Khamzat Chimaev tipped to bring tough fight to Kamaru Usman in UFC clash

Former light-heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith sees Khamzat Chimaev as a tough stylistic matchup for Kamaru Usman.

It has been rumoured that Kamaru Usman and Khamzat Chimaev will square off later this year on the Abu Dhabi PPV in October. It would be a meeting of a decorated and experienced former champion in Usman and an up-and-coming brute in Khamzat Chimaev, who is unlike anyone that the MMA world has seen before.

The matchup has all the making to be a great one and the winner would put themselves in prime position to fight for a title, but when analysing the fight Anthony Smith feels that Usman could be at a disadvantage. Talking the Believe You Me podcasts which he co-hosts with Michael Bisping, Smith discussed the potential welterweight bust up.

It’s a bold move, for sure,” Smith said. “It says a lot about where he is mentally because I think a lot of people were kind of writing him off just a little bit and saying, ‘Oh, he’s done. He’s probably just gonna kind of fade off into retirement.’ But him wanting to fight Khamzat is the total opposite of that.

“That’s a tough fight for Kamaru if I’m just being very honest and fair with my analysis. I think what he does well kind of fits right into Khamzat’s game. I think maybe a younger less beat-up Kamaru, I think that fight’s a little bit different. He’s not as much of a wrestler as he used to be. He used to chase the takedown relentlessly. I don’t think he even has the capability to really do that anymore just with his knees and some of that stuff.” (H/T MMAFighting)

Undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev has declared himself as the “king” of both his current division – and a division he is expected to move to in his Octagon comeback later this year; middleweight.

Chimaev, the current #4 ranked welterweight contender, slipped from the top-3 in the official welterweight rankings earlier this month, following Belal Muhammad’s impressive unanimous decision win over common-foe, former title challenger, Gilbert Burns at UFC 288.

Yet to feature since September of last year in the co-main event of UFC 279, in a period of fierce inactivity for the Chechnya native, Chimaev most recently improved to 12-0 as a professional with a first round D’Arce choke submission victory against Kevin Holland.

Expected to make a move to the middleweight limit for an Octagon return later this year, earmarked for UFC 294 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE – Chimaev has been linked with a fight against former pound-for-pound number one and former welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman

Khamzat Chimaev calls for UFC championship opportunities

Claiming this week that he would also defeat two-time and current undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya without strikes if they competed against each other, Chimaev has now declared himself as the “king” of both the welterweight and middleweight limits.

“I want to fight for the title, so for me it doesn’t matter which weight class,” Khamzat Chimaev said on his YouTube channel. “I can go [170 pounds], but i don’t want to make weight for a nobody at [170 pounds], why am i going to do that? I’m number three – actually, that number for me is nothing. I feel I’m the king of this weight class and I’m the king of [185 pounds] as well.”

“So, just give me a title shot,” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “I’m ready for both. I’m ready for (Kamaru) Usman. I’m ready Leon (Edwards), I’m ready for Israel (Adesanya). Doesn’t matter. I’m ready for everybody. Just ask Dana (White) when I say no. Never. I want to fight I am the best, and when you feel you’re the best you have to fight with the best, everyone.”

Khamzat Chimaev pokes at Israel Adesanya everybody knows he's going to lose the UFC title to me

Undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev appears set for a move a division higher to the middleweight ranks – and claims it’s just a matter of time before he lands the undisputed UFC title in a clamored-for showdown with gold holder, Israel Adesanya.

Chimaev, who has competed just twice at the middleweight limit during his tenure with the promotion in a pair of finishes over both John Philips and Gerald Meerschaert, is expected to make a return to the division for the foreseeable future in his next Octagon walk.

Last featuring in the co-main event of UFC 279 last September, the Chechen-born contender was initially scheduled to headline the pay-per-view event against Nate Diaz, however, was pulled from the clash after he missed the welterweight non-title limit by a staggering seven and a half pounds.

Improving to 12-0 as a professional at the flagship event, Chimaev submitted Kevin Holland in a one-sided first round D’Arce choke submission victory.

Expected to return to the Octagon at UFC 294 in October, Chimaev has welcomed a fight with former undisputed welteweight champion and former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman.

Khamzat Chimaev accuses the UFC of protecting Israel Adesanya from him

Weighing up a future fight with City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya in a middleweight title fight in the future, Chimaev claimed that fans were chomping at the bit for a showdown between the pair.

“For Israel (Adesanya), there’s nobody there – only me,” Khamzat Chimaev said on his YouTube channel. “So, if you spoke about money, if you ask the fans, they want to see me and Israel [fight].”

“I’m a bad matchup for him,” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “Everyone knows he’s going to lose the title [to me]. That’s why they [the UFC] save that guy. You know they built him up. They don’t want to lose him that fight. [I’d] finish that guy without punches, and that’s why they’re scared. Then [his] story’s dead, you know? They don’t want to kill that guy. Maybe the guy makes money for them, but I still make money, as well, so I don’t know what’s going on.”

