Undefeated and undisputed. Bray native, Katie Taylor remains the unified lightweight champion after a 10 round back-and-forth war against challenger, Amanda Serrano — defeating the Puerto Rico striker with a close, split decision win at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
In an incredibly close and even fight, Taylor faced major adversity in the fifth round midway through the fight, also suffering the first knockdown of her professional career as Serrano backed her to her own corner and laid out severe punishment with a slew of hooks and straight shots.
Taking her foot off the proverbial gas pedal in the sixth frame, Serrano — who had arguably stolen three of the opening four, uber-close rounds, ultimately gave up the final few frames on the judge’s scorecards with Taylor rallying and countering on cue when opportunity arose.
Below, catch the highlights from Katie Taylor’s stunning split decision title retention win against Amanda Serrano

Former UFC double champ, Conor McGregor has taken to social media in order to encourage fellow Irish fighter, Katie Taylor, to produce yet more history, ahead of her undisputed title showdown against the Puerto Rican, Amanda Serrano.
Regardless of the result, the pair will be making women’s boxing history later today, as Taylor and Serrano will compete in front of a sold-out crowd at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
Although Taylor is far from home, she won’t be short of traveling fans who are set to witness what may be her toughest test yet.
Conor McGregor, who has built an extensive part of his combat legacy within Madison Square Garden, urged Katie Taylor on his social media to understand the opportunity she has, to cement her legacy as ‘one of the best’.
“Let’s go tonight, Katie Taylor! Making history once again, this time in the famed Madison Square Garden! With you all the way champ.”
The Irish combating pair are well acquainted and have shared a vastly similar meteoric rise in their respected sports, as both athletes have risen to become the most distinctive faces among their disciplines.
Jake Paul believes Katies Taylor’s legacy is more impressive than Conor McGregor’s
YouTube boxing star Jake Paul has put down the gloves for the meantime, as he is there to promote the rival camp of Taylor. Paul, who has his own history with McGregor, stated that he believes Katie Taylor’s achievements have far surpassed those of the 33-year-old.
“I respect Katie Taylor,” said Paul. “I think she’s awesome, she’s been nothing but kind to me and she’s a champion she’s done so much for the sport and women’s boxing so for that, she’s a legend.
“She’s the biggest thing in Ireland, and why wouldn’t she be? Conor McGregor hasn’t won a fight in five years so do people really care about him? He’s washed up. Obviously, Katie Taylor is going to be the girl that they support.” (Transcribed by The Mirror)
In spite of the outside noise, Katie Taylor will have to keep a level head going in against the Puerto Rican nine-time champion if she wants to become an undisputed champ.

Ahead of this weekend’s massive lightweight professional boxing showdown between world champion, Katie Taylor, and challenger, Amanda Serrano – event promoters, undefeated boxer, Jake Paul, and Matchroom promoter, Eddie Hearn have agreed to a whopping $1,000,000 bet on the outcome of the high-profile New York showdown.
Set to headline at Madison Square Garden, Katie Taylor, boasting an undefeated, 20-0 professional record, attempts to successfully defend the WBA, WBC, IFB, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles as she clashes with WBC and WBO featherweight best, the 42-1-1 challenger, Serrano.
The event, which has been promoted by the aforenoted Matchroom leader, Hearn – who represents, Katie Taylor, and Paul – who heads up MVP representing Serrano, also comes with quite the sizable bet between the two promoters – who have agreed to a $1,000,000 wager on the monumental championship clash.
During this week’s press conference in The Big Apple, Paul wagered a potential bet of all the jewellery he was sporting on stage, before Hearn retorted, and offered a $500,000 bet – which was met, and raised by Paul to $1,000,000. Contemplating the offer for a moment, Hearn agreed to the bet – shaking hands, before Paul claimed that should he win the wager, he would be issuing the prize money to Serrano.
Defending champion, Katie Taylor enters her clash with Amanda Serrano as a betting underdog
Bray native, Taylor, 35, who scooped gold at the London 2012 Summer Olympic games, most recently competed against Firuza Sharipova in December of last year, scoring a unanimous decision win over the course of 10 rounds to retain her above mentioned lightweight crowns. Taylor also holds a victory over Serrano’s sister, Cindy Serrano – securing a 2018 decision win in Boston, Massachusetts.
Puerto Rico native, Serrano has competed professionally since 2009, and had featured as a professional mixed martial artist on three occasions, landing an undefeated 2-0-1 record. In her most recent outing, Serrano defeat Miriam Gonzalez with a unanimous decision win in December of last year in a non-title bout at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

