UFC bantamweight Kris Moutinho wants to prove he’s not just a moving target ahead of his second bout in the UFC, as he gets ready to face Aaron Phillips at a UFC Fight Night card set for Oct. 23 in Las Vegas.

Moutinho took a short-notice fight for his first taste of UFC competition, ultimately losing to fan-favorite Sean O’Malley at UFC 264 this summer. Despite getting beat-up against O’Malley, Moutinho held his own and showcased incredible toughness under a barrage of pressure in his UFC debut.

Moutinho gets another chance to prove he’s not just a human punching bag against Phillips and put his stamp on the UFC’s stacked bantamweight division.

“I didn’t have many injuries. My toe was a little banged up, and everything else was pretty good,” Moutinho said during a recent interview with MMA Junkie. “I’m not just a punching bag. I gotta get these wins and show everybody I’m worth more than just what they saw in the last fight.

Moutinho arguably got more attention and respect from the fans following his TKO loss to O’Malley. Many around the MMA community, including UFC commentator and former heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, gave Moutinho props for his performance. Despite suffering a significant amount of damage in the fight, Moutinho protested with referee Herb Dean for stopping the bout with just 27 seconds left.

Moutinho earned the opportunity to fight in the UFC after a bit of an up-and-down tenure fighting in Cage Fury and CES, with a 9-4 record entering the O’Malley bout. He’s always been known as a volume striker who usually puts on strong performances in the cage, but faced easily his toughest test against O’Malley.

Moutinho will have the chance to prove that he’s here to stay in the UFC when he faces Phillips next month.

Sean O’Malley is ready to return to the octagon and already has a date in mind.

O’Malley has won back-to-back fights after suffering his first career loss at the hands of Marlon Vera. Most recently, he picked apart late replacement Kris Moutinho to open the main card of UFC 264 in July.

‘Sugar’ was in Cleveland, Ohio, over the weekend to catch the Tyron Woodley-Jake Paul boxing match in person. Prior to the fight, he sat down with Helen Yee to give his thoughts on the bout as well as what he has planned next. Towards the end of the interview, O’Malley gave the timeline for when fans can expect to see him compete next.

“December 11 is the plan,” O’Malley said. “My hand is still very sore, very bruised. Not very bruised, I was thinking it was feeling quite a bit better, and then I punched Tim’s hand today at the seminar and it flared up on me a little bit. It hurts, still pretty sore. Hopefully December 11 will be the next one. Las Vegas, T-Mobile Arena. (Against) who? I don’t know. Doesn’t really matter.”

While he doesn’t have any particular opponent in mind, he did have words for everyone who has taken to calling him out. Particularly, he took umbrage with T.J Dillashaw and Dominick Cruz, who were both offered grappling matches against O’Malley but turned them down. Dillashaw would even go on to say that he didn’t think O’Malley would ever be a world champion because of the holes in his game.

“They’re just calling me out in the dumbest ways,” O’Malley said. “It’s just embarrassing how they’re calling me out. It’s kind of pathetic. But it shows that they’re following. But their callouts… You can’t expect much from guys that are 5’4”.”

Kris Moutinho has been booked to return in October.

Moutinho made his UFC debut at UFC 264 in July against Sean O’Malley, which is a fight Moutinho took on less than two weeks’ notice. Many expected O’Malley to run through the Massachusetts native and get an early stoppage. However, Moutinho kept on walking forward and eating the best shots of O’Malley. Despite losing by third-round TKO, which many were critical of the stoppage, Moutinho gained an insane following as many fans were impressed by his durability.

Now, according to MMAJunkie, Moutinho will make his second Octagon appearance on October 23 against Aaron Phillips. The location of the fight has not been announced but it will likely happen at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Kris Moutinho (9-5, 0-1 UFC), as mentioned, is coming off the third-round TKO loss to O’Malley. Prior to that, the 29-year-old earned a third-round submission win over Andrew Salas in CFFC after defeating Ashiek Ajim in CES. He does hold a notable win over Bellator veteran, Da’Mon Blackshear.

Aaron Phillips (12-4, 0-3 UFC), returned to the UFC on short-notice in July and suffered a submission loss to Jack Shore. It marked his second stint in the UFC as he fought for the Las Vegas-based promotion in 2014 and lost to Sam Sicilia and Matt Hobar by decision. After his release from the UFC, he lost to Chris Gutierrez in WFC by decision but after that went on a five-fight winning streak which earned his way back into the promotion.

With the addition of Kris Moutinho vs. Aaron Phillips, the Oct. 23 card is as follows:

  • Paulo Costa vs. Marvin Vettori
  • Randa Markos vs. Livinha Souza
  • Daniel Lacerda vs. Jeff Molina
  • Jessica-Rose Clark vs. Joselyne Edwards
  • Jun Yong Park vs. Gregory Rodrigues
  • Mason Jones vs. Alan Patrick
  • Kris Moutinho vs. Aaron Phillips
