Modestas Bukauskas has come to the defense of Khalil Rountree Jr.

Rountree returned to the win column with an impressive striking display against Bukauskas that resulted in a second-round TKO win at UFC Vegas 36 last night.

The final blow was a vicious oblique kick from Rountree that buckled Bukauskas’ knee and ended the contest right away. Bukuaskas reportedly tore his MCL, ACL and PCL which only means he’ll be spending a long time on the sidelines.

Many observers as well as UFC fighters called for the kick to be banned soon after.

Of course, that’s not a knock on Rountree who was simply executing a move that is legal as per the ruleset. However, the oblique kick is certainly detracting from his impressive performance and victory.

To that, Bukauskas responded:

“Getting MRI when I get home…probably ligament damage…And yo please give my opponent some slack, that kick was all good, it was my job to defend and I didn’t. Let the man enjoy his victory”

Certainly a classy response from Bukauskas who hopefully can return to action as soon as possible.

UFC light heavyweight Khalil Rountree isn’t going anywhere.

Rountree hasn’t competed since a first-round TKO defeat to Ion Cutelaba in September last year before later revealing in December that his next fight would be his last.

However, it appears the 30-year-old had a change of heart as he recently revealed he had signed a new contract with the Las Vegas-based promotion. In addition, he is looking to return early next year as he expects to put on the most exciting fights yet.

“I’m extremely happy to announce that I’ve decided to extend my contract with the @ufc and will be making my return at the start of 2021 • After being away from the sport for over one year now it feels like I have the opportunity to start fresh. I’m back in the game 100% like I’ve just begun, ready to put on the most exciting fights you’ve seen from me yet.

“I’ve had lots of down time to reflect, reinvent and tighten my circle. I’ve taken the time to look at myself from the inside out and I’ve shared with you all the ups and downs publicly. Now it’s time to bite down and fight harder than ever. I’m ready, and you should be too. If you know a company or brand that you’d like to see me repping, please tag them below as I’m looking for sponsors/partners to grow with. #winningticket @mickmaynard2”

Rountree has alternated between wins and losses in his last four outings. Before his setback to Cutelaba, he enjoyed arguably the best performance of his career with a dominant unanimous decision win over Eryk Anders.

He was looking to get back on the win column against Sam Alvey in March only for the event to be canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead, he will look to have a fresh start in 2021 now.

Khalil Rountree is seemingly fighting his last fight.

The UFC light heavyweight recently posted on social media that his next fight will be his last as he appears to be retiring:

“My next fight will be my last. So be sure to watch. Date announced soon,” he wrote in an Instagram story.

Rountree has had a mixed bag of results in recent years. Last year, he knocked out Gokhan Saki in a huge upset at UFC 226. However, he would quickly get knocked out himself when he faced rising star Johnny Walker at UFC Buenos Aires.

Rountree would return with a bang as he outclassed Eryk Anders with multiple knockdowns on his way to a unanimous decision win earlier this year at UFC 236.

However, he would alternate between wins and losses again following a TKO defeat to Ion Cutelaba at UFC Copenhagen in September.

It appears that loss might have affected Rountree more than ever if he really is only going to compete one more time in the Octagon.

There are no further details about his next fight but stay tuned as LowKickMMA will post any updates regarding Rountree’s last outing.
