UFC 300

Ariel Helwani dropped a potential bombshell on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, revealing that the UFC is frantically working to put together a welterweight title clash between reigning champion Leon Edwards and undefeated Chechen monster Khamzat Chimaev for the UFC 300 main event.

After making a series of fast and furious announcements regarding April 13th’s massive landmark event in Las Vegas, UFC CEO Dana White has gone radio silent. According to Helwani, the promotion knows which fight they want to announce for the highly anticipated headliner, but securing Chimaev’s entry into the United States is becoming increasingly difficult.

“If the UFC had their way… If they could snap their fingers and make the biggest fight in their mind happen — and the fight that they’ve been working on happen — and have their say as to what is the main event for UFC 300, I think that they would make Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev. I believe when Dana White is talking bout the hurdles and the issues, I believe that’s about securing Khamzat’s ability to fight in the United States.

“This has been rumored for quite some time that he has issues coming over to the States. The last time he fought here was in Jacksonville almost two years ago. I believe that’s been part of the holdup. If they can’t secure that matchup, I believe they would look at Khamzat vs. [Dricus Du Plessis], but I think the top choice is Leon vs. Khamzat.”

Chimaev’s struggles to obtain a temporary work visa could be related to his close relationship with the Head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov. Frequently employing totalitarian and repressive tactics in his rule, Kadyrov has come under criticism for a wide array of human rights abuses, including forced disappearance, torture, assassinations, and anti-gay purges in his country. He has also played a role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The UFC is circling multiple potential headliners for April 13

Depending on how things play out with Khamzat Chimaev, the UFC has a few contingency plans in place according to Helwani. Aside from the heavily rumored middleweight title tilt between the newly crowned king of the division — Dricus Du Plessis — and former two-time champ Israel Adesanya, the UFC is also keeping a potential 170-pound showdown between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad in its back pocket.

We will go out on a limb and say that Edwards vs. Muhammad is likely the least enticing option for both the promotion and the fans. Of course, the prospect of Khamzat Chimaev’s return to welterweight will certainly raise some eyebrows. After all, the last time he was scheduled to compete in the weight class, he stepped on the scale eight pounds over the limit.

Which potential headliner would you most be excited to see at UFC 300?

Jack Hermansson calls for fight with Khamzat Chimaev next I would fight him UFC

After a gritty victory over Joe Pyfer at UFC Vegas 86, Jack Hermansson is looking to continue his newly established momentum in 2024 by taking out some more top middleweight talent.

It was pretty obvious that Hermansson was playing gatekeeper at UFC Vegas 86. Pyfer is the new and exciting star, and no doubt the UFC brass probably hoped for another thrilling finish to add to the highlight reel of ‘Bodybagz’. Hermansson didn’t let it happen though. He weathered the storm that was the tenacious onslaught of Pyfer’s electric striking and slowly began to unravel his opponent.

As the fight wore on, Jack Hermansson seemed to be more and more firmly in control of the pace and direction of the matchup. He hammered the calf of Pyfer with brutal kicks and fed him a stinging jab. By the end of round five, there was no question as to who the victor was, and the judges awarded ‘The Joker’ the decision victory.

Jack Hermansson discusses his next potential opponents

During the post-fight interview, Hermansson opened up about who he’d like to face next: “I just watch the rankings and I fought a lot of guys up there,” Hermansson said (H/T MMA Fighting). “Obviously, I can’t come back with a fight with an unranked opponent and go direct to the top. I need to fight someone that’s closer to me in the rankings. I think [Imavov] makes the most sense at the moment.”

While Imavov is a solid choice, ‘The Joker’ was still later questioned about a potential fight with Khamzat Chimaev as well. “Of course, I’m willing to fight Khamzat,” Hermansson said. “I know there has been talk of him and [Jared] Cannonier and some of the other top names, so we’ll see what is happening. But I would be open for that fight [against Chimaev].”

Jared Cannonier touted as ideal opponent to fight Khamzat Chimaev in UFC return he's perfect for him

Former middleweight title challenger, Jared Cannonier has been touted as an ideal opponent to test the unbeaten, Khamzat Chimaev in his return to the Octagon, according to former divisional champion, Michael Bisping.

Cannonier, the current number four ranked middleweight contender, has been sidelined since extended his winning run to two straight fights back in June, turning in a decision win over fellow former title challenger, Marvin Vettori in a Fight of the Night outing.

Prior to that, the former light heavyweight landed a controversial split decision win over former undisputed middleweight kingpin, Sean Strickland – with the victory returning him to the winner’s enclosure after his title siege defeat to common-foe, Israel Adesanya.

As for Chimaev, the AllStars MMA veteran co-headlined UFC 294 back in October of last year, turning in a close, majority decision win over former undisputed welterweight champion and pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman – improving his unbeaten record to 13-0.

Jared Cannonier backed to fight Khamzat Chimaev

And linked with a slew of opponents for his comeback from the likes of Paulo Costa, to the above-mentioned former champions, Strickland, and Adesanya, Chimaev should be tested by the returning Cannonier next, according to Hall of Fame inductee, Bisping.

“I would like to see him (Khamzat Chimaev) against a Jared Cannonier – because if he can’t take him down, and he can’t fix that problem with the cardio, then he’s going to have a real long-term problem going forward,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “But who knows – maybe there’s a reason why he was running out of gas, OK? Probably because he doesn’t pace himself. He goes forward straight away, (and) wrestles.”

“Jared Cannonier, in my humble opinion, is the perfect opponent [for Khamzat Chimev],” Bisping explained. “There’s others out there. There’s Sean Strickland. They had a little moment in the gym, as well. So, Sean Strickland – Khamzat Chimaev, take my money. I’d love to see that one. But Khamzat – Jared Cannonier – that would be great.”
