Middleweight contenders Jack Hermansson and Kelvin Gastelum are set to fight on July 18. According to reports the two title hopefuls will throw down on ‘Fight Island’ with the winner moving one step closer to a shot at current 185lb king Israel Adesanya.

Brett Okamoto of ESPN broke the news last night that two of the best middleweights on the planet will square off next month, he wrote. “Per sources, Jack Hermansson (@jackthejokermma) and Kelvin Gastelum (@KelvinGastelum) have agreed to meet on July 18 on Fight Island.”

Hermansson will enter the fight off the back of a TKO loss to fellow contender Jared Cannonier. Prior to that, the Swedish fighter had been in the form of his life picking up four straight wins inside the octagon, including a high-profile, upset victory over ‘Jacare’ Souza. He also holds other big wins over the likes of Scott Askham, Thales Leites, and David Branch.

Gastelum is also looking to get back in the win column after two straight defeats. The Ultimate Fighter winner previously went five rounds with Adesanya for the interim middleweight title in one of the best fights of all-time – he lost a unanimous decision in that fight. Gastelum then met Darren Till in his middleweight debut at UFC 244. In the fight, he struggled to pin down the Englishman who easily outpointed him over three rounds to get the judge’s decision. Since suffering his second straight loss Gastelum has tested positive for marijuana and was subsequently banned from the sport for four months. Now his time has been served it appears Gastelum is ready to go and fans don’t have to wait too long to see him back in action.

As of right now, no further details about the July 18 ‘Fight Island’ card have been released. It remains to be seen if this fight will headline or will help build up a bigger event. Be sure to stay tuned to LowKickMMA for the breaking news and up-to-date information on this event as we get it.

Jacare Souza usually does well when it comes to rematches.

The middleweight contender hasn’t lost a rematch in his career with some of his notable wins coming against the likes of Chris Camozzi and Gegard Mousasi. He plans on adding Yoel Romero and Kelvin Gastelum to that list.

Souza lost debatable decisions to both fighters in 2015 and 2018 respectively. And he is looking to exact revenge on them after his fight with Uriah Hall this weekend at UFC 249.

“I’d like to make a rematch against Romero,” Souza told MMA Junkie. “I believe it’s gonna be a great fight – or Kelvin Gastelum. I have to prove that I’m the king of the rematch because I never lost a rematch, and I’d like to make a rematch against these fighters.

“… But right now I have to be focused on my opponent because he’s tough. I have to be smart because he’s tough.”

Hall is certainly a threat. The 35-year-old is on his first two-fight winning streak since 2015 and coming off an upset win over Antonio Carlos Junior.

Souza, meanwhile, is on a two-fight losing streak — the first of his professional career — and will be looking to return to the win column and enter middleweight title contention again.

And he is certainly confident of earning the victory despite his respect for Hall.

“I have a lot of respect for Hall,” Souza said. “He’s a great fighter, he’s incredible, he’s a knockout master. But I’m ready to use my skills and beat him. I did a very good training camp for this fight and, on fight day, I want to prove that I’m better than him.

“I believe I’m going to win this fight in the second round. I don’t know why, but I believe I’m going to win in the second.”

UFC 249 takes place Saturday in Jacksonville, Florida.

Middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum is hoping he’ll be able to fight Jack Hermansson next and re-establish himself at the top of the division.

Gastelum is currently on a two-fight losing streak after falling to consecutive defeats against Israel Adesanya and Darren Till. Speaking to MMA Fighting the 28-year-old revealed he has been suffering from a torn LCL and is currently healing up, he said.

“I’ve been recovering from a torn LCL back in January. I had a full tear. No surgery needed, thankfully. Just been doing therapy on it and reconstructive therapy on it. It’s about 85 or 90 percent there,” Gastelum said.

“I’m just starting to grapple a bit, starting to box again. I’m starting to kick again. Training is picking back up a little bit. Just at the right time. Hopefully, by July, (and) I don’t know where this whole pandemic thing will be by then, but I’m hoping to fight by July.”

Once he is fit and ready to fight Gastelum has one opponent in mind who he thinks will help propel him back into title contention, he explained.

“I like to be able to fight anybody in the top-five,” Gastelum said. “In my opinion, a fight with Jack Hermansson would make sense. We’re both coming off losses. He’s in the top-five. A win for either of us would take us where we need to go.

“We both need to work our way back up the division, back up to Adesanya. I feel that’s the one that makes sense, but you never know what the matchmakers are thinking.”

The Swedish middleweight contender is coming off a loss to Jared Cannonier. He is currently being linked to a fight with former champion Chris Weidman although nothing has been confirmed yet.

Kelvin Gastelum is looking to return to action in the summer.

Gastelum hasn’t competed since November last year where he was outpointed by Darren Till in what was an underwhelming performance. The former title challenger has already gone on record stating that he returned to action too quickly following a back-and-forth war in his interim middleweight title fight with Israel Adesanya nearly seven months earlier.

And having suffered a knee injury in January — which luckily required no surgery — the time off has been a blessing in disguise for Gastelum who is now targeting a July comeback.

“I’ve been recovering from a torn LCL back in January – I had a full tear,” Gastelum told MMA Fighting. “No surgery needed, thankfully. Just been doing therapy on it and reconstructive therapy on it. It’s about 85 or 90 percent there.

“I’m just starting to grapple a bit, starting to box again. I’m starting to kick again. Training is picking back up a little bit. Just at the right time. Hopefully by July — I don’t know where this whole pandemic thing will be by then — but I’m hoping to fight by July.”

Gastelum notably claimed the defeat to Adesanya still burns in his soul. For now, though, he’s just looking to get back in the win column. He is targeting anyone in the top-five with his preference being Jack Hermansson.

Eventually, he hopes to run things back with Adesanya.

“I like to be able to fight anybody in the top-five,” Gastelum added.
