Retired UFC lightweight champion and current coach Khabib Nurmagomedov has a busy night ahead of him at UFC 311. Nurmagomedov, who’ll be coaching back-to-back…
On Wednesday, Dana White announced that the promotion’s first pay-per-view of the new year will be headlined by a lightweight title clash between reigning and defending champion Islam Makhachev and the division’s top-ranked contender Arman Tsarukyan.
Those two title fights join the already-announced light heavyweight banger between former titleholders Jamahal Hill and Jiri Prochazka.
Considering that both Makhachev and Umar Nurmagomedov are famously a part of Khabib’s team in Dagestan, the UFC Hall of Famer is already stressing about having to corner his fighters in back-to-back championship bouts next month.
“I think it’s never happened before, or hasn’t happened until now,” Nurmagomedov wrote in a translated post on his Instagram story. “What a night is waiting for me, I hope I’ll survive.”
Can Khabib Nurmagomedov go 2-0 in title fights at UFC 311?
For Islam Makhachev, it will be his third time putting his 155-pound crown on the line after securing two straight wins over Alexander Volkanovski before submitting Dustin Poirier in the fifth round of their UFC 302 main event in June.
Makhachev’s fight with Tsarukyan will be the second-ever meeting between the two. The first came back in 2019 when Makahchev defeated ‘Ahalkalakets’ via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 7. Since then, Tsarukyan has gone 9-1 inside the Octagon, his only other loss coming against Mateusz Gamrot. Tsarukyan earned his spot at the top of the lightweight ladder via a quartet of wins, including Ws against Beneil Dariush and ex-champion Charles Oliveira.
Meanwhile, Umar Nurmagomedov — the cousin of Khabib — will compete in his first title fight at UFC 311. Despite being a perfect 18-0 in his mixed martial arts career with six of those victories coming inside the Octagon, Nurmagomedov is sorely lacking any noteworthy wins outside of a dominant performance against Cory Sandhagen in August that skyrocketed him toward the top of the rankings.
Before that, his UFC wins came against Sergey Morozov, Brian Kelleher, Nate Maness, Raoni Barcelos, and Bekzat Almakhan. Still, Nurmagomedov opened as a 2-to-1 favorite to defeat Dvalishvili and bring the bantamweight belt back home to Russia.

According to the top-ranked light heavyweight Magomed Ankalaev, the lightweight great Khabib Nurmagomedov would be able to defeat ‘Poatan’ Alex Pereira with his wrestling.
Magomed Ankalaev says Khabib Nurmagomedov Beats Alex Pereira
Magomed Ankalaev is a Russian-Dagestani mixed martial artist currently competing in the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division and has long been waiting to get a title shot against the Brazilian knockout machine Alex Pereira. He began his career in amateur MMA and combat sambo, winning several championships before turning pro in 2014.
Alex Pereira is currently listed as a slight underdog in a potential future UFC bout against Magomed Ankalaev. Pereira, the light heavyweight champion, opened with odds of +120, while Ankalaev is favored at -140. Oddsmakers seem to favor Ankalaev’s wrestling background as a potential advantage in this matchup. Check out more info at bet777 right here.
Khabib Nurmagomedov is a retired Russian-Dagestani MMA fighter who is considered one of the all-time greats in sport having retired with a perfect 29-0 record. Nurmagomedov’s fighting style was distinguished by his exceptional wrestling and grappling skills, which he developed through his background in sambo. The Eagle’ as a coach has created several world champions such as Usman Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev, and Belal Muhammad, among others.
Brazil’s Alex Pereira is a former two-division kickboxing world champion who transitioned to MMA and has been able to pick up middleweight and light heavyweight titles in the UFC. He is feared for his thunderous punching power. Beginning his venture into MMA quite late in his life, it is believed that his wrestling is lacking however very few fighters have succeeded in taking him down so it remains a question.
Magomed Ankalaev explained in an interview with Islam Babadzhanov that Khabib Nurmagomedov could likely defeat Alex Pereira as ‘Poatan’ lacks wrestling. He explained:
“I’ve never wrestled with Khabib, I’ve not faced him, so it’s hard to answer that question. Pereira, I think if anyone who, Khabib, if he takes him down, I think, he’ll finish it. Why? Because Pereira doesn’t have wrestling. He doesn’t know how to get up. And he also hasn’t been in hard fights where wrestling is present.”
Dagestan’s Ankalaev has remained unbeaten since his singular MMA career loss in 2018. Since then, he has defeated notable fighters including Nikita Krylov, Volkan Oezdemir, Thiago Santos, Anthony Smith, Johnny Walker, and, most recently, Aleksandar Raki?.
Dagestan’s Magomed Ankalaev has a bone to pick with Pereira and is hoping to get a shot at the throne in 2025. He sees wrestling as a major disadvantage for the knockout striker. Ankalaev’s assessment highlights the classic striker vs. grappler matchup in MMA. Despite Pereira’s formidable striking ability, Ankalaev believes Khabib Nurmagomedov’s world-class wrestling would be the deciding factor. Even at a higher weight class, Nurmagomedov’s grappling could potentially neutralize Pereira’s knockout power.

