Kevin Lee Tony Ferguson UFC rematch

Having penned terms to make an Octagon return last month, former interim UFC lightweight title challenger, Kevin Lee, appears to have sights set on a rematch with former interim champion, Tony Ferguson – in an attempt to avenge a 2017 submission loss.

Last month, reports emerged detailing how Lee, a former UFC lightweight and welterweight contender, had inked a multi-fight deal with the organization again, ahead of a return to the Dana White-led banner later this year,

Departing the promotion back in 2021, Kevin Lee featured at UFC Vegas 35 in August of that year, suffering a unanimous decision loss to Daniel Rodriguez.

Slapped with an official suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after failed to disclose his use of prescribed of Adderall to treat ADHD, the former interim title challenger soon linked up with the Khabib Nurmagomedov-led, Eagle FC.

Matching with UFC alum, Diego Sanchez in a super lightweight clash, Lee managed to return to the winner’s enclosure in a unanimous decision win last March.

Former UFC interim lightweight title challenger Kevin Lee is looking to find somewhere that he can truly call home, for the foreseeable future.

“Motown Phenom” has been a bit of a gun for hire as of late and after his UFC return didn’t pan out the way he hoped it would, Lee is exploring some new options.

On November 15, he’s set to debut on Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA when he faces off against Saul Almeida.

Lee doesn’t see this as a quick stop-gap before signing for another MMA promotion and in fact, believes that he can raise the profile of the sport.

Kevin Lee Believes That He Can Elevate Bare Knuckle MMA Like Mike Perry Has With BKFC

Lee is confident that with his fighting style, he will be very effective when competing in bare-knuckle MMA.

His heavy wrestling style should allow him to negate a lot of the damage that would usually come with competing without the gloves on.

He said in a recent interview with MMA Fighting that he not only believes that this switch will suit him, Lee thinks he can elevate the sport as a result of his success.

The 32-year-old made reference to the impact that Mike Perry has had in bare-knuckle boxing since departing the UFC, going on to become the face of BKFC.

“I’m curious to see how I’m gonna pan out. You see guys like Mike Perry really take bare knuckle boxing and take it to a different level because it fit his style really well. I think that bare knuckle MMA, for me, could be that thing that does that or I could be that guy for bare knuckle MMA. You know, I got great kicks, I got great wrestling and I got great top pressure and all of that kind of blends to bare knuckle the best.”

Lightweight staple Kevin Lee explained his thought process behind re-joining the UFC. The US-born athlete says that he is after a challenge in MMA.

‘The Motown Phenom’ Lee signed with the UFC originally in 2014. After earning a record of 11-7 in the competitive lightweight division he was cut after back-to-back losses to Daniel Rodriguez and Charles Oliveira. After earning a victory over Diego Sanchez at Eagle FC, Lee has found his way back to the UFC.

In an interview with Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Kevin Lee explained that this is for his legacy. The 30-year-old athlete was speaking with the PFL and instead went with the UFC. He explained:

“I was probably like two or three days away from when they [PFL] made that call. Two days later and I would have signed it and we would be talking about having some kind of no-name type of fight and then working my way toward a Jake Paul [fight]. If that was the route I wanted to go down, I could have done it. Jake Paul’s a much easier fight than having to fight — I mean, you’re talking about Colby Covington, Leon Edwards, and [Jorge] Masvidal. The list can just keep going with tough fights. You’ve got Khamzat [Chimaev] out there somewhere. There’s a lot of tougher fights.”

Kevin Lee wants to put it all on the line

It seems as though the plan is to compete in the welterweight division in the UFC. The 30-year-old fighter explained that he wants to put it all on the line, and that’s why he looked at the UFC and not another MMA organization. He added:

“Dana White’s son can be my fan, but I want my son to be my biggest fan. I think he can look up to, ‘Okay, you actually went out there and you did it. You actually competed and you actually put your balls on the line instead of taking the easy route out.’ Jake Paul would have been the easy route, for sure.” [Transcript courtesy of MMA Mania]

Kevin Lee will be back in the UFC sometime later in 2023.