Undisputed Lightweight Champion Katie Taylor has praised Claressa Shields for her venture into MMA but believes the unified middleweight titleholder should now focus solely on her boxing career.
Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the only boxer in history to hold all four major world titles simultaneously across two weight classes, tested the waters of mixed martial arts as part of the rising PFL promotion in 2021. Having built an unblemished 11-0 record in the squared circle, “T-Rex” looked to create similar success in the cage.
Last June, Shields got off to a winning start in her new sport, recovering from two dropped rounds to TKO Brittney Elkin in the third on debut. But while she was able to overcome her ground deficiencies in her first appearance, the 26-year-old was unable to do the same in her second outing.
At the PFL Finale in October, Shields suffered her first professional loss in combat sports. She fell on the wrong side of a split decision against Abigail Montes after failing to prevent her opponent’s takedowns and keep the fight on the feet.
Taylor Gives Her Take On Shields’ Two-Sport Venture
But one of her fellow pound-for-pound boxing stars Katie Taylor believes a return to MMA wouldn’t be wise. Speaking during an appearance on The MMA Hour, the Irish champion credited Shields for taking on the cross-over challenger. However, “KT” believes she should now streamline all her efforts towards her career in the ring.
“I definitely didn’t expect (Shields to fight in MMA). But I thought it was a fantastic challenge for her to take on because boxing and MMA are two completely different sports. It’s very, very hard for anyone in boxing to cross over because, obviously, we have no ground game.
“If anybody got me to the ground, for example, it would be a huge problem for me. I think obviously you always have a puncher’s chance maybe, but it’s a priority — it’s very, very hard to stay on your feet. So I think it was an admirable challenge for her to take on. But I would love for her just to focus on boxing now.”
Taylor’s plea for Shields to leave her MMA career in the past, for now at least, comes ahead of what looks to be a busy year in boxing for the “GWOAT.”
Shields was initially set to return to the sport to defend her middleweight belts against Slovenia’s Ema Kozin later this month. However, with the British Boxing Board of Control announcing the suspension of the sport in the UK due to COVID-19, the status of that clash, scheduled for Cardiff, Wales, is uncertain.
Beyond that, Shields looks set for a blockbuster undisputed middleweight showdown with England’s Savannah Marshall later this year. With exciting challenges ahead of her in boxing, Taylor believes her immediate future is best set in the squared circle and nowhere else.
“There’s a lot of big fights out there for her,” Taylor said. “The likes of Savannah Marshall, who’s a fantastic world champion fighter, and I think Savannah actually beat her as an amateur fighter, so that is a huge, huge, huge fight for them. It’s probably one of the biggest fights in women’s boxing.” (h/t Boxing Scene)
Do you agree with Katie Taylor? Should Claressa Shields focus on her career inside the ring?

Boxing superstar, Katie Taylor, has heaped praise on “complete gentlemen” Conor McGregor who she believes doesn’t get enough credit in his native Ireland.
‘Notorious’ is the biggest star MMA has ever seen but over the years he has become a divisive figure due to his antics outside of the Octagon. The 33-year-old has found himself in legal trouble on a few occasions and has also crossed the line with his trash talk several times.
Katie Taylor Compares Conor McGregor To Muhammad Ali
Despite that, Taylor insists McGregor should be celebrated in Ireland as she believes he is the closest thing MMA has to Muhammad Ali.
“I messaged him after the Dustin Poirier fight, just to offer some words of encouragement really,’ Taylor told the MMA Hour. “He’s always been a fantastic support to me, but I think he’s just someone who’s actually transcended the sport. He’s like, for me, the Muhammad Ali of the UFC.
“He’s just a fantastic athlete. A great businessman as well,” Taylor added. “But what he’s done in the sport and the UFC has been absolutely incredible, and I don’t think he’s celebrated as much as he should be here in Ireland. I think he is an absolute global superstar and just a phenomenal athlete, and he’s always been a complete gentleman towards me.”
“But I’m looking at him as just a phenomenal athlete, and someone who I generally think has transcended the sport, someone who’s become bigger than the sport. Nearly every time he does fight, it’s an absolute huge event. He still gets the highest number of pay-per-view figures and he’s still the highest-paid athlete in the UFC. I just look at him as just an outstanding athlete, and I can’t wait to see him come back.” (Transcribed by Daily Mail)
Do you agree with Katie Taylor? Is Conor McGregor somewhat underappreciated?
