Khamzat Chimaev, Tiger Muay Thai

Khamzat Chimaev is back training at the famous Tiger Muay Thai gym in Phuket, Thailand.

The Undefeated star trains out of Allstar Training Center but has put in some work at Tiger Muay Thai, one of the best gyms in the world. Several elite level mixed martial artists have trained at the Thailand gym, including UFC champions Alexander Volkanovski, Petr Yan, Valentina Shevchenko, and Israel Adesanya

This isn’t the first time Chimaev has spent time at the gym. He trained there before his fight against Gilbert Burns in early 2022.

The 28-year-old has been dominant in his MMA career. Chimaev (12-0) has six knockouts, five submissions, and one decision under his belt. His UFC run include wins over Kevin Holland, Gilbert Burns, Li Jingliang, Gerald Meerschaert, Rhys McKee, and John Phillips. The ‘Fight Island’ standout holds the UFC record for the quickest time between three victories at 66 days.

Khamzat Chimaev Does Not Have A Fight Booked

“Borz” is not yet scheduled for a fight in 2023. In a December 2022 episode of his VLOG, Chimaev provided a glimpse into his intense training camp. The No. 3 ranked welterweight opened up about wanting a fight in March but was adamant that no one wanted to sign a bout agreement.

Gonna fight somebody. I don’t know who. They change opponents all the time. Every week, I have a new opponent but nobody wants to fight. The guys speak a lot of trash talk, a lot of s**t about me. ‘I want to fight you! I want to fight you!’ But when it comes to the fight and sign the contract, everyone runs away.”

The Russia native even called out UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira, who he’s gone back-and-forth with online. UFC President Dana White recently hinted at a possible Khamzat Chimaev-Colby Covington fight during the UFC Vegas 67 post-fight press conference.

After a 170-pound weight miss at UFC 279, it is unknown whether Chimaev’s next fight will be at welterweight or middleweight. In the meantime, Chimaev is sharpening his skills at Tiger Muay Thai while he waits for the next challenge in his UFC career.

Alex Pereira critical of Khamzat Chimaev: “He’s running from his own weight class”

Let’s just say that UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira is not the biggest fan of Khamzat Chimaev.

While Chimaev is ranked at no. 3 in the UFC’s welterweight division, he also has visions of taking over the middleweight and light-heavyweight divisions as well, and aims to become the UFC’s first ever three-division world champion by time his career is said and done.

Pereira recently went on record stating the following in regards to Chimaev, translated by InsideFighting:

“Well, he (Chimaev) mentioned a title defense. But it was right after my last fight, so I think it was kind of impossible. I called him out for a light-heavyweight title fight (at UFC 282), but I wasn’t in a position to do either. I called him out anyway just to see if he was up to it. I knew he didn’t want the fight.

“A little while ago, he talked about fighting at middleweight and also at light-heavyweight. So he’s in the lower weight class (welterweight). But in his weight class, when he’s maybe already the next title challenger, it’s kind 0f like there are no plans for him to fight.

“He doesn’t want to, because if he loses, like everyone can, if he loses in his own weight class, it ends all the noise he’s making. So he’s running from his own weight class because he’s the next title challenger.”

Following Chimaev’s callout of Pereira, Pereira then responded when Jiri Prochazka withdrew from his first title defense against Glover Teixeira at UFC 282 and offered a vacant title fight between the two of them.

It’s not like the UFC would’ve made that fight anyway, given neither have ever competed at 205 lbs in their MMA careers, and neither of them are ranked in the division.

On the contrary, it is believed Alex Pereira will make the first defense of his newly claimed title against former champion Israel Adesanya in their immediate rematch, and fourth overall fight together.

What’s next for Khamzat Chimaev though? Colby Covington, Robert Whittaker, Paulo Costa?

Robert Whittaker was devastated to find out that Paulo Costa had pulled out of their scheduled scrap at UFC 284 next month.

‘The Reaper’ was scheduled for a top 10 showdown with ‘The Eraser’ in front of a hometown crowd as the UFC heads to Perth, Australia on February 11. Unfortunately, Robert Whittaker is no longer part of the evening’s plans as his opponent withdrew from the contest amid a contract dispute with the promotion. During an appearance on MainEvent in his native Australia, Whittaker shared his disappointment with the bout cancellation.

