Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has revealed he almost lost the sight in both his eyes after fighting Kelvin Gastelum.
The now-retired fighter accepted a late notice fight against Gastelum off the back of his 185lb title fight defeat against Georges St Pierre in 2017. Things didn’t go well for Bisping who was cracked early and suffered his second defeat in just a few weeks which brought an end to his illustrious career.
The Brit had a well-documented issue with one of his eyes for the majority of his career. So, when the vision in his good eye started to deteriorate after his loss to Gastelum things got scary, Bisping told Submission Radio.
“I fight Georges St. Pierre, I lose that fight, and he knew I was blind in one eye, he targeted it. Then, I fly to Shanghai, couple of weeks later I fight Kelvin Gastelum, I get cracked. I think I’ve had a good run and that was that. And then we go to an afterparty afterwards and I’m sitting there in this club, and every time I look this way, I get a flash of light. I was like, what was that? So I look again, another flash of light. And every time I look to the left, I get a flash of light. And I started panicking. And I was like, holy shit, I don’t believe this, I’ve got a detached retina in my good eye. And I started (getting) emotional, in a night club. I’ve had a couple of drinks, but I’m like, fuck, I’m thinking I’m gonna go blind. Cause if they could have fixed the eye, it’s gonna be a few weeks while the surgery repairs, so I’m gonna be blind at least for a little bit, and that’s a terrifying thought to have, to actually think you’ll go blind.
“So, I left this night club cause I don’t want to be sitting there and bloody tears running down my face and people thinking, oh, look at this soft cunt, he’s crying because he lost a fight. I’m like, no, I think I’m gonna go blind. So, I leave the club and I go back to my hotel, and a few of my mates came back a little while after to see if I was okay. Anyway, we have a good drink – you know, a very, very good drink. So, by the time I’ve sobered up, I’ve forgotten all about my eye at this point. I got to the airport. I fall asleep on the plane. It’s a long flight back to LA. And I wake up half way through and I look to my left, and there’s that flashing light. So, when I land, I got to my eye doctor straight away. He’s like, yeah, you need to go see someone.
“I go in there. And whenever I’m uncomfortable, I always use humour as kind of like a mask. So, I go in to see the doc and I say, listen, doc, I think I’ve got a detached retina in my good eye. And he said, alright, well, let’s take a look, I’m gonna put some drops in you’re not gonna be able to see for a while. And I make a joke, I say, oh well, I guess I better get used to this view, ey? And he says, calm down, we’re not there just yet. And I was like, we’re not fucking there just yet? Jesus Christ. I was freaking out. And anyway, turns out I had a vitreous detachment. So anyway, I was like, well, that’s it, the game is up, I don’t want to go blind.”
How did Michael Bisping manage to compete so long with just one eye?

Kelvin Gastelum remains haunted by his defeat to Israel Adesanya last year.
Exactly one year and a day ago, Gastelum collided with Adesanya for the interim middleweight title at UFC 236 with the winner getting the opportunity to face then champion Robert Whittaker.
Although the 28-year-old had a promising start in what was an epic back-and-forth war, it was Adesanya who eventually came out on top as he scored multiple knockdowns in the fifth round to come away with the unanimous decision verdict.
And for Gastelum, the fact that he came close to UFC gold still “burns” in his soul.
“I’m very proud of the effort that I put in that fight and what we did in that fight despite the circumstances, and I’m very proud of that fight because I got to do a lot of things that I haven’t been able to do in a lot of other fights,” Gastelum told MMA Junkie. “I’m very proud of it. At the same time though, this is not why I got into the sport, to say and look back, ‘I almost did it. I was this close.’ No, man. I’m not going to be one of those people.
“I’m not really worried about it right now, but when people ask me, and they’re like, ‘You were this close,’ it sucks. It burns in my soul. It burns in my heart to know I was that close, and I just won’t let it happen again.”
Adesanya has since gone on to become the undisputed middleweight champion while Gastelum would suffer his second loss in a row after getting outpointed by Darren Till at UFC 244 in November.
Gastelum admitted he would have been better off taking more time on the sidelines than returning seven months after the beating he took against Adesanya.
Regardless, that’s in the past and the former title challenger is now looking to return to the win column. He has no idea who his next opponent could be, but he does have a three-man shortlist headed by Jared Cannonier.
“He’s at that level,” Gastelum said of Cannonier. “He’s a dangerous guy, and everybody recognizes how dangerous he is. That would be another big name. If you beat him, you’re right there, too, you know? That would be another guy.
“I don’t know. There’s a couple options. I just don’t know who the matchmakers would want me to match up with for the next fight, but I mean, I’m hoping for anybody: Robert Whittaker, Jared Cannonier, Jack Hermansson.”
One thing is for sure — Gastelum still hopes to achieve plenty in his career.
“I’m glad I’m taking this time to heal my body, heal my mind, heal everything, you know, and just get ready to make another run once again,” Gastelum added. “I’m still young. Man, I’m 28 years old. I’m not even 30. I haven’t even hit my prime yet.
“I still believe in myself. I still believe I’m going to be champion.”
Do you think Gastelum can still become middleweight champion?

Jared Cannonier has had a tough time locking down an opponent for UFC 248.
Initially, Cannonier was scheduled to face Robert Whittaker at the pay-per-view (PPV) event. However, Whittaker pulled out of the card for personal reasons that have yet to be confirmed. Then, it was said that Cannonier would face former UFC welterweight title challenger Darren Till. Unfortunately, Till hasn’t agreed to the fight as there are conflicting reports that he’s dealing with an injury or simply can’t come to a financial agreement with the UFC.
In the meantime, Cannonier is trying to secure an opponent for the PPV. He recently took to Instagram and suggested to UFC president Dana White that they match him up with former interim 185-pound title challenger Kelvin Gastelum.
“5 weeks out from UFC 248 and still no fight. @robwhittakermma can’t make it. @darrentill2 is still thinking about it. I’ve got people asking me left and right if they can go ahead and buy tickets and plan trips to Vegas @mickmaynard2@danawhite@ufc if Darren won’t fight and @yoelromeromma can get a title shot on a 2 fight L streak, then give @kgastelum a contenders match on one too. This is me waiting to hear back.”
Cannonier has been extremely impressive since jumping up to middleweight. He is currently on a three-fight win streak since cutting down to middleweight from the light heavyweight division. With wins over the likes of David Branch, Anderson Silva, and Jack Hermansson, Cannonier is just a win or two away from a title shot.
What do you think about Cannonier calling out Gastelum for UFC 248?
