Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira Confirmed Scratched From UFC 170, Feb. 22nd in Las Vegas [UPDATED, WTF]

UPDATE: Uh…just kidding. MMAJunkie reports that the Jones vs. Teixeira fight will *not* take place at UFC 170, as Jones will be unavailable for an undisclosed reason. This is the second time that this shit has happened.

The previously announced light-heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and challenger Glover Teixeira will headline UFC 170, scheduled for February 22nd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The date and venue were announced on yesterday’s edition of UFC Tonight.

Jones is coming off his record-setting sixth title-defense, which came in a squeaker against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in September. The hard-slugging Teixeira is riding one of the longest win streaks in the sport — 20 straight victories, unbroken by draws or no-contests — and TKO’d Ryan Bader in September to pick up his fifth win in the UFC.

UFC 170 marks the UFC’s second pay-per-view event scheduled for February 2014, and means that three of the UFC’s nine titles will be up for grabs that month, including the bantamweight and featherweight title fights slated for UFC 169 on February 1st. And of course, the Machida vs. Mousasi fight will also take place that month in Brazil. Rest up now, fight fans.

Dana White Pulls UFC Events From Palms Casino Resort After They Cut His Gambling Credit Line in Half [TRUE STORY]

(For the girl in the Spiderman costume, what happened later that night was the most humiliating experience of her life. For Jon Lovitz, it was just another champagne orgy. Photo via VegasNews)

UFC president Dana White — who, as we are legally obligated to tell you, has never bet on a UFC fight in his life, other than that friendly $100 cash wager he made on Manny Gamburyan vs. Thiago Tavares — has cut ties with The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, a longtime host-venue of TUF Finale events. In true Godfather style, it’s over an insult, related to his immense, well-documented love of gambling (which again, he’s never done on a UFC fight, except for that one time in January 2009).

Here’s the scoop, from swashbuckling shit-stirrer Norm Clarke of the Las Vegas Review Journal:

A falling-out with UFC president Dana White is the latest setback for the hard-hit Palms, sources confirmed Sunday.

Here’s the scoop, from swashbuckling shit-stirrer Norm Clarke of the Las Vegas Review Journal:

A falling-out with UFC president Dana White is the latest setback for the hard-hit Palms, sources confirmed Sunday.

The blowup occurred about six months ago when White, furious that his credit line was cut in half, pulled all UFC-related events from the Palms and has not returned…

The UFC had an exclusive contract with the Palms to hold televised “Ultimate Fighter Live Finale” events at the hotel as well as local UFC fights.

One of the Palms’ biggest gamblers since it opened 11 years ago, White’s tipping habits were legendary.

“He changed people’s lives,” said one of the sources.

Dealers and wait staff were among the hardest hit by White’s departure. During one two-month hot streak, White tipped dealers more than $100,000, sources confirmed.

“Anytime he came in, we knew it was a big payday,” a Palms employee said.

A regular at N9NE Steakhouse, White routinely ran up dinner tabs of $15,000-$20,000 and tossed in $10,000 tips. That happened three or four or times a week, the sources said.

First, let’s give White some credit here: The fact that his tipping habits are enough to affect a city’s local economy is pretty fucking impressive. Until you’re able to spend $100,000/week on steak dinners, you can’t really call yourself a “success.”

But man, what an asshole. (Sorry, you knew that was coming.) We’re used to the UFC president’s tantrums by now, but this one — in which Dana ends a contract with a loyal partner because they were financially strapped and could no longer afford to float him the kind of markers he’d grown accustomed to — is such a great encapsulation of White’s personality. In short, he’s a man who wields his power like a bully, reacts to every setback as if it were a direct threat on his life, and loves, loves, loves to gamble, to the point where his love of gambling is now influencing major business decisions.

Anyway, this should explain why the TUF 16 Finale is slated to go down at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on December 15th, and not at the Palms, where the last eleven TUF finale cards have taken place.

Domestic Violence Charges Dropped Against Arianny Celeste

(Say, that reminds me of a joke: What’s bloodshot, greasy, and smells like cologne?)

According to a new report from MMAJunkie, the Las Vegas District Attorney’s office has decided not to file domestic violence charges against veteran UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste. “After our review of the case, we found that there was insufficient evidence to move forward,” said Tess Driver, executive assistant to Las Vegas district attorney Steve Wolfson.

After being arrested on May 26th following an altercation at the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas — and spending the entire day in jail — Celeste claimed that she was simply defending herself when her boyfriend Praveen Chandra choked her twice; Chandra denied Arianny’s version of the events, and claimed that Celeste kicked him in the nose in a limousine. But then you look at their mugshots and all you see is two tired people who should have left the club at midnight, instead of partying to the point of going “crayyyy ha hey bay bayyy.” With no visible injuries to speak of, it seems the Las Vegas authorities decided to just chalk this one up to drunk people acting stupid, or stupid people getting drunk, or both, whatever.

