A phenomenal lightweight title fight is approaching in April. UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov puts his title up for grabs against Tony Ferguson on April 18 inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It’s a fight the mixed martial arts (MMA) community has been looking forward to for quite some time. Four times the UFC has tried to book the bout in the past, however, each time it has fallen through due to injury. Now, fans are hoping the fifth time will be the charm. Taking to Twitter, fellow top-ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier has offered his prediction for the fight.

Poirier said he’s picking “The Eagle” to retain his title when it’s all said and done.

Many think that, if Nurmagomedov can take Ferguson to the ground, “El Cucuy” can do enough damage from the bottom to still trouble the Russian. Given his jiu-jitsu pedigree, many believe Ferguson might even be able to submit Nurmagomedov from the bottom. However, Poirier doesn’t buy into that theory.

Poirier comes off of a submission loss to Nurmagomedov in Abu Dhabi. “The Diamond” was challenging Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title in the UFC 242 main event.

What do you think about Poirier picking Nurmagomedov to win against Ferguson in Brooklyn?

Tony Ferguson has been talking up his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov .

Ferguson will challenge Khabib for the lightweight title at UFC 249 on April 18 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

This fight has become the most anticipated in all of MMA
after four previous bookings fell through. The pair have been scheduled to fight
in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Everyone is now hoping it will be fifth time luck
and we can actually see these two finally square off.

“El Cucuy” is currently riding a 12-fight unbeaten run in the
UFC which includes wins over Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee, Rafael
Dos Anjos and Edson Barboza.

Ferguson played down the magnitude of the fight and accused Khabib of quitting in the build up to UFC 209 when speaking to Ariel Helwani. (H/T Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show)

“He’s
just another opponent. I already beat that dude. I showed up to UFC 209 and I
saw it in his face, I saw quit,”

The number one
lightweight contender also believes when they do fight Khabib won’t be able to
handle the pressure that comes with facing him.

“I
called him out, called my shot and it worked.
I’m in this dude’s head,” Ferguson said. “He’s looking at me. He’s going to
train so hard. He’s going to be so nervous he’s going to make a mistake. I’m
going to capitalize on that. I’m going to catch him during the scrambles.
Scrambled eggs, baby. I’m going to make him piss blood. I owe him two to the
chops, and he owes me 20 push-ups. This guys got an issue, and his name is Tony
Ferguson. And I’m coming after him. It’s hunting season, baby.”

Justin Gaethje is down to step in in case UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson gets injured for their scheduled April title fight.

Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson will go one-on-one on April 18 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. According to veteran mixed martial arts (MMA) reporter Luke Thomas, No. 4-ranked UFC lightweight Gaethje is willing to stand by as a backup fighter in case either Nurmagomedov or Ferguson get injured ahead of April. Of course, he’d need to be properly compensated for his services.

“.@Justin_Gaethje tells me he isn’t against the idea of being a substitute in the event Ferguson or Nurmagomedov falls out, but it’s not his preference. Would need UFC to cover cost of a training camp. Still prefers to get winner of that bout.”

Nurmagomedov is one of the most dominant champions MMA has ever seen. He is undefeated in his career at 28-0, coming off a submission title defense over Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi. Now, he’ll take on the man who many believe has the best chance of handing him his first career loss.

Ferguson is on a ridiculous 12-fight win streak, his latest win being a TKO win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 238. He’ll finally get his long-awaited shot at, not just the lightweight title, but Nurmagomedov himself.

What do you think about Gaethje being open to standing by in case Nurmagomedov or Ferguson pull out?

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson is official. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reports that both Nurmagomedov and Ferguson have signed their respective contracts for an April 18 show in Brooklyn, New York from the Barclays Center.

Ferguson and his representatives from the Ballengee Group met with UFC executives in Las Vegas on Friday (November 29, 2019). There, “El Cucuy” formally agreed to the fight. Nurmagomedov had signed his contract for the fight earlier this week. This is the fifth time the fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson has been booked in their careers.

Nurmagomedov comes off of a successful title defense against Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi this past September. “The Eagle” submitted Poirier with a rear-naked choke in the third round. He extended his undefeated record to 28-0 with the victory. Now, he takes on Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion who is on a ridiculous 12-fight win streak.

His most recent victory came with a TKO win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 238. That fight, however, was stopped by the doctor after the second round. Now, arguably, the two best lightweights in the world will finally get the chance to go one-on-one after four prior failed attempts. Fight fans now sit and keep their fingers crossed that neither Nurmagomedov or Ferguson suffer injuries before April 18.

What do you think about Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson being set for April?
