A middleweight tilt between former Strikeforce title challenger Tim Kennedy (18-6) and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum (13-2) served as the second bout on the main card of UFC 206 inside the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

Once Gastelum got into a groove, Kennedy didn’t stand a chance.

Kennedy went high with a kick early. Gastelum caught the leg and threw leather. Kennedy landed a right hand and drove his opponent against the fence. He took Gastelum down briefly. He remained in control and looked to take the back. Gastelum got back up, but wasn’t free from the clinch and took some knees to his legs. The TUF winner broke free and landed a left hand. Gastelum landed a knee to the body on the break. Kennedy’s right eye began to swell. Gastelum teed off on Kennedy before the round ended.

A kick to the body from Gastelum landed to open the second round. Kennedy’s takedown defense was stuffed and this time it was Gastelum who moved towards the back. Kennedy avoided the bad position and got control of the clinch. Gastelum broke free and fired a combination. A lunging uppercut connected found the chin of Kennedy. Gastelum reversed a position and gained control on the ground before they returned standing. A left hook left Kennedy a little wobbly. A one-two combination for Gastelum ended the round.

The final frame opened with Gastelum running towards his opponent. He fired a barrage of punches and went high with a kick. A hard jab stunned Kennedy. The TUF winner landed a jab. A spinning wheel kick from Kennedy missed. Gastelum landed another lead uppercut and dropped his opponent with a massive punch to end the fight.

Final Result: Kelvin Gastelum def. Tim Kennedy via TKO (Strikes) – R3, 2:45

Tim Kennedy once again has a fight set up.

According to a report by MMA Fighting, Kelvin Gastelum has been cleared to face Kennedy next month at UFC 206. The hold up was that the Ontario Athletic Commission planned to fulfill the suspension handed down by the New York Athletic Commission to Gastelum for missing his weigh-in earlier this month.

Gastelum, though, settled on a $2,000 fine with the New York Athletic Commission and will be allowed to compete on December 10 vs. Kennedy.

Kennedy has gone through two cancelled fights with Rashad Evans in recent weeks, but was always hopeful of remaining on the Canada card.

There still appears to be a hold up involving the UFC 206 card, as the Ontatio Athletic Commission has yet to receive confirmation that will allow the Tim Kennedy-Kelvin Gastelum contest to take place.

Gastelum was suspended six months by the New York Athletic Commission after failing to weigh-in. The former Ultimate Fighter winner remains hopeful that his management team will get the suspension lifted so he can compete.

“The OAC honors all suspensions by members of the Association of Boxing Commissions,” Denelle Balfour, a spokesperson for the commission, wrote today in an email to MMAjunkie.

Gastelum has struggled with his weight, forcing the UFC to move him to middleweight once again. He is planning to try his hand at welterweight next year.

If the Ontario Athletic Commission approves, Tim Kennedy will meet Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 206 next month.

Officials announced the bout Saturday night during UFC Fight Night 101. The middleweight contest would be part of the main card on December 10 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, if Gastelum is approved.

Gastelum was given a suspension by the New York Athletic Commission earlier this month after failing to weigh-in for a planned fight with Donald Cerrone. The bout was scratched and the former Ultimate Fighter winner was told he would need to move up to 185 pounds from welterweight.

Kennedy was scheduled to meet Rashad Evans at both UFC 205 and UFC 206, but the former light heavyweight champion has been deemed medically unfit to compete by both commissions.

Looks like Kelvin Gastelum will have six months to adjust to middleweight after the UFC 205 weigh-ins fiasco.

ESPN broke the news Monday that the New York State Athletic Commission has stepped in and handed down a six-month suspension to Kelvin Gastelum for failing to show up to the official weigh-ins at UFC 205.

Gastelum was set to meet Donald Cerrone earlier this month on the biggest stage in the sports history, Madison Square Garden. It was easily the biggest fight of his career, but he showed up ten pounds over the 170 pound limit. He didn’t even step on the scale causing the UFC to scrap the fight, which was scheduled for the main card.

It wasn’t the first time this has happened; it wasn’t even the second time its happened. It was the third time in the 25-year-old’s short career he has failed to make the welterweight mark.

UFC President Dana White wasn’t impressed and vowed he would never let The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 winner compete at welterweight again. Following the suspension Gastelum now won’t be eligible to compete at his new home of middleweight until approximately May.

It should be noted, that Gastelum’s manager Ali Abdelaziz told ESPN they intend to appeal the suspension. Abdelaziz also added, that Gastelum is looking to fill in for Rashad Evans at UFC 206 against Tim Kennedy.

Cerrone was paid his show money for UFC 205 and was instantly booked against Matt Brown at UFC 206 in Toronto.
