Devastating Knee to the Face Drops Fighter in Explosive GLORY Kickboxing Clash

Even with the lack of MMA during the holiday season, there was no shortage of bloody brawls and brutal knockouts at GLORY Kickboxing’s latest event.

G97 x RISE Grand Prix 1600x900 1

On December 21, Glory’s RISE World Series 2024 Final delivered a slew of highlight-reel finishes, perhaps none bigger than the one that Yutaro Asahi scored against Jan Kaffa in their reserve bout for the featherweight grand prix tournament.

At the 1:15 mark of the third round, Asahi caught Kaffa with a horrifying flying knee that sent the Dutchman crashing to the canvas. Somehow, Kaffa climbed back to his feet and kept throwing his hands until getting hit with another knee that put him on the mat for a second and final time.

While the finish did come with a hint of controversy, both fighters let their fists fly for nearly three full rounds before the dueling knees brought an end to the action.

As exciting as Asahi vs. Kaffa was, they were shown up just a few fights later when Sung Hyun Lee and Berjan Peposhi delivered a beautiful back-and-forth brawl that saw both fighters eat the canvas in the second stanza.

Lee went on to win the bout via majority decision but lost to eventual grand prix tournament winner Petchpanomrung Kiatmoo9 in the semifinals.

Miguel Trindade Shines at GLORY Kickboxing’s final card of 2024

Though he didn’t go on to win the tournament, Portugal’s Miguel Trindade delivered a pair of knockouts in the quarter and semifinal rounds that made him the MVP of the event.

Trindade got his night started with a brutal knockout of Kento Haraguchi after catching his opponent with a massive overhand right with one second left in the opening round.

He followed that up with a 62-second KO against Chadd Collins with a brutal knee against the ropes.

We have seen some great knockouts in the combat sports world this year now that we’re more than halfway through 2024. But while many will look at the Max Holloway last-second throwdown KO of Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 as their favorite, kickboxer Taimu Hisai gave that nomination a run for its money.

Hisai provided fight fans with a major finish in his Muay Thai bout with Chuut Seryvanthong at Knock Out 2024 Vol. 3.

With less than 10 seconds to go in the opening round of their fight, Hisai countered a Seryvanthong right hand by throwing his body in a spinning motion and landing his left heel right on the button, completing a rare rolling thunder knockout.

Video - MMA fighter falls face first into cage, accidentally knocks herself out

We’ve seen a lot of crazy knockouts in the world of MMA, but we’ve never seen the actual cage KO someone. That’s exactly what happened during a combat sports event on Saturday, April 6.

DrobenaRegina

During a mixed martial arts bout between Lucie Drobenka Kotlarova and Regina Labajova in the Czech Republic, Kotlarova came lumbering out of her corner without her hands up and briefly circled her opponent before lunging forward in an attempt to grab her. It was then that Kotlarova lost her footing and fell forward, smashing her face into the cage and instantly knocking herself. The bout was immediately stopped and Labajova was declared the winner.

Despite never once making contact with her opponent, Labajova will be credited with a knockout.

Welterweight Marcus Edwards needed less than 30 seconds to get the win in his main event bout at Combate Global.

Matched up with Leonardo Rodriguez, the American took the center of the cage early and kept Rodriguez against the fence as he switched between stances. The first real exchange of the fight turned out to be the beginning of the end.

“Bad Intentions” blitzed forward with a combination that crumbled his Mexican opponent and had the ref sprinting in to stop the fight.

This was Edwards’ first victory since 2017. The 33-year-old debuted in 2012 against Justin Gaethje and competed for promotions such as LFA and Titan FC before a 4-year layoff.

Edwards made his return to action in 2021 and challenged for Titan FC’s welterweight belt, but lost a split decision to champion Dilano Taylor. This was Edwards’ first fight for Combate Global, and the win improved his record to 14-6 overall.

The first bout of the UFC’s series of Road to UFC cards opened with a massive upset by light heavyweight Zhang Mingyang.

Competing in the very first bout of Road to UFC 1, Zhang faced heavily favored Fury FC light heavyweight champion George Tokkos. Zhang was listed as nearly a 5-1 underdog in some places, but the Chinese fighter clearly didn’t bother checking the odds before the fight.

After the two men slugged it out for the first 4 minutes of the bout, Zhang landed a huge right hand that floored Tokkos. The 23-year-old followed up with punches until the ref stepped in, but the fight was likely over the moment Zhang landed that first right hand.

This was Zhang’s ninth win in a row, and he improved his pro record to 16-6 overall. His was only the first of a number of highlight-reel finishes from this series of cards leading up to UFC 275.

What’s your reaction to this upset victory from Zhang Mingyang at Road to the UFC 1?
