Kelvin Gastelum is still on his quest for gold at 185 pounds. Gastelum had his opportunity earlier this year when he took on Israel Adesanya at UFC 236 in April for the interim middleweight title. Adesanya took home the unanimous decision victory after a tremendous five-round war.

However, according to Gastelum in a recent interview with TMZ, the former Ultimate Fighter winner wasn’t 100 percent for the fight. (H/T MMA News)

“I wasn’t,” Gastelum said. “People don’t really know that, and I don’t come out in the media and say that, but, yeah, I was sick for about two weeks. I got the staph. It came back from when I had it in Australia…had the staph, had congestion in my lungs, so I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t really breathe.

“I was throwing up, so I couldn’t really train for about two weeks. People don’t really know: I stopped taking antibiotics six, seven days before the fight. People don’t really know it, but I was probably 60%, 70% for the fight.”

Gastelum hasn’t fought since his loss to Adesanya earlier this year. Now, he’s slated to take on Darren Till at UFC 244 in New York City’s Madison Square Garden on November 2. As for Adesanya, he just dismantled Robert Whittaker to become the undisputed 185-pound champion of the world, and will make his first-ever career defense against Paulo Costa next.

What do you think about Gastelum claiming he wasn’t fully healthy for his fight with Adesanya?

Henry Cejudo continues to call out fighters in the combat sports world and this time, he did it alongside Kelvin Gastelum.

In a recently uploaded social media post, Cejudo called out the duo of Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. Gastelum was with him as they declared themselves the “New Money Team”:

“So here we are, team ‘Triple C’ and team ‘KG’, we’re out here taking over,” Cejudo said (via BJ Penn). “Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather, all you wannabe kingpins, you guys can all do me a favor, and bend the knee to Triple C and KG too.”

“You’re talking to the ‘NMT: the New Money Team,’” Gastelum added.

You can see the video below:

Cejudo has called out a whole host of names since becoming a two-weight champion earlier this summer. The list includes the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko, Valentina Shevchenko, Amanda Nunes, Weili Zhang, Germaine de Randamie and more.

Don’t expect him to stop at this rate.

When it comes to fighting, “Triple C” is expected to come back early next year after undergoing shoulder surgery. His next title defense is likely to be at flyweight against Joseph Benavidez.

As for Gastelum, he is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Israel Adesanya earlier this year. He is scheduled to welcome Darren Till to middleweight when they meet at UFC 244.

UFC middleweight contender Jack Hermansson believes Darren Till has put himself in a tough position by fighting Kelvin Gastelum next.

Till will make his middleweight debut when he faces Gastelum on the main card of UFC 244 which takes place November 2 in Madison Square Garden, New York. Before that bout was booked, Hermansson was looking to fight Gastelum.

Instead, he will headline UFC Copenhagen this weekend against Jared Cannonier. Still, he feels Till is in a tough spot, especially having lost his last two fights in a row:

“It’s alright, there was an opportunity for him there and I understand that he’s a big name as well, but on the other hand I think that Darren is putting himself in a tough position,” Hermansson told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast. “He has been having a hard time and now he’s moving up a weight class and fighting one of the biggest names. Should he lose this fight there’s a big chance that he won’t be a relative as he was before.

“I’m alright with [the fight]. I know how this game works — bigger names will get bigger opportunities. I guess that’s what we’re seeing here.”

Regardless, everyone will soon figure out whether Till can be a force to be reckoned with at 185 pounds. Because for Hermansson, Gastelum is a tough matchup for the Liverpool native:

“[There had to be] at least one other guy out of the top ten [Till could have faced], right? I feel like [Gastelum is a tough matchup for Till],” Hermansson added. “Also, style-wise, I feel like Till stands with his hands open wide and Gastelum has one of the best one-twos in the game, so it’s going to be interesting. I guess we’re going to see pretty quickly if Darren has something to add to this weight class.”

Do you agree with Hermansson?
