Rising UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson may have picked up what ranks as by far his biggest win when he knocked out former champion Johny ‘Bigg Rigg’ Hendricks in the main event of last weekend’s (Sat., February 6, 2015) UFC Fight Night 82 from the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, but his paycheck didn’t necessarily reflect it.

Thompson was paid $24,000 to win and $24,000 for a total of $48,000 for the thrilling performance against Hendricks, an amount that was actually $2,000 less than the much-deserved $50,000 ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus he received afterward.

In an odd twist, UFC Fight Night 82 featured a high number of six-figure earners aside from Thompson, as five total fighters made $100,000 or more last Saturday. They were headlined by Hendricks ($100,000), Roy Nelson ($150,000), Joseph Benavidez ($118,000), Ovince St. Preux ($102,000), and longtime veteran Mike Pyle, who earned $106,000 in addition to $50,000 more for ‘Fight of the Night’ in his exciting stoppage win over Sean Spencer.

Here is the full list of disclosed UFC Fight Night 82 payouts:

Main Card (FOX Sports 1):
Stephen Thompson ($24,000 + $24,000 = $48,000) def. Johny Hendricks ($100,000)

Ovince St. Preux ($51,000 + $51,000 = $102,000) def. Rafael Cavalcante ($42,000)

Mike Pyle ($53,000 + $53,000 = $106,000) def. Sean Spencer ($17,000)

Preliminary Card (FOX Sports 1):

Heavyweights Roy Nelson and Jared Rosholt came into their fight in the co-main event of tonight’s (Sat., February 6, 2016) UFC Fight Night 82 from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at different points of their mixed martial arts (MMA) careers.

No. 11-ranked ‘Big Country’ was looking to prove he still belonged in the UFC after losing five of his last six bouts, while No. 12 Rosholt was seeking to show he deserved a spot in the Top 10.

The fight predicted to play out in Rosholt’s favor if it hit the mat, and obviously is ‘Big Country’s’ if it unfolded in the stand-up. Nelson began stalking Rosholt early, holding his trademark overhand right cocked. Not much was thrown in the opening moments, but ‘Big Country’ controlled the Octagon.

Nelson rushed forward with a combo that narrowly whiffed, but Rosholt landed two strong punches. A few seconds later, tagged Nelson with the fight’s most significant strikes after he caught him rushing in. Rosholt used a stick-and-move gameplan to avoid Nelson’s big power by staying out of his way in an uneventful first round.

In the second, Rosholt went for a takedown but missed, eating a counter left from Nelson. ‘Big Country’ landed a massive leg kick that appeared to hurt Rosholt, but Nelson didn’t take advantage. Rosholt continued to stay far from Rosholt, snapping a body kick while earning boos from the crowd. Finally, Nelson found a home for some big punches, unleashing two strong combos before a scramble resulted in the end of the second frame.

The third and final frame saw Nelson start with a second huge low kick, and he surprisingly went for a takedown that had little chance. Nelson swung wildly, landing intermittent shots and keeping his pressure of Rosholt high. Rosholt then went for a deep takedown but was stuffed, and the low-on-action bout came to an end with more wild swings from Nelson that failed to land.

It wasn’t pretty, but ultimately Nelson took home the fight by unanimous decision.

Final Result: Roy Nelson def. Jared Rosholt via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

HOUSTON — Saturday night’s UFC 136 marks the fourth event in four weeks for the Las Vegas-based promotion.

Get used to it.

The schedule continues to grow at an exponential rate, according to UFC president Dana White, who said that the organization has already penciled in dates on its 2012 calendar.

The final tally? Thirty-four events. That’s a serious increase from 2011, which will see 27 live events by the time Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem close out the UFC’s year in Las Vegas on December 30.

That increased number of shows will come as welcome news to fans in markets that have been promised events but were shut out in 2011, like Sweden and Ireland. Though no locations are yet set in stone, the increased frequency of events will at least provide additional opportunities to visit more parts of the world as the UFC continues to grow its global footprint.

White also reiterated his plan to host two events on the same day at least once next year, with their first experiment in dual productions tentatively planned for late February, with shows in Las Vegas and Japan.

In 2011, the UFC re-opened what they believe will be a huge market for them, hosting a show in Brazil to great fanfare. It was the organization’s first venture there since 1998. Afterward, UFC CEO and chairman Lorenzo Fertitta was so pleased with the reception that he voiced a hope the promotion could bring as many as four events there in 2012.

Aside from that, entering the Japanese market would be something of a coup for the UFC, which has not brought fights there under the Zuffa banner.

The expanded schedule is just one of many planned and/or official UFC initiatives and changes to roll out in 2012. Also among them, a move to network television on FOX, a departure from longtime cable home Spike, the addition of a flyweight division, and a revamping of The Ultimate Fighter to include live weekly fights.