“It was very upsetting because I planned to train all the way through Christmas and to get the work in. I had planned sparring on Christmas day. That’s how committed I was to the cause. I’ll do the festive period, but I’ll get through it. I’ll train through it and then I’ll go on holiday with the kids after the fight, but for it to fall through… Yeah, it sucks. I’m glad I kept the receipts for the Christmas presents. Seriously, it sucks. I put in a lot of work for it to fall through the way it did. Especially after I made all these big claims that I will be there in Perth. I’m sorry to all my fans and stuff for it to fall through again, not of my own fault though. Yeah, it was upsetting.”

Robert Whittaker did confirm that the UFC is still actively looking to book him for a fight in March or April, but he is yet to sign on the dotted line for a specific date or opponent. One man heavily rumored to meet ‘The Reaper’ inside the Octagon was the undefeated Chechen monster Khamzat Chimaev. However, Robert Whittaker put out the flames on that quickly, confirming that he was never once offered a fight with Chimaev, or anyone else for that matter, to keep his spot on the UFC 284 card.

“I wasn’t offered anybody, just to clarify that. It was just, we can’t get Costa across the line so we’re looking to reschedule in March or April”

Robert Whittaker Can See a UFC Title Fight With Alex Pereira in the Near Future

As far as who Robert Whittaker will meet next, ‘The Reaper’ believes a showdown with recent winner Sean Strickland is a possibility, but won’t rule out a potential title shot against new UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira.

“Looking at the division, it’s hard. For them not to put (Sean) Strickland in last minute against me in Perth. And there he would have had much more of a timeframe to work with if they gave me Strickland instead. It would have made sense, but if it’s not Strickland, then who is it in the top five that I haven’t fought? I can very well see Izzy-Pereira not happening. Izzy just letting me and Pereira punch on for a little bit and then him sliding in to fight the winner. That makes perfect sense if you write it down. It is a crazy world. It’s a crazy time for the division. What the UFC has planned for March and April is anybody’s guess at this point.”

Being an analyst of the fight game means that you don’t always get to be positive about every fighter and that can come with some complications.

Via their podcast together, Pound 4 Pound, former UFC champions Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman break down the biggest fights in combat sports.

They both try to be honest and that means hurting some feelings along the way if people end up hearing their criticisms.

Whilst some fighters may take a private dislike to others for the things they hear them say during pre or post-fight comments, there are others that have no problem making the analyst aware of this.

Cejudo returned from the Paris Olympics on the most recent episode where he told a story about being confronted by one of the most intimidating men on the UFC roster.

Henry Cejudo Describes Paris Confrontation With Khamzat Chimaev

After giving Usman several guesses at who had wanted to fight him in Paris by telling “The Nigerian Nightmare” that it was a wrestler that he has shared the Octagon with, Cejudo eventually revealed that it was Khamzat Chimaev who had a problem with him.

Cejudo said that whilst he never found out from the middleweight contender himself, he expects that Chimaev’s issue with him stems from comments he has made in the past about his ability as a fighter.

“Oh f***, I don’t know dude. I think these dudes take s*** so personable dude, I don’t know. I think obviously me cheering for you, me cheering for ‘Borrachinha’, me kind of telling the truth a little bit because I think as an analyst, people get a little, you have to tell the truth and I think that’s my biggest, I think that’s what, yeah I am comical and whatnot but typically when I do say certain things, it’s because I mean it.”

Cejudo then went on to explain what actually happened between them, which essentially boiled down to Chimaev scolding him from far away whilst being surrounded by an entourage.

“So that’s why I think but I was here, he was at the ticket line, I was outside trying to get my damn tickets because everything was sold out and I don’t even think he could get in either and then he sees me and he says like, ‘Henry Cejudo, you’re a rat piece of s***’. I kind of had a feeling this dude kind of had a, because he’s blocking from a lot of social media stuff. So then I’m just like, ‘Why? Why am I a piece of s***?’ And he said I’m just a piece of s***, like this is probably like 50-feet away like from each other.”

“Triple C” rounded out his thoughts on the matter by stating that Chimaev’s response to criticism could be an issue for him in his career progression based on the somewhat difficult position that he has found himself in as of late.

