Kayla Harrison has given her opinion on Amanda Nunes’ departure from American Top Team.

After losing her bantamweight championship, Amanda Nunes is looking to make some changes. She recently announced that she has left her longtime home gym of American Top Team in Florida to go out on her own. ATT is the home to many high-caliber athletes and at times there can be problems that arise.

Nunes initially didn’t specify a particular reason for leaving other than having her own space and stated that she would still frequent ATT on occasion. However, Nunes has since come out and admitted that Harrison’s presence and some of her past comments also factored into her decision to exit.

Now, Kayla Harrison has spoken out about Nunes’ decision recently in an interview with talkSPORT.

“Listen, Amanda’s choices are her choices, I have no idea. She didn’t ask for my advice before she did it [laughs]. Because I would have said don’t go,” Harrison said. “I saw an interview with her after her last fight where she said she didn’t feel safe in her territory or something. I feel like that’s unfortunate for her because, to me, if you want to be the best, you have to train with the best.”

Even though Nunes and Harrison trained together, Harrison is now targeting a potential bout with Nunes. They are not in the same organization but Harrison is seeking a cross-promotional bout.

Nunes will be back in action later this year at UFC 277 following a season coaching on The Ultimate Fighter across from champ Julianna Peña. Harrison recently kicked off her 2022 PFL season with a victory over Marina Mokhnatkina earlier this month at PFL 3.

Do you think we will see Amanda Nunes and Kayla Harrison fight one day?

The PFL (Professional Fighters League) have this Tuesday afternoon confirmed they will host their inaugural events in the United Kingdom this year – with events in both London and Cardiff on deck for the month of August.

The promotion, which fields notable names including two-time lightweight tournament victor, Kayla Harrison, as well as her fellow two-time Olympic gold medalist, Claressa Shields, are also set to host an event in New York this year – during the organization’s annual season format.

The PFL book their first ventures outside the United States with a pair of UK events in August

At a press conference held in the English capital this morning, the organization confirmed dates for a London birth on August 20. at The Copper Box Arena, as well as an August 13. date at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. Along with the confirmation of two UK shows, the Professional Fighters League is also set to land its SmartCage at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on August 5.

As part of the season format, light heavyweight and lightweight bouts will feature in the ‘Big Apple’ – heavyweights and featherweights will mark the promotion’s debut in Wales, while welterweights and women’s lightweights will feature as part of a London card on August 20.

Among the possible inclusion of the aforenoted Harrison on the London card, featherweight division staple, Brendan Loughnane is likely to find himself booked to feature on August 13. in Cardiff, Wales – with the Manchester fan-favorite most recently rebounding to the winner’s enclosure with a technical decision win against Ryoji Kudo at PFL 2 late last month.

As for Harrison, the two-time lightweight tournament victor recently improved her undefeated professional record to 13-0 with the two-time Olympic gold medalist in Judo, managing to land a unanimous decision win over Marina Mokhnatkina at PFL 3 at the beginning of this month.

Ali Abdelaziz Shuts Down Kayla Harrison-Cris Cyborg Fight Talks: “Nobody Gives A Sh*t”

Kayla Harrison’s manager Ali Abdelaziz does not believe a potential showdown against Cris Cyborg is the way to go.

Going undefeated in her professional career, the two-time PFL champion Kayla Harrison has been dominating the competition in the organization. The 31-year-old racked up 13 wins in the PFL and has been touted as the greatest female athlete of all time even though she has not taken her chops outside the promotion.

Current Bellator women’s featherweight titleholder Cris Cyborg is another woman who had worked hard to build an aura of invincibility around her. Cyborg ran through her opponents during her prime and can still hold hers against the very best in female competition in the company.

Ali Abdelaziz is not interested in Cyborg

There have been talks to put the two women together inside the octagon in a cross-promotion bout for their legacy. However, Bellator president Scott Coker has suggested that no official discussions have taken place in regard to the matter. With Cyborg set to become a free agent this July, PFL will have an opportunity to work towards the super fight and make her an offer.

Ali Abdelaziz, head of Dominance MMA, and manager for Kayla Harrison is not too keen on the idea and believes Cyborg is trying to mooch off of Harrison’s brand.

“At the end of the day, listen, everyone is using Kayla’s name to promote themselves,” Abdelaziz said. “I have no interest in this fight. Kayla will fight anybody. I don’t care about promoters, managers, reporters. They all talk about Kayla and Cyborg. Listen, at the end of the day, I don’t really care about this fight. This fight will probably never happen.

“And even if this fight happens, nobody gives a sh*t. That’s my opinion. Because Kayla’s Kayla. She’s undefeated. She’s the best female fighter in the world, and in my opinion a pound-for-pound great right now. She doesn’t need to prove anything to anybody. Cyborg needs her. She doesn’t need Cyborg. She’s making six figures, seven figures every fight. She’s happy. She’s going to beat whoever they give her.” (h/t MMA Junkie)

Abdelaziz Prefers Amanda Nunes Fight

Ali Abdelaziz has not outright shut down the possibility of Harrison participating in a big fight. While he acknowledged the allure of such an idea, he reiterated his conviction that the opponent needs to be a big draw as well to benefit Harrison.

According to Abdelaziz, Cyborg is not a needle-mover and he would much rather prefer someone like Amanda Nunes. He made sure to let everyone know that it’s not the danger in facing an opponent like Cyborg but the business value of it that influences his decision for Harrison.

“If you talk about maybe one day Amanda Nunes or something like that, yeah, Amanda Nunes is interesting. Let’s do it,” Abdelaziz said. “But I don’t really care about Cyborg. I don’t think people will buy this fight.