Daniel Cormier is steering clear of the never-ending rivalry between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Anyone who’s followed mixed martial arts for the last 6-7 years is well aware of the animosity between ‘The Eagle’ and the Irishman — a feud that came to a head at UFC 229 in October 2018 when the two squared off inside the Octagon in what would become the biggest fight in promotional history.
Even after ‘The Eagle’ earned a fourth-round submission victory over McGregor that night, the fight was far from over. Nurmagomedov notoriously (no pun intended) lept over the Octagon fence and went after McGregor’s cornermen — specifically Dillon Danis who was McGregor’s BJJ coach at the time.
To this day, Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor is still the most-watched fight of all time for the UFC, bringing in more than two million buys on pay-per-view. And even though that event was more than six years ago, it is still one of the most heated conflicts in combat sports.
Cormier Reveals why he doesn’t interview ‘Mystic Mac’
That’s probably why Cormier, who is a close personal friend of Nurmagomedov, has steered clear of trying to interview the Irish megastar on one of his many platforms.
“I don’t try to request McGregor for interviews,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “I don’t think that I would get him but I’m just saying it’s not a request I make every time I’m there. But this like, part of the course for these dudes. Because honestly, Khabib’s not just a teammate. He’s family. And they’re like that with everyone and they feel like if someone’s in conflict, especially at the level that Jones and I.
“Jones and I were in conflict, they’re very stern in the side they pick. And it’s kind of refreshing because most people aren’t like that guys. They’re just not, especially us, as Americans. So, watching that, that wasn’t crazy for me. Dude, he really is the man. Khabib is the man. He’s got to be one of the most genuine humans I’ve ever met.”
Even if you’ve lived under a rock, you might have heard about the conflict between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov. The UFC lightweight superstars fought for the title in October 2018, and soon after submitting the Irishman in the fourth, Nurmagomedov jumped over the Octagon to attack Dillon Danis.
UFC 229 ended with one of the most heated brawls in the promotion’s history. To this day, “The Eagle” has never tried to mend his relationship with McGregor and they’re likely rivals for life.
Nurmagmedov’s close relationship with former UFC double champ Daniel Cormier is also no secret. The duo makes for a popular bromance in MMA circles and over the years, their bond has strengthened considerably. So much so that Nurmagomedov and Cormier consider each other as close as family.
During the latest episode of 3 Rounds on his YouTube channel, Cormier admitted to no longer approaching McGregor for interviews and other media interactions. The reason? “The Notorious” conflicts with “The Eagle.”
“I don’t try to request McGregor for interviews. I don’t think that I would get him but I’m just saying it’s not a request I make every time I’m there. But this like, part of the course for these dudes. Because honestly, Khabib’s not just a teammate. He’s family. Khabib is the man. He’s got to be one of the most genuine humans I’ve ever met.”
The former UFC heavyweight champ also highlighted the time when Nurmagomedov claimed Jones would never be a friend because of the latter’s conflict with DC. Cormier acknowledged that the undefeated UFC lightweight’s philosophy is not very common in the United States, but he agrees with it now.
Both Cormier and Nurmagomedov have retired from MMA, but it is safe to assume their close friendship will remain strong behind the scenes.

Lists are always going to create discussion in regards to which options should or shouldn’t have made it onto the final version. This is no different with ESPN’s Top 10 men’s MMA fighters of the 21st century list.
Unsurprisingly, the current UFC heavyweight champion and consensus greatest of all time, Jon Jones, takes the top spot with the usual cast following behind him. Welterweight great Georges St-Pierre is the runner-up with the long-time champion of the weight class above him, Anderson Silva, rounding out the top three.
Dominant champions Demetrious Johnson and Khabib Nurmagomedov make up the top five whilst Fedor Emelianenko, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, BJ Penn and Kamaru Usman complete the full list.
On a recent episode of the Jaxxon Podcast, two men who are in a great position to debate the list did just that as Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Liddell spoke about who could have earned a spot that ultimately didn’t.
Jackson, perhaps controversially, said that he isn’t sure whether the number five pick had enough fights at the highest level to be considered, especially when someone like Matt Hughes didn’t make the cut.
“Nothing against Khabib, I just don’t think he fought enough fights. To be on there and to not have Matt Hughes on there, you know what I’m saying cus he was champion for a long time.”
Liddell, who did make the cut, responded by agreeing with his former opponent’s take that Hughes deserves a mention. He also named one other great champion that would have undoubtedly been in contention, even if some of his best work was done before he arrived in the UFC.
“If you look at the strength of opponents, you know. There’s some other guys in there, José Aldo. A beast man, for years. Those lists are lists man and all those guys are quality guys. It’s tough really.”
