Chris Weidman was in an absolute must-win scenario when he met surging young prospect Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., July 22, 2017) UFC on FOX 25 from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

After all, the former UFC champ had lost his last three fights by finish despite arguably winning the early part of all three, and a fourth, especially in his home base of Long Island as countless New York faithful looked on.

Thankfully for the career path of “The All-American,” Weidman secured a much-needed win when he sent Gastelum down the pecking order with a perfect third-round arm triangle after using his go-to wrestling to dominate Gastelum on the ground. It wasn’t without a tense moment, however, as Gastelum appeared calm and confident as he came back from being taken down to rock Weidman with a huge left in the first round.

It was a shot that the former champion said actually resulted in a flash knockout that allowed him to catch himself before he hit the ground. From there, Weidman actually rocked Gastelum when the 25-year-old rising star came out aggressive in the third round, and parlayed it into a beautiful takedown that resulted in the fight-ending submission. After the fight, Weidman called out middleweight champion Michael Bisping for a championship fight.

He may have some work to do before that becomes a reality. For now, watch the full fight video highlights of Weidman’s crucial win from Long Island, New York here:

UFC on Fox 25 went down from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York tonight (Saturday, July 22, 2017). The show was headlined by a middleweight clash between contenders Kelvin Gastelum and former champion Chris Weidman.

Weidman was able to halt his three-fight losing streak in rousing, come-from-behind fashion with an arm-triangle choke finish in the third. After controlling most of the first round with kicks and takedowns, Gastelum dropped the former middleweight king with a flush left hand at the very end of the round. Weidman surged back in the second frame, though, utilizing takedowns, a kimura attempt, and near back-takes to even the scorecards. He picked up where he left off in the third, cinching up the fight-ending choke as Gastelum fought to keep Weidman off his back.

The co-main event pit two hard-nosed featherweight wrestlers against each other. The back and forth fight saw plenty of takedowns, scrambles, and wild striking exchanges. Bermudez was thought to hold most of the advantages going in, but it was Elkins who was able to score several key takedowns in the opening frame. The second round was extremely close and turned out to be the decisive round, as Bermudez came out very aggressive and soundly took the third. In the end, “The Damage” was awarded a split decision victory. It was Elkins’ fifth straight win and his second straight as a big underdog.

Chris Weidman had to stop the skid. Would home cooking help him do the trick?

Two years ago, Weidman was the UFC middleweight champ, with a 13-0 record, two wins over GOAT candidate Anderson Silva and a high perch on pound-for-pound lists everywhere to his name.

It was a quick and precipitous fall.

Various injuries hampered him. Then there was that knockout loss to Luke Rockhold that saw him relinquish his belt. Then he lost his next two—both by knockout.

So as Weidman came into UFC on Fox 25 Saturday—taking place on his native Long Island, New York—he had to stop the torrent of bad news. He still had the great pressure and wrestling and ground-and-pound. But when he faced Kelvin Gastelum, would it matter? Or would Gastelum be able to use his hands and his own pressure game to hand Weidman another thump on a suddenly suspect chin?

This was only one of 13 fights on the card. As always, the final stat lines don’t reveal it all. These are the real winners and losers from UFC on Fox 25 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
