first fought,” said Whittaker. “If I was going to have to pick someone, if I was going to have to pick… This would be the one fight I think is where the closest fight you’d have to pick, that this could very well end in a draw.”

“Both guys are very happy to leave on their shield. Both guys are very good defensive strikers, both guys have excellent wrestling, takedown defence, and offensive wrestling. Both guys are tough as nails. They’re both very good at absorbing shots and firing shots. They’re very similar in styles to a degree.”

Dustin Poirier backed to hold power advantage over Justin Gaethje at UFC 291 every shot was thud Michael Chandler

A common-foe of both former interim lightweight champions, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje – Michael Chandler has claimed the former is the harder hitter between the duo, describing every shot he landed against him during their clash in November of last year hit with a “thud”.

Headlining UFC 291 this weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah, Poirier and Gaethje lock horns for the second time in their Octagon tenure, following an initial headliner atop a UFC Fight Night Pheonix card back in 2018.

Taking bragging rights into their UFC 291 rematch in ‘The Beehive State’, Poirier turned in a fourth round win over Gaethje, stopping the Arizona veteran with a series of strikes early in the frame en route to a standing TKO victory.

Dustin Poirier power touted as more severe than Justin Gaethje’s

And according to Chandler, who has suffered losses to both Poirier and Gaethje, the Lafayette striker is most definitely the more formidable puncher.

“As far as power, people ask me, ‘Who’s the hardest puncher that you’ve ever been hit by?’” Michael Chandler said on his YouTube channel. “Dustin Poirier – Dustin Poirier broke my nose in the fight. Every single shot was a thud. His ability – if you guys watch his training… go  watch his training on Instagram. His bag work, when you watch they way his hips, his feet, his shoulders, his core, everything turns on every single punch when he’s doing that bag work. That’s where he generates all of this power.”

Justin Gaethje has the speed advantage, but he kind of just throws those things as fast as he can, hopes they land, and when they do land, they hurt,” Chandler explained. “But, they’re less of a thud then Dustin Poirier’s. So the power lends itself toward Poirier, but the speed lends itself toward Justin Gaethje.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

UFC 291 Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje 2 Betting Preview

Taking main event honors in the promotion’s return to Salt Lake City, Utah, fierce lightweight contenders, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje renew their rivalry atop a UFC 291 flagship event – with vacant BMF championship spoils awaiting the victor of the pair’s long-awaited rematch.

Landing in ‘The Beehive State’ this weekend, the Octagon will feature a main card which promises to be action-packed – comprising of five former gold holders under the organization’s banner.

And taking main event status, a mouth-watering re-run of their 2018 battle in Phoenix, Arizona, former interim lightweight titleholders, Poirier and Gaethje end the night in Salt Lake City, with the winner landing symbolic BMF gold – previously only held by the recently retired, Jorge Masvidal.

Taking bragging rights into their headlining tilt, Poirier managed to land a fourth round standing TKO win over Arizona veteran, Gaethje back in 2018, en route to his eventual interim title win over former featherweight champion, Max Holloway.

And according to lines currently available at Betway, Poirier is sat as a -150 betting favorite to land a second career win over Gaethje – with the latter placed currently as a +120 betting underdog.

In terms of an interesting prop bet available on the pairing between Poirier and Gaethje – Betway are offering a special Gone In 60 Seconds market – which would see either suffer a loss inside the opening minute, with odds currently available at +1,200 between the two perennial contenders.

Ahead of their 2018 pairing at the lightweight limit, Poirier eventually closed as a -123 betting favorite over Gaethje in Arizona, before eventually landing a fourth round knockout win over his fellow perennial contender.

In the night’s co-headliner, Polish light heavyweight ace and former division champion, Jan Blachowicz welcomes former middleweight champion, Alex Pereira to 205 pounds – as the Brazilian looks to recover from an April championship loss to arch-rival, Israel Adesanya in Miami, Florida.

Last forced the distance against Russian contender, Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 282 back in December of last year in a vacant light heavyweight title pairing, Blachowicz fought to a split draw.

And at the time of publication, on Betway to boot, Blachowicz and Pereira are inseparable – with the pair currently listed at -110 with the bout a pick ‘em.

In his biggest victory over the course of his brief mixed martial arts career, Sao Paulo knockout artist, Pereira landed a stunning undisputed middleweight title win against the aforenoted, Adesanya back in November of last year at Madison Square Garden – stopping the Nigerian-Kiwi with a fifth round standing TKO win.

Also of note on the main card, former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson makes his return to the Octagon – and the lightweight limit to boot, attempting to bring an end to a bruising five-fight losing skid as he takes on fellow veteran, Bobby Green.

Sidelined since a fourth round guillotine choke loss to Nate Diaz back in September of last year, the once-streaking Ferguson is currently sat as a sizeable +300 betting underdog to beat San Bernardino native, Green – with the latter closing as a -400 betting favorite over at Betway to boot.