“Anybody can come. They’re going to get their ass whooped regardless. It can be Amanda, Cyborg. Anybody. Julianna (Peña). Anybody can get it. They can all get it. Just don’t use Kayla’s name to promote your brand.”

Amanda Nunes will be waiting for Kayla Harrison.

Nunes recently hinted at some hostility with PFL star and former American Top Team (ATT) teammate Kayla Harrison as the reason for her recent departure from the gym. “The Lioness” discussed the matter during an appearance on MMA Fighting’s Trocacao Franca podcast.

The former duel-weight world champion said she felt slighted when Harrison started talking trash about her while they were teammates. She felt “cornered” as well since they trained with the same coaches.

Now, Nunes is ready and willing to settle any of those issues with Harrison inside the Octagon now that she’s departed from ATT.

“If she’s going to sign [with the UFC] or not, that’s up to Kayla. I’ll be waiting,” Nunes said. “That would be the correct way, in my opinion, for her to talk about me, because I’m no longer there [at ATT].

“That’s the correct way to say whatever she wants on the mic, to call me out or do whatever she wants, and I’ll be waiting for her there. When she signs [with the UFC], I’ll be there to defend [my belt].”

Nunes has defeated some of the best fighters in women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) history. She owns victories over names such as Holly Holm, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Valentina Shevchenko, and more.

Adding a name like Harrison to the list would certainly be another major notch in her belt. Of course, Harrison, currently with the PFL, would have to journey to the UFC first.

“Every challenge is welcome,” Nunes said. “If you fight and like to be at the top and test yourself at all times, you really want motivation to continue breaking records.

“After my departure [from ATT], it’s entirely on Kayla to signing with the UFC. I’ll be there waiting for anything. Of course, it will be way better now that we’re on different sides.”

Former UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes has provided more context for why she decided to leave her longtime gym American Top Team (ATT).

Nunes left ATT following her loss to Julianna Peña at UFC 269 last December. She hinted at a desire to have her own private space for training as being a significant reason for her choosing to part ways with the gym.

But Nunes has recently opened up more about her leave, specifically pointing to multiple-time PFL champion Kayla Harrison.

During a recent interview with MMA Fighting’s Trocacao Franca podcast, Nunes explained how additions to ATT such as Harrison and UFC fighter Yana Kunitskaya changed her perception of the gym.

“There’s that saying, like it or lump it. I was bothered by the whole situation, of course,” Nunes said. “There were no girls when I got to American Top Team. I was the first woman to bring two belts and put the women’s team in history. When Kayla got there and then Kunitskaya, it began creating a weird situation for me because that was my territory.

“And then Kayla started talking. I was kind of, ‘Man, I’m not safe even in my territory.’ I was kind of cornered, even because we share the same coaches. She trains with Mike Brown and I train with Mike Brown. I was already training with them when she got there.

“If there’s someone that carries the name of the team, that’s me, who brought two belts (to ATT). If I wasn’t who I really am, a champion in two divisions, cool, no problem. But I was the champion already. She would have to train somewhere else to fight me.” (h/t BJ Penn)

Harrison re-signed with the PFL despite talks with the UFC and Bellator during her free agency. She most recently alluded that wins over Nunes and Bellator champion Cris Cyborg would cement her status as the greatest female fighter.

Nunes is coaching the current season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite Pena and the two bantamweights will face off in a rematch later this year. With Harrison re-joining the PFL for at least this season, talks of a fight with Nunes seem to be on hold for now, but Nunes has still felt the impact of Harrison’s rise at ATT.

What are your thoughts on Amanda Nunes’ comments about her ATT exit?

Julianna Peña: Kayla Harrison Was Absolutely Never Going To Leave PFL

Julianna Peña was ready to welcome Kayla Harrison to the UFC but wasn’t confident about the chances of her signing in free agency.

Harrison re-signed with the PFL after the league matched an offer from Bellator in free agency earlier this year. She had been in discussions with the UFC, Bellator, and PFL as she pondered her next move.

Harrison was in attendance to watch Peña upset Amanda Nunes at UFC 269 last December. A fight between Nunes and Harrison was considered to be a possibility with a win over Peña.

During a recent interview with Morning Kombat, Peña explained why she wasn’t shocked by Harrison’s free-agency decision.

“No, if you go back to my interviews months ago, I knew she was gonna stay with the PFL and I said she wasn’t coming over here. And I knew she absolutely wouldn’t be making that jump,” Peña said.

“The PFL has surrounded their entire organization and hinged their entire operation off one girl, and that’s Kayla. They cannot lose their one dog that they got in the fight, it’s not gonna happen. So they’re going to hang onto her for everything they’ve got. And guess what? I’m not hating on you boo-boo, get your paper. You just won $2 million in the last two years fighting these tomato cans. Do you. Get your money.”

Peña went on to criticize Harrison’s lack of high-caliber competition in the PFL while also touting her own fighting résumé.

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to [say she’s fighting] tomato cans, I just mean to say that I think nine of her wins were off of TUF alternates,” Pena continued. “I’m fighting the elite, I’m fighting the best of the best, I’m fighting world champion after world champion: Nicco Montaño, Valentina Shevchenko, Germaine de Randamie, Amanda Nunes. I’m fighting the hitters out there.

Julianna Peña

“So she was welcome to come, she didn’t come. So when her contract’s up she’ll be welcome to come again. And if she wants to come jump ship, then we’ll be ready and we’ll be welcoming her with open arms.”

Harrison made her 2022 PFL debut last Friday in a victorious effort against Marina Mokhnatkina in the main event of PFL 3. Peña will face Nunes in a title rematch later this year following their time as coaches in the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter.

While hopes of a Harrison vs. Nunes matchup are diminished, for now, the probability of an eventual clash between Peña and Harrison remains in the cards.
