UFC heavyweight Andrei Arlovski goes Spartan on UFC flyweight John Dodson, as he front kicks the 125-pound fighter through the air…

UFC heavyweight Andrei Arlovski is a pretty entertaining guy. Not only does he provide some classic fights and finishes in the UFC octagon, but he likes to get up to some pretty funny antics in his spare time. The open workout for his UFC 195 fight with Stipe Miocic was like a comedy sketch, as he allowed UFC flyweight and Jackson’s MMA team mate John Dodson to beat up on him in front of the crowds of fans.

His recent loss to Stipe Miocic cost Arlovski his long awaited title shot in his resurgent run, and now Miocic gets drafted in to face Fabricio Werdum at UFC 196. Perhaps it’s not over for ‘The Pitbull,’ but the former heavyweight champion certainly needs to switch things up after getting finished in less than one minute.

andrei-arlovski-2013[1]There’s always his acting career to pursue if Arlovski does decide to hang the gloves up in the near future, and his comical videos lately show a much lighter side to the dangerous Belarusian striker. One such clip shows ‘The Pitbull’ imitating the notorious front kick scene from the movie ‘300.’

With the UFC heavyweight division looking just as messy as it did circa 2011, what’s next for Andrei Arlovski? Perhaps a mid level fight against a gatekeeper would prove as a good litmus test at this stage in his storied career.

His last big win was a fight of the year candidate with Travis Browne at UFC 187, and also his riveting knockout against Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva in Brazil. There’s certainly fight left in the old dog, but the question is how much?

Melvin Guillard’s 2010 Assault Charges Might Have Something to Do With Team Jackson Rejecting His Return

(Sorry Melvin, you know the rules — every time you screw up, we post this picture of you. / Photo via CombatLifestyle)

As we mentioned yesterday, Melvin Guillard‘s announcement that he was leaving the Blackzilians for his old home at Jackson’s MMA was quickly shut down by the Albuquerque-based team, who apparently doesn’t want him back. According to MMAJunkie, it wasn’t only due to Guillard’s lack of loyalty in changing camps — a pair of 2010 assault charges could have also been a factor. Here’s the story:

Two months before UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard announced via Twitter that he was returning to Team Jackson-Winkeljohn in Albuquerque, N.M., the gym’s leaders voted to keep him from doing so. Guillard had inquired about a potential reunion through former teammates, who then passed word to the gym’s administration. The vote was unanimous.

“The Young Assassin” had angered the team in interviews he gave about a move this past year to Florida’s “Blackzilians” team, a source close to the MMA team told MMAjunkie.com. Adding to concerns, Guillard has two outstanding assault charges against him from separate incidents in Albuquerque in 2010…

According to Bernalillo County (N.M.) court records, Guillard currently faces five charges: two misdemeanor counts of aggravated battery, to which he pled not guilty. Three misdemeanor counts of failure to appear in court were settled. A jury trial on the assault charges is set for April 10, where he faces six months in jail for each count, in addition to fines and probation.

Team Jackson was reportedly caught off guard when Guillard tweeted the news that he was returning. “He’s not allowed back here,” said MMAJunkie’s anonymous source.

Though details on the assault charges are scarce, it’s not the first time that Guillard has been in the news for bad behavior. Following his submission loss to Joe Stevenson in April 2007, Guillard’s pre-fight urine sample tested positive for cocaine, and he was suspended from competition for eight months. Four months later, Guillard was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, and was subsequently jailed for probation violation.

Guillard has gone 1-4 over his last five fights, most recently losing a split-decision against Jamie Varner at UFC 155. We’ll update you when Guillard answers his assault charges in court next month.

Man On the Lam from Kidnapping and Domestic Abuse Charges in Colarado Was Hiding in New Mexico Training at Jackson’s MMA

Coaches and fighters from Jackson’s MMA say they were stunned last week to find out that an up-and-coming amateur fighter who had been training at the gym in Albuquerque since last summer was a wanted man who was on the run from kidnapping and domestic abuse charges in Colarado.

According to the complaint filed last July, Tyron Wright allegedly kidnapped an ex-girlfriend who he handcuffed and tortured. Besides assaulting her, White is also accused of heating up a knife on his stove and burning the victim with it.

A Ring of Fire vet, Wright trained at Grudge Training Center in Colorado for several years alongside big names like Shane Carwin, Brendan Schaub and Nate Marquardt and was likely put in touch with Jackson’s by Trevor Whitman. It’s interesting that investigators took so long to find him since someone at Grudge likely would have known he was there and probably would have filled the cops in if they had bothered to visit the gym.

Wright will be extradited back to Colorado to face felony charges of  aggravated assault, willful assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.

