Anthony Pettis‘s divisional line-cutting has apparently angered the vengeful MMA Gods, who have struck down the crowd-pleasing striker with a knee injury. UFC president Dana White just confirmed the bad news, saying that Pettis is officially out of his scheduled featherweight title fight against Jose Aldo, which was slated to go down at UFC 163, August 3rd at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Pettis described the injury as a “small tear in my meniscus,” but didn’t give a specific timetable on his return.
So that’s the bad news. The good news is, Pettis has already been replaced by a title-challenger who’s actually earned a crack at the 145-pound belt: Chan Sung Jung, better known to us Westerners as “The Korean Zombie.” Jung was originally scheduled to face Ricardo Lamas in a likely #1 contender bout at UFC 162 next month, but has now been fast-tracked to a title fight in order to rescue the UFC 163 main event.
“TKZ” is 3-0 in the UFC, with incredible stoppage victories against Leonard Garcia (via twister submission), Mark Hominick (via seven-second KO), and Dustin Poirier (via d’arce choke, in a Fight of the Year candidate last May).

2-0 in his past two outings, Jung jumped to the front of the featherweight contenders line-up with his dazzling seven-second KO of Mark Hominick at UFC 140 in December. In his other fight last year, he pulled off the ever-elusive Twister submission in March at UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis, earning him “Submission of the Night” and “Submission of the Year” nods from the UFC.
Poirier is no slouch himself.
Since upsetting former 145-pound contender Josh Grispi in his UFC Octagon and featherweight debut at UFC 125, “Diamond” has rattled off four straight victories, including an impressive d’arce choke and mounted triangle armbar in his last two outings against Pablo Garza at UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos and Max Holloway last weekend at UFC 143. He earned Submission of the Night honors for his most recent win.
The card will also feature the retrun of light heavyweight Thiago Silva, who recently finished serving a one-year suspension for submitting artificial urine for his post-UFC 125 win over Brandon Vera in January 2011. Vera was originally slated to rematch the Brazilian, but was forced to pull out of bout due to injury. Igor Pokrajac has since stepped in to replace “The Truth.’
The only other announce bout thus far is a middleweight scrap between Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald and “Filthy” Tom Lawlor.

On closer inspection it seems that neither fighter really holds the record as it really belongs to Ludwig, whose 2006 knockout over Jonathan Goulet at UFN 3 was previously in the books at :11.

As White points out, from the time Mario Yamasaki claps his hands to start the bout to when he touches “Bang” to indicate the fight is over is 6.06 seconds. Duffee’s actual finishing time was 7.56 seconds and “The Korean Zombie’s” was 6.26 seconds.
Translation: The top three fastest KOs in UFC history were Ludwig over Goulet (6.06 seconds), Jung over Hominick (6.26 seconds) and Duffee over Hague (7.56 seconds).
Unfortunately, the Nevada State Athletic Commission doesn’t believe that its employee made a mistake and as such it is refusing to accept the record change, even if the UFC has.
“The ruling is that it stays at 11. There’s no legal avenue to overturn it. I timed it myself with a stopwatch. It was eight seconds. Officially, it’s got to stay at 11 seconds, but unofficially, it could be at eight,” NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer told MMAjunkie on Monday. “If you use a stopwatch, from the time the fight starts to the time that Mario grabs Duane, it’s about 7.9 seconds. Why the official timekeeper had it at 11, I don’t know. But it wasn’t 11, and it wasn’t four, either.”
Although the World Boxing Council’s records list Duffee as the holder as the fastest KO in UFC history and Jung as the only person to tie the feat, Zuffa isn’t recognizing their erroneous records.
“They can say whatever they want,” Kizer said. “Sounds like they want to be the WBC for some reason.”

We caught up with consummate crowd favorite Sam Stout over the weekend at the MMA Expo in Toronto and we touched on a number of topics, including how the healing process is going for him and his Team Tompkins teammates since losing friend and mentor Shawn Tompkins. We also spoke about how the team is rallying behind Mark Hominick this weekend as “The Machine” gets set to take to the Octagon for the first time in his career without “The Coach” in his corner Saturday night when he takes on “The Korean Zombie.”
Stout is candid about the affect Tompkins’ death had on him and he reveals the team’s plans moving forward. Definitely a must-watch interview.