Requests for comment have not been answered by Chandra. Seriously, we found his e-mail address online a few weeks ago and sent him a note about this whole mess, but nothing. WE WILL NOT BE IGNORED, PRAVEEN.

First UFC Fan Expo of 2012 to Coincide With July 7th Event in Las Vegas

(“It’s an honor to meet you, man. The Hills Have Eyes is, like, my favorite movie ever.”)

According to new reports, the UFC will hold its first Fan Expo of 2012 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas on July 6-7. The expo will be held in conjunction with a major UFC event on July 7th, likely at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. As of now, no fights have been announced for the card; we’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more.

The July 2012 UFC Fan Expo will be the first held since October 2011, when the two-day convention was tied to UFC 136 in Houston. Though we couldn’t make it out to that one, CagePotato has enjoyed a checkered history with these expos, highlighted by a crowd-pleasing punch-machine, a lifetime ban, and a drunken night in Toronto. Should we plan for another meetup in Vegas?

Dong Hyun Kim will try to rebound from the first loss of his career, but he’ll have to do it against a fighter also looking for a little redemption.

Kim will face Sean Pierson in a welterweight bout at UFC 141, the promotion’s year-ending pay-per-view at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The UFC announced the fight Monday.

UFC 141 will be headlined by the promotional debut of former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, who will be immediately tested by the return of former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar.

Kim (14-1-1, 1 NC, 5-1, 1 NC UFC) was drilled by a Carlos Condit flying knee at UFC 132 in July, then finished with punches on the ground for the first loss of his career – technically. At UFC 94, Kim lost a split decision to Karo Parisyan, but that loss was overturned to a no contest when Parisyan’s drug test came back positive for banned substances.

Prior to his loss to Condit, who went on to get a top contenders fight with BJ Penn that turned into a title fight against Georges St-Pierre at the end of this month after UFC president Dana White pulled Nick Diaz from the fight, Kim had won three straight with decision wins over TJ Grant, Amir Sadollah and Nate Diaz.

Pierson (11-5, 1-1 UFC) was riding a six-fight winning streak going into a bout with Jake Ellenberger at UFC 129 in Toronto. But the Toronto native was stopped just over halfway through the first round by Ellenberger, who went on to fight with Jake Shields last month that he won with a devastating 53-second TKO.

UFC 141 will be Pierson’s first fight on American soil since the third fight of his career – more than 11 years ago. The other 15 fights in his pro career have come in his native Canada.

Aside from the heavyweight contenders bout between Overeem and Lesnar, UFC 141 is also expected to include a light heavyweight bout between Alexander Gustafsson and Vladimir Matyushenko and a welterweight bout between Jon Fitch and Johny Hendricks.

Mike Whitehead’s Sex Assault Case Headed to Trial in August

(“Did I mention I bought Jimmy Dean sausages and I let her use my Star Wars pillow?”)

In spite of earlier reports that Mike Whitehead had reached a plea bargain deal with prosecutors in his felony sexual assault case, it looks like the former UFC fighter will now go to trial in an attempt to refute and disprove the allegations against him.

According to court records, Whitehead’s preliminary hearing will commence on August 19 at 9:00 am in Clark County district court in Las Vegas, NV. The case will be heard by Justice Janiece Marshall.

The preliminary hearing was originally set for last September, but because of delays and an apparent plea deal that either fell through or Whitehead decided not to take, there was a nearly one-year delay in bringing the case to trial.

The two female plaintiffs in the case, who were acquaintances of Whitehead’s contend that following a barbecue at his residence, the TUF alumnus invited the pair who were intoxicated to spend the night at his house in Las Vegas. According to the police report, the two went to sleep in Whitehead’s bed and he told them he would be sleeping on the sofa. One of the victims allegedly awoke to Whitehead having sex with her. After several minutes of telling him to stop, he proceeded to get up, dress and sit in the corner in a chair and stare at the two of them for an unspecified amount of time before leaving the room. The second victim claims that she awoke during the alleged rape to Whitehead fondling her breasts, but she didn’t say or do anything for fear of retaliation by the fighter.

Whitehead and several of his friends in the MMA community, including a handful of fighters he trains with at Xtreme Couture in LV contend that the facts in the case don’t add up and that the accusers are looking to frame Whitehead for monetary gain.

An interesting fact that has mysteriously been swept under the rug is that initial reports stated that when police attended Whitehead’s home to arrest him, they discovered a small marijuana grow operation. No drug charges were ever laid.
