MMA Promoters Diego Hernandez and Craig Silva Missing for Two Weeks After Organizing Event in Mexico

Kidnapping is one of Mexico’s most lucrative shadow-industries, with a startling 72 cases per day estimated by one 2012 study. So when a pair of foreigners with money mysteriously disappear, it’s hard not to assume the worst.

On May 8th, a Canadian martial arts instructor named Diego Hernandez — who had relocated to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, two years ago — vanished along with his business partner, an American named Craig Silva. The two men had just promoted an MMA event in Puerta Vallarta, and were last spotted in Silva’s black 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, which has since been recovered by Mexican authorities. Hernandez’s mother now suspects that a kidnapping took place, and that somebody close to the men might have been involved. The Huffington Post passes along more details:

Reached in Puerto Vallarta, Hernandez’s mother, Melissa Canez, said her son and Silva had been planning to withdraw money from Silva’s account to pay for some of the event’s expenses. Soon after they obtained the money, they dropped off Silva’s girlfriend at a local university and intended to pick her up after class, she said.

Canez said she suspected the two men were kidnapped when she was told the next day that they did not return to pick up Silva’s girlfriend…

“As soon as she said they hadn’t come back and they didn’t answer their phones, for me, I knew somebody had my son against his will because he would not do that. He wouldn’t just take off.”

The online newspaper Noticias PV says Puerto Vallarta’s director of public safety, Silvestre Chavez, didn’t learn of the men’s disappearance until five days later and has launched an investigation.

Canez said her son’s girlfriend filed a missing persons report within 48 hours.

Hernandez’s girlfriend also received a call from someone who claimed he saw the two men being arrested by municipal police on the same day they went missing, Canez said…

Since the missing reports have been filed, the local authorities and the Canadian consular have been of little help, Canez said.

She said she has seen surveillance footage of an unknown man withdrawing money at a bank using Silva’s card.

There is also apparently another surveillance video that shows Hernandez withdrawing cash at an ATM while being flanked by two masked people, she said. One of the men’s bank card was also used at a convenience store, she added…

The mixed martial arts event that [Hernandez] put on earlier this month was in collaboration with another business partner who was mostly in charge of the finances.

According to Canez, Hernandez was approached a few days before the event by somebody who wanted a percentage of the earnings. Her son refused, Canez said.

“I was terrified,” she said. “I said to him, ‘You can’t say no to those people…I think you should leave, like get on the plane right now.’”

Canez said the event was extravagant and televised, and Hernandez and his business partner were having trouble paying some of the expenses.

As a result, Silva, whom Hernandez has known for over a year, became a partner as well and offered to put up what Canez said was a substantial amount of money to cover the outstanding expenses.

All of those events have led Canez to suspect that someone close to Hernandez and Silva has something to do with their disappearance.

“I think that somebody tipped these people off that Diego and Craig were going to have a substantial amount of cash on them that day, I think they were followed,” she said.

“They know Diego doesn’t have money, and his family doesn’t have money…but in Craig’s case, those people who were close knew that he had some financial backing because how could he just come up with that money to invest overnight and become part of this whole thing?”

Canez said she hasn’t received any ransom calls, but she is not sure whether the same can be said of Silva’s family. She said she has been in touch with them, but they prefer to keep their distance.

“We want Diego and Craig home alive and we are not looking for anyone to be brought to justice, nor will we do any further investigating,” Canez said. “We just want them to be given back to us safe and sound.”

Puerto Vallarta police said no information would be given on the case at this time.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada confirmed that consular officials are providing services to the family of a Canadian citizen reported missing in Mexico, and that they are in contact with local authorities.

A Facebook group has been set up to collect tips about the men’s whereabouts. Word of the case has also spread through social media, with many sharing photos of the men on Twitter.

Hernandez and Silva’s story should serve as a warning to other MMA promoters trying to make a buck south of the border; let’s hope it has a happy ending.

Man On the Lam from Kidnapping and Domestic Abuse Charges in Colarado Was Hiding in New Mexico Training at Jackson’s MMA

Coaches and fighters from Jackson’s MMA say they were stunned last week to find out that an up-and-coming amateur fighter who had been training at the gym in Albuquerque since last summer was a wanted man who was on the run from kidnapping and domestic abuse charges in Colarado.

According to the complaint filed last July, Tyron Wright allegedly kidnapped an ex-girlfriend who he handcuffed and tortured. Besides assaulting her, White is also accused of heating up a knife on his stove and burning the victim with it.

A Ring of Fire vet, Wright trained at Grudge Training Center in Colorado for several years alongside big names like Shane Carwin, Brendan Schaub and Nate Marquardt and was likely put in touch with Jackson’s by Trevor Whitman. It’s interesting that investigators took so long to find him since someone at Grudge likely would have known he was there and probably would have filled the cops in if they had bothered to visit the gym.

Wright will be extradited back to Colorado to face felony charges of  aggravated assault, willful assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.

*UPDATED* Joe Son Being Investigated for Cellmate’s Homicide in Wasco Prison Monday

By Mike Russell

(It looks like we may be able to add “murderer” to Joe Son’s resume below “kidnapper” and above “rapist.”)

