When Lando Vannata stepped in as a late replacement to fight Tony Ferguson, nobody gave him a shot. “Groovy” gave “El Cucuy” all he could handle. Vannata dropped Ferguson and almost finished him in the first round. He ended up getting submitted in the second round, but “Groovy’s” performance was eye-opening.

Vannata was given John Makdessi as his second opponent inside the Octagon. He had what many consider to be the “Knockout of the Year” in 2016. He knocked his opponent out cold with a wheel kick in the first round. Vannata spoke to Flo Combat and told them he was happy to get his first UFC victory:

“Getting my first win meant a lot to me, but one thing it meant was that I silenced all the doubters. After coming in against Tony [Ferguson] on two weeks’ notice and putting it to him like I did, one of the biggest things for me was going out there and showing the world what I’m really capable of, and yeah, it turned out to be a really good night.”

The next stop for Vannata is UFC 209. His opponent will be David Teymur. “Groovy” feels he will walk out of the T-Mobile Arena with his 10th career win.

“I told them I wanted to fight on March 4, UFC 209, and I gave them a list of opponents. They said they would see what they could do, and I got the fight. It’s a secret who else was on the list, but Teymur was on it. I think I’ll definitely beat this guy. He’s a good striker, but I think he’s overconfident in his striking.”

Vannata is currently unranked, but that could change very soon. As he works his way up the 155-pound division, “Groovy” has one fight he’d love to get back.

“F**k yeah (in regards to a rematch with Ferguson). That’s one that, err, I try not to hold onto anything or keep that brick in my pocket, but yeah, it’s one I want to get back in the future. I’m going to keep climbing up the rankings, and in time, me and Tony are going to meet again and it’s going to make for a good story–I can’t f**king wait for the day.”

UFC 206 went down from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada tonight (Saturday, December 10, 2016). Fans were treated to a truly unforgettable night of action.

To no one’s surprise, Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi were awarded matching $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for their legendary encounter on the pay-per-view main card. While it was officially made Fight of the Night at the post-fight press conference, many are predicting that it stole Fight of the Year honors as well. The two power-punching featherweights bludgeoned each other over fifteen minutes of increasingly dramatic and draw-dropping action. Both men would be rocked during the battle, but both refused to back down, refused to go away. Swanson did just a bit more down the stretch to capture a unanimous verdict from the judges, but the young ‘Korean Superboy’ figures to raise his stock significantly, even in defeat.

Elsewhere in main card action, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone captured one of two Performance of the Night bonuses for his climactic head kick finish of nemesis Matt Brown in the co-headliner. The two welterweights engaged in their own blood-and-guts battle in which each man hit the deck during the first ten minutes. On another night, Cerrone and Brown may have taken home Fight of the Night honors. Cerrone sealed the victory – and his own bonus check – with crushing walk-off head kick knockout a minute into round three. Cerrone has finished four straight opponents since moving up the scales to the welterweight division.

Finally, Lando Vannata banked his own $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus check in the Fight Pass featured prelim. The Jackson-Wink product performed the night’s first walk-off head kick knockout, but this was of the spinning wheel kick variety. His heel met John Makdessi’s chin and separated him from consciousness in the first round of their lightweight tussle. It was the second resounding performance for Vannata in two UFC appearances.

During the first round of the contest Vannata unleashed a massive spinning wheel kick to Makdessi’s chin that sent him crashing to the canvas unconscious, while Vannata walked away for the walk-off KO. The knockout showed shades of the vicious Edson Barboza knockout of Terry Etim back in 2012.

Tony Ferguson (21-3) was originally set to headline UFC Fight Night 91 with Michael Chiesa. With Chiesa injured, “El Cucuy” settled for a co-main event spot against Lando Vannata (8-1).

Ferguson was in dire straits in the first round, but he gathered himself and finished his bout in typical fashion.

Vannata landed a couple of leg kicks. He caught a kick from Ferguson and threw a straight right hand. Time was called as Ferguson was caught low with a kick. “Groovy” ducked a spinning back elbow and briefly held on to a body lock. Vannata was popped with a jab and then a one-two combination. A push kick connected for Vannata, but he was popped with a right cross. Ferguson got rocked with a head kick and Vannata tried to follow up. “El Cucuy” went for an armbar at the end of the round, but Vannata stood in top control to end the round.

Ferguson opened the second round with a jab. “Groovy” went for a spinning wheel kick. “El Cucuy” kept finding a home for his jab. Ferguson kept popping his opponent with shots. Lannata kept his hands down to try to get his opponent to make a mistake. “El Cucuy” caught him in a standing choke. Ferguson turned it into a D’Arce choke. “Groovy” had no choice but to tap or nap. He chose to tap.

Final Result: Tony Ferguson def. Lando Vannata via Submission (D’Arce choke) – R2, 2:22