Also linked to a middleweight division return against would-be common-foe, Paulo Costa, Chimaev took umbrage with the Brazilian’s recent poking at him, claiming he would “kill” the former title challenger if they shared the Octagon

Tate has also been known to be quite chummy with other combat sports standouts. Most recently, the love-him-or-hate-him kickboxer was seen speaking with UFC superstar Khamzat Chimaev on FaceTime.

Fellow UFC standout Sean O’Malley shared his reaction to the unique pairing on his The BrO’Malley Show podcast.

“Andrew Tate’s still f*cking popping. I’m still f*ckin’ seeing him doing all his sh*t. Every f*cking… All day on Twitter and sh*t. He’s got a lot of good quotes,” O’Malley said.

Sean O’Malley and Khamzat Chimaev Are Gearing Up For Their 2023 Returns

Andrew Tate was released from a Romanian prison in April, nearly four months removed from his initial arrest. He is currently under house arrest while he continues to face multiple charges, including rape and forming an organized criminal group. Tate was arrested alongside his brother, Tristan Tate, and two others. He has vehemently denied the accusations.

As for Khamzat Chimaev, the 12-0 fighter was last seen in September at UFC 279 where he ragdolled Kevin Holland en route to a first-round finish. In a recent video shared on his YouTube channel, ‘Borz’ suggested that a clash with former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman was on the docket for his return at UFC 294 in October.

Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait quite as long to see Sean O’Malley back in action. The colorful fan favorite will step into the Octagon for his first UFC title fight on August 19 when the promotion returns to Boston for UFC 292. O’Malley will headline the event opposite reigning bantamweight world champion Aljamain Sterling.

Khamzat Chimaev hits out at Paulo Costa UFC 291 I want to kill this guy

Undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev has predicted a loss for one-time middleweight championship challenger, Paulo Costa at UFC 291 in July – as the Brazilian draws a soon-to-be common foe, Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Ikram Aliskerov.

Chimaev, the current #4 ranked welterweight contender, has been linked with a return to the Octagon at UFC 294 in October on ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE – and particulary, rumored to be close to a fight against either former welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, or the above-mentioned, Costa.

As for the Belo Horizonte native, Costa recently agreed terms on a new contract with the UFC earlier this year, and is set to begin the first fight on that new multi-fight deal at UFC 291 at the Delta Center on July 29. – taking on incoming common-opposition, Aliskerov.

A product of Dana White’s Contender Series back in September of last year, Aliskerov improved to 14-1 with a first round KO win over Phil Hawes at UFC 288 back in May of this year in his Octagon bow.

Suffering just a single professional loss, Aliskerov’s sole professional defeat came in the form of a 2019 knockout loss to the previously noted, Chimaev when both competed under the Brave CF banner.

Khamzat Chimaev takes firm aim at UFC rival, Paulo Costa

Sharing his thoughts on the pairing this summer, Chimaev, who has taken umbrage with recent comments made about him by Costa – predicted a defeat for the Brazilian against Aliskerov at UFC 291.

“Paulo (Costa) has like, spoken a lot of sh*t about me,” Khamzat Chimaev said on his YouTube channel. “That guy, I want to smash him. I want to kill this guy. I was doing a lot of things and he wants to fight with the other guy [Ikram Aliskerov]. The guy, I fought him a long time before. Three or four years ago, before UFC. I win against the guy.”

“I think the guy (Aliskerov) will beat him (Costa) as well,” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “Paulo is not good. He’s sh*t, bro.  He just talks too much. He beat nobody. A close fight with (Yoel) Romero, only fighter he wins against. Other people, I don’t know. Nobody knows these guys. I don’t know who he beat.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Khamzat Chimaev blasts Colby Covington title shot UFC he has beat nobodies

UFC welterweight Khamzat Chimaev is not happy with Colby Covington being the next challenger for the welterweight championship.

It has been over eight months since the usually active Chimaev competed, last time out however he came out unscathed from his two-minute mauling of Kevin Holland. Rumours have been circling though, ‘Borz’ could be facing Kamaru Usman next time out and a win could see ether man straight into title contention.

Khamzat Chimaev slams Colby Covington

While Chimaev may not be next in line for the title shot, it still did not stop him expressing his dislike of Covington, who is set to challenge Leon Edwards for his 170lb title.

They’re giving it to Colby, that (next title shot). When did he win his last fight? I don’t remember who he wins against,” Chimaev said. “He’s a nobody, he wins against nobodies. Usman broke his chin two times. He knocked out that guy. He’s sh*t. And they give that chance to him because maybe he’s from the USA. They want the belt for him. I am from Sweden, live in Dubai. Maybe they don’t want to give that belt to me. Only that thing I see. I don’t know.” (H/T MMANews)

While it seemed that Chimaev would square off with Paulo Costa and would be pursuing a career at middleweight, UFC President Dana White seemed to have other plans for Chimaev.

“It’s a fight that Usman wants, that’s no secret,” White said. “Usman literally came to the office to lobby for that fight. I told him I love him. Usman is one of the best guys we’ve ever worked with. I love working with the guy. Look at all the things he’s accomplished.” (H/T MMAJunkie)
