White couldn’t contain his excitement when speaking about Chimaev’s win Megan Olivi on the UFC Vegas 11 post show, he said.

“One punch. Seventeen seconds. This kid is special. He’s different than any fighter I’ve ever seen. I’ve been in the business for a very long time, I’ve seen a lot of greats come and go; this kid is absolutely special and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

White almost ran out of expletives to describe Chimaev when he later spoke to reporters at the UFC Vegas 11 post-fight press conference, he said.

“The guy’s special. I’ve been in this game my whole life, I’ve never seen anything like him. He’s special, he’s different and he wants to fight again. I’ve never been in a position where I’m like, ‘Who’s next? How do we get him a fight? How do we get him over here, how do we get him over there? How do we do this, how do we do that?’ It’s fun and I like it and I think when you’re a fight fan a guy like this is who you love to watch and follow and hate and whatever it might be. This guy is one of the most special fighters I’ve ever seen, if not the most special guy that I’ve ever come across.”

This latest Chimaev win has slightly altered things for White. The UFC boss says we may see the 26-year-old take on another opponent before facing long-time contender Demian Maia.

That’s what everybody is saying,” White said. “This guy is special, man. It’s true. … I don’t know what I do with him yet. He might fight before Maia and fight Maia, too. Maia’s not going to be ready in time for this kid.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

UFC prospect Khamzat Chimaev is looking to make a statement when he fights for the first time since July at UFC Fight Night: Covington vs. Woodley this weekend.

Chimaev impressed during his first two UFC bouts which took place on ‘Fight Island’ earlier this summer. The undefeated 26-year-old took out Welsh middleweight John Phillips in dominant fashion before quickly turning around and beating UFC newcomer Rhys McKee at welterweight even more impressively just 14 days later.

The Swedish fighter is now scheduled to fight long-time UFC middleweight Meerschaert on Saturday before taking on BJJ legend Demian Maia next month. Many including Meerschaert have found the double-booking to be disrespectful but Chimaev doesn’t seem to understand that notion.

“I don’t know why he’s disrespected,” Chimaev told reporters during the UFC Vegas 11 virtual media day. “Amateur boxing people go with five or six fights. I go fight here and now after one month, but I did in 10 days two fights. I don’t know why he feels like this.”

The two men have already bumped into each other at the fighter hotel and Chimaev told reporters exactly what went down.

“He speaks too much, he talks too much,” Chimaev said. “He say, ‘You disrespect me.’ I didn’t like that. I said, ‘I’m going to smash you, chicken.’ And he say nothing and I go from there.”

Come fight night Chiamaev doesn’t envisage the middleweight veteran causing him any problems

“I’m better everywhere,” Chimaev explained. “I’m better wrestling, I’m better grappling. I’m better in striking. No one going to stop me. … I don’t know what’s going to happen on Saturday night, but I’m going to go 100 percent to kill this guy. That’s what I know. Speaking to Submission Radio ahead of the September 19 card headlined by his friend Tyron Woodley, Askren revealed he remains unconvinced by Chimaev. ‘Funky’ is not impressed by the level of opposition he has fought since joining the UFC earlier this year, he said.

“The hard part about it is, we saw him twice in the UFC. But the first guy he fought, John Phillips, he’s 1-4 in the UFC. So, he was very unsuccessful. And the second guy he fought was a new addition to the UFC. So, he has not won a UFC fight. And so it’s like, ok, well, he definitely smashed these guys, there’s no doubt about that, but are these guys Gerald Meerschaert level competition? And the answer to that, is no, they’re definitely not. So, sometimes people can look great against guys who aren’t as good, and then when they step into a little competition, it’s a lot harder. So, I don’t really know what to expect out of Chimaev. I know Gerald is really good, he’s really tough. But yeah, I don’t know about Chimaev yet.”

Askren believes Meerschaert may be able to withstand early pressure from Chimaev and pull of a monumental upset win this weekend, he explained.

“I think one of the things is, Gerald’s really hard to submit. He’s really hard to control. He never wrestled, but fairly solid wrestling. So, one of the things I can see happening for sure, is Chimaev comes out like a ball of fire and isn’t able to do the damage, isn’t able to get the submissions, and then Gerald starts taking over as the fight moves on. I can see that happening one hundred percent.”