“I’m a troll 100% but to the level of trolling that I do, I’m a level of extreme even more so as a competitor. Something like this could really hurt Khamzat in the sense of him being truly emotional because how many fights has he pulled out of and how many fans and trolls you think are trolling him and how upset could you get? And the last thing you want to do is actually fight emotional.”

Sean Strickland’s Coach Names The Type Of Fighter Who Can Be Khamzat Chimaev’s ‘Kryptonite’

Sean Strickland’s coach, Eric Nicksick, recently shared his insights on a tactical approach that could be key to conquering Khamzat Chimaev in a fight.

Chimaev is poised to make his highly anticipated return in a five-round middleweight showdown against Robert Whittaker, serving as the co-main event of UFC 308, scheduled for October 26 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Initially, both fighters were slated to headline UFC Fight Night in Saudi Arabia on June 22. However, just weeks before the showdown, “Borz” was forced to withdraw due to an undisclosed illness. In a last-minute effort to save the main event, Ikram Aliskerov stepped up on short notice. Whittaker made quick work of Aliskerov, delivering a knockout victory in under two minutes.

The undefeated Chechen has earned a formidable reputation for his relentless and dominating fighting style. However, in the past two years, Chimaev’s momentum has been hampered by various setbacks, with illness being the primary factor behind his reduced activity.

Chimaev made his long-awaited return to the Octagon after a 13-month hiatus, squaring off against former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 294 last October. He dominated the first round with a strong start, but the fight quickly became intense as Usman staged a spirited comeback, turning the next two rounds into a fiercely competitive contest. Despite the back-and-forth battle, Chimaev ultimately secured a majority decision victory.

Nicksick believes that if “The Reaper” can weather Chimaev’s explosive onslaught in the first two rounds, he’ll present the toughest challenge “Borz” has ever encountered in the Octagon…

Nicksick Suggests Chimaev Might Falter If Pushed To ‘Deep Waters’ in Later Rounds

During a recent interview with Red Corner MMA, Nicksick provided his analysis of the showdown between Whittaker and Chimaev. The respected MMA coach heaped praise on Whittaker, hailing him as one of the all-time greats in the middleweight division, and voiced his confidence that the former champion has the potential to deliver the toughest test Chimaev has ever faced in his career.

“I mean, it’s a great fight. You know, I think Rob has been somewhat overlooked in his last few fights, especially with the way he got beat by Dricus [Du Plessis],” Nicksick said. “Then he comes back the way he has. Robert Whittaker, I think, would have been a champion for a long time if it hadn’t been for Israel Adesanya. It’s like there’s always someone’s Kryptonite that comes into play… This is the matchup we need to see from both fighters to see how good Khamzat actually is. Would you be surprised if Khamzat blew through Robert Whittaker? No, you wouldn’t. Would you be surprised if Whittaker blew through Khamzat? No, you wouldn’t. So this is just one of those fights where you really want to see how good Khamzat truly is.”

Nicksick further noted that Chimaev has yet to face the rigorous test of a five-round bout. He highlighted that “Borz” struggled to maintain his intense pressure in previous fights against Usman and Gilbert Burns, suggesting that his cardio issues could be detrimental in a prolonged contest.

“I think the pace; I think somebody that can drag it into deep waters that we saw with Usman, that we saw in a three-rounder with Gilbert Burns, right? In a five-rounder, it’s always going to be the question mark because of Khamzat’s style of always trying to finish fights and get guys out of there right away. Can that be his Kryptonite? Is a guy who’s durable, who can last, get through rounds one and two, and then where does Khamzat fare in the deeper rounds? That is the question mark. We haven’t seen the unknown—that’s all we’re asking, and how well he does in these situations.”

In an interview with MMA Junkie Radio, Gilbert Burns explained his plan. He said:

“Let me just get back to the win column, you know. Gotta get a finish over Magny and [then] we’re going to talk about it. But yeah, I think it’s about time … I think the rematch against Khamzat it’s going to happen after the fight. Belal Muhammad is going to happen.”

Burns also discussed some of the other welterweight contemporaries, he continued:

“Colby [Covington], he’s the only one that’s [a] maybe. I don’t know what Colby’s doing. [Jorge] Masvidal [I’m] not really chasing that fight. He’s an opportunity for a big fight but I’m not chasing it.”

‘Durinho’ explained his plan; first, he defeats Magny, followed by Muhammad or Chimaev, and lastly a title shot.