A poster on mixedmartialarts.com’s Underground Forum revealed today that former UFC fighter and incarcerated kidnapper and rapist Joseph Hyungmin Son may have been involved in the murder of his cellmate in the California prison he currently is housed in and it appears that the story has some truth to it.

Here’s what the poster, SoCal PriznGard posted today:

“I am the first to break this news! Ex UFC fighter, Joe Son has murdered his cellmate. While serving a life sentence for gang rape, Joe Son has been attacked several times by other inmates who do not tolerate rapists in prison. It has not yet been determined why he killed his cellmate or how.

No troll. Fact: celly found dead. Joe and dead guy only ones in cell together. Guard doing count, sees celly is unresponsive, medical arrives. CPR performed. Celly has trauma to chest area. Pronounced dead. Innocent until proven guilty but looks like he did it. These are the only facts that I have right now. Investigation still in progress since it just happened on Monday around 5:00 pm.”

CagePotato.com spoke with a representative from the prison’s litigation department, after being passed on by Wasco’s public information officer this morning, and when asked whether or not Son was involved in said incident, we were told that a press release on the situation is forthcoming, likely later today — meaning that there is at least some truth to the rumor.

Here’s what we were told a few minutes ago:

“Right now I am working on a press release and I can’t get that information out until our headquarters puts a rubber stamp on it, so that’s where I’m at right now with it. That’s pretty much all I can tell you right now. They control when it’s released, but it may be released this afternoon, possibly.”

If there was no incident and Son was not involved, we would have been informed as much.

We’ll have more on the incident after we receive the press release this afternoon.

*UPDATE* THE FOLLOWING IS A PRESS RELEASE SENT OUT BY THE WASCO LITIGATION DEPARTMENT:

WASCO – Officials from Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide. The inmate, whose name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, was found dead in his cell about 5:50 p.m. October 10, 2011.

The 50-year-old inmate was received at WSP-RC from San Luis Obispo County on June 23, 2011, as a parole violator with a new term for failure to register as a sex offender. He received a 2-year sentence.

Joseph Son, 40, has been identified as a suspect in the case. Son was received at WSP-RC from Orange County on September 16, 2011, on a life sentence with the possibility of parole for torture.

The Office of the Inspector General’s Bureau of Independent Review was notified.

WSP-RC’s primary mission is to provide short-term housing while new inmates are processed to classify and evaluate new inmates, physically and mentally, and to determine their security level, program requirements and appropriate institutional placement. WSP-RC, which was opened in February 1991, houses approximately 5,800 inmates and employs approximately 1,700 people.

Justice is Served: Despicable Excuse For a Human Being Joe Son Gets Life in Prison

(That asshole better get used to wearing outfits like this in jail.)

By the time Joe Son fought at UFC 4 and subsequently had his balls minced by Keith Hackney, he figured he had gotten away with a vicious armed kidnapping and rape he committed with a buddy four years prior. Three years later he was cast as Random Task in the Mike Myers hit Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and probably thought his crime would never be solved. Eleven years later, the cold case thawed when the Korean-born sub-par fighter, actor and human being was arrested for an unrelated parole violation and a DNA submission was linked to the Christmas eve 1990 assault on a then-19-year-old woman whose life would never be the same after Son and his co-accused plucked her from the street in Orange County and drove around for a few hours taking time raping and sodomizing her while terrorizing and penetrating her with a handgun.

The pair made their victim believe that she was going to die, no matter if she cooperated with their demands or not before releasing her with the caveat that her life was “her Christmas present from them.” How thoughtful.

Well, that fat bastard won’t get to breathe the air of a free man for at least 16 years, but it’s more likely that he’ll spend more behind bars, especially if prosecutors and his victim have any say in the matter, and they will. He was sentenced to life in prison this afternoon with the possibility of parole.

Well, that fat bastard won’t get to breathe the air of a free man for at least 16 years, but it’s more likely that he’ll spend more behind bars, especially if prosecutors and his victim have any say in the matter, and they will. According to the LA Times, he was sentenced to life in prison this afternoon with the possibility of parole.

His victim, who is now 40 and told the court Friday that she suffers from daily bouts of post traumatic stress disorder, flew in for the month-long court proceedings to ensure that she got the opportunity to explain the effect Son’s actions have had on her life. She will have the opportunity to speak at each of Son’s parole hearings and she likely will.

“I feel debilitating fear come over me and am convinced a hand is coming from behind again,” the victim said in court. “My emotional scars are intense. My 20s were stripped from my life as I relearned how to walk, see, hear and cope with the outside world again. Joseph Son not only cost me my job at my salon [that I had at the time of the attack] but also my college savings … not to mention the impact it’s made on celebrating Christmas year after year.”

Son’s original charges of rape, torture and kidnapping were dropped after a statute of limitations expired prior to trial, but the Orange County District Attorney’s office levied charges of conspiracy to commit murder and torture in their place. The defense was able to convince jurors that because both assailants attmpted to conceal their identities by covering their faces and using aliases during the attack, that they didn’t plan to murder their victim. The torture charge, however, stuck.

Hopefully an old school UFC fan in Son’s block who knows the story recognizes him and lets the rest of the inmates know who this sick motherfucker is so they can Hackney him in the nuts every day.