Confident and Motivated, Condit Okay With Familiar Underdog Status

By Mike Russell

If you didn’t know any better, you would assume by looking at the odds for Saturday night’s UFC 143 main event interim welterweight title fight between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit that betting on Diaz would earn you some easy money.

Fortunately this isn’t pro-wrestling and bout outcomes aren’t pre-determined, because Condit hasn’t followed the scripts written for him by the bookies for most of his fights and he doesn’t plan on starting at this point of his career.

“I’m probably the underdog as far as the betting lines go, but that’s where I’ve been my whole career,” he explains with a shrug. “I’m excited for this fight. I know I have all of the tools to come out on top. I’m motivated and am in shape. I’ve been training since July for this fight. I had some cancellations and some change-ups, but I stayed focus on making sure I’m ready.”

Spending the better part of seven months in the gym has ensured that Carlos remained focused and didn’t become complacent in training, even through the holidays. Although he says that he didn’t have an issue sticking to his diet and keeping his nose through the grindstone through December, he worried at the time that he would be the only one in the gym.

“It wasn’t so much about me staying motivated. It’s that a lot of the guys at the gym were back home,” he explains. “We have a lot of guys at Jackson’s who come in from other places and they went home for Christmas, so my main concern was having enough training partners for the holidays, but I did. They came through for me and so did my coaches and I’m so grateful to them for that.”

In spite of having to make some sacrifices, Condit made sure to make the time for his family the past few months. The former WEC welterweight champ explains that now that he has a son, his outlook on fighting has changed.

“[Having a baby] is a huge motivating factor. I take [fighting and training] a lot more seriously now and I realize how fortunate I am to be able to fight for a living and to be able to make a good living doing what I love,” Condit says earnestly. “I also am able to spend a lot of time with my son, which I probably wouldn’t be able to do if I was punching a clock, working a nine to five.”

Although he says he isn’t looking past Diaz as far as his fighting career goes, “The Natural Born Killer” points out that he is making moves to ensure that he has alternate forms of income when he walks out of the cage for the last time.

“I worked a bit on a movie they filmed out in Albuquerque. Other than that I have a couple business ventures I’m working on,” he says. “I’m a partner in a small clothing store and I have a few other lines in the water. I plan on leveraging my success as a fighter to continue to be successful when I’m done fighting.”

Current fighters take note.

Greg Jackson too Safe? Well, He Does Wear Rubber Gloves…

Dana White recently targeted beloved coach, Greg Jackson of Jackson’s MMA as a contributor to boring fights in the UFC. Though Jackson holds prestige as the trainer to names like Georges St. Pierre, Jon “Bones” Jones, Rashad Evans, Clay Guida and Carlos Condit to name a few, White believes that Jackson’s lead-with-caution approach is hindering the excitement that the fighters should be bringing into the octagon that helps the viewers feel their $49.95 pay-per-view was money well spent. White had a mouthful to say in regard to Greg Jackson’s training methods including that he has respect for Jackson yet his game plans and corner work are “weird”. White summed up his thoughts by saying:

You’ll see guys who are traditionally exciting fighters, but when they go to the Greg Jackson camp they become safety first fighters. Why wouldn’t you tell him ‘go for broke in this third round? This is a close fight.

Greg Jackson had an opportunity to fire back to White’s criticisms earlier today via a phone interview with MMAFighting’s Ben Fowlkes:

Here’s a quick stat for you. So there’s been 22 [UFC events] this year? We had 12 bonuses so far this year, so one out of every two, one of my fighters got Submission of the Night, Knockout of the Night, or Fight of the Night.

Jackson went on to list that Jon Jones had finished every single fight under the Jackson training camp save for a Disqualification against Matt Hamill for an illegal elbow. He also mention’s Carlos Condit’s recent Knockout of the Night and Fight of the Night honors with his victory over Dan Hardy at UFC 120.

The comments made by White were after a disappointing performance by Nate Marquardt who lost via Unanimous Decision to Yushin Okami earlier this month at UFC 122. White felt Marquardt had ample opportunity to try and finish Okami in the 3rd round but didn’t feel his corner was urging Marquardt to go for it.

Despite criticism, Greg Jackson remains a favorite MMA coach and is up for Coach of the Year at the 2010 World MMA Awards this Wednesday night. Jackson took top honors last year, so it doesn’t look like you, the fans would have agreed with White in 2009. We’ll see if you’ve had a change of heart this year.

Either hell has frozen over or Diego Sanchez has finally realized that all of the stevia and "yes" cartwheels in the world aren’t going to replace top-tier trainers and training partners.

"The Nightmare" has apparently rejoined his  teammates at  Jackson’s MMA after a nearly three year absence from the gym he began training at as a teenager.

Here’s the announcement he tweeted this morning:
