Former UFC bantamweight champion, Miesha Tate has posted a picture of her progress en route to her upcoming flyweight division bow at UFC 276 in July – with the former gold holder slated to land in the weight class against one-time title challenger, Lauren Murphy.

Miesha Tate, a career bantamweight, apart from a sole featherweight outing in her third professional fight, recently suffered her first defeat since her retirement snapping return to the sport last year – dropping a unanimous decision loss to recent big-winner, Brazilian contender, Ketlen Veira.

Miesha Tate made her UFC return last July after retiring from mixed martial arts in November 2016

The Washington native had snapped her six-year hiatus from the sport in July of last year foillowing her 2016 retirement, stopping the now-retired, Marion Reneau with third round strikes. Tate earned a Performance of the Night bonus in her Octagon comeback.

Seated at #10 in the official bantamweight pile ahead of her flyweight division debut, Tate weas initially set to meet with Anchorage native, Murphy in March of this year, however, the pairing has since been rescheduled for UFC 276 on July 2. during International Fight Week.

Tate, who will make her career berth at the flyweight limit against Murphy – detailed how she was surprised by some of the effects the move had brought with it.

“I’m shrinking… oddly enough, I knew making flyweight was going to require my body to change, but yet going through the process has still be (sic) surprising at every turn!!” Miesha Tate posted on her official Facebook page. “July 2nd it’s ON!! Me vs. Lauren Murphy, UFC 276.”

Striking Octagon gold back in the co-main event of UFC 196 in April 2016, Tate managed to rally against fellow former champion and recent UFC Vegas 55 headliner, Holly Holm, submitting the Albuquerque native with a fifth round rear-naked choke. Tate also previously landed undisputed Strikeforce bantamweight gold.

Joanne Wood Murphy

Joanne Wood (formerly Calderwood) was not impressed with Lauren Murphy’s performance against Valentina Shevchenko.

Wood was the last person that Murphy had to beat, in order to secure her shot with the flyweight champ, in a close fight that resulted in a split decision. Then Murphy went on to face Shevchenko, but lost in devastating fashion, getting TKOd in the fourth round of a one-sided fight.

Ahead of her return to the Octagon at UFC Vegas 43, Wood bashed Murphy for her performance against Shevchenko, while speaking on The MMA Hour. She said that Murphy did not really do anything to push the pace, and that she should have taken more risks to beat the champ.

“I feel like Lauren Murphy, she scraped that win from me, and then she went out and did that performance. At least go out on your sword,” Wood said (h/t Sportskeeda).

“Go out there and take it to the champ,” Wood continued. “For me watching it as a fan, I was like, there’s nothing happening here. I know Valentina’s a calculated killer, but you can at least go out there and make it exciting. Die on your sword.”

Joanne Wood might have the chance to prove that she can do better than Lauren Murphy, if she is able to get past Taila Santos, this weekend. She is one of the few contenders at 125lb that the dominant champion has not already beaten, so it does not take more than a win or two to put someone into title contention in the flyweight division.

Either way, the important thing is for Wood to get back on track tonight at UFC Vegas 43. From there, time will tell if she gets the next title shot against the champ, Valentina Shevchenko.

UFC flyweight contender Joanne Wood wasn’t a fan of her old rival, Lauren Murphy’s showing against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 266.

Wood is one of the few flyweight contenders who hasn’t fallen victim to Shevchenko’s title reign, but that’s because she’s lost top contender bouts against Jennifer Maia and Lauren Murphy during her tenure. She most recently lost to Murphy by a controversial split decision at UFC 263 and will face Taila Santos at UFC Vegas 43.

A win over Santos could give Wood the next title shot, as one of the few remaining first-time flyweight title challengers. During an interview on The MMA Hour, Wood ripped Murphy’s approach to the UFC 266 title fight against Shevchenko and claims she has the game plan to make it a difficult fight for the champ.

“I feel like Lauren Murphy, she scraped that win from me, and then she went out and did that performance,” Wood said. “At least go out on your sword.”

“Go out there and take it to the champ,” Wood continued. “For me watching it as a fan, I was like, there’s nothing happening here. I know Valentina’s a calculated killer, but you can at least go out there and make it exciting. Die on your sword.”

Joanne Wood Is Vying For A Title Shot With A Win At UFC Vegas 43

Despite losses to Maia and Murphy, Wood remains one of the top flyweights in the UFC today. She’s earned wins over noteworthy contenders such as Jessica Eye, Ariane Lipski, and Andrea Lee during her time in the octagon.

It’s unclear who Shevchenko will face next, whether it be a top flyweight contender such as Wood or a third fight with Amanda Nunes. Wood hopes to make the decision an easy one in her favor this weekend.

Do you think Joanne Wood will get the next flyweight title shot with a win at UFC Vegas 43?

After competing against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 266, Lauren Murphy can relate to what the victims of Khabib Nurmagomedov experienced.

There haven’t been many gladiators to ever grace the UFC Octagon who exhibited more dominance and utter superiority over their opponents than Khabib Nurmagomedov and Valentina Shevchenko. When watching the utter deflation of their targets, one might think that they all entered the cage already defeated. However, both Khabib & Shevchenko came to the same conclusion: It’s not that their victims lacked self-belief when they entered, but it didn’t take long after the fight began until that belief crumbled.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, one of these aforementioned victims, Lauren Murphy, shared her testimony of what it’s like to share the cage with Valentina Shevchenko, which she believes is an experience tantamount to sharing the cage with The Eagle. And just as Khabib and Shevchenko said of their victims, Murphy entered the fight expecting one thing but soon realized the unstoppable force she was up against.

“It’s a bummer to lose, and that’s the first time I had ever been finished,” Murphy began in an interview with MMA Fighting. “I think it was a good stoppage, I was pretty out of it by the time the ref pulled her off of me. It’s definitely not the outcome we wanted but, to be honest with you, it was pretty cool to be in there with a martial artist of her caliber. That’s a pretty cool experience. That must be what it’s like to go play one-on-one with Michael Jordan, or that’s how guys felt when they were competing with Khabib [Nurmagomedov], because it really was, ‘Holy sh*t, this girl is really on another level.’”

As strong of a comparison there is to be made between the dominance of Khabib Nurmagomedov and that of Valentina Shevchenko, Khabib isn’t the only fighter Murphy compares to “The Bullet.” Another fighter comes to mind, as well as a specific fight that also had a masterful performance.

“It reminded me of when Forrest Griffin fought Anderson Silva, and he said, ‘I tried to punch him, he moved his head, then he looked at me like I was stupid and he hit me back.’ That’s kind of what it was like. This must have been what it was like to fight Anderson in his prime. It’s cool to be in the presence of greatness. She’s an incredible fighter.”

Lauren Murphy Compares Valentina Shevchenko To Michael Jordan

Valentina Shevchenko has received high praise from her last opponent, Lauren Murphy, who she dominated, dismantled and dispatched of at UFC 266.

During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Murphy spoke about facing off against the “incredible” UFC flyweight champion who she compared to legendary basketball player, Michael Jordan.

Lauren Murphy Reflects On Her First Stoppage Loss

“She was incredible,” Murphy said of Shevchenko. “It was pretty crazy to be in there with somebody at that level because I’ve never truly competed with anybody that level before. I don’t remember the fourth round, really, so I guess that’s pretty good.

“It’s a bummer to lose, and that’s the first time I had ever been finished,” Murphy added.

Murphy realised in the first round that the fight with Shevchenko probably wasn’t going to go her way.

“We got into the fight and in the first round, one of the very first exchanges, Valentina cracked me with a right hook, I think, and I remember thinking, ‘I’m not gonna be tough through that. That’s gonna hurt me.’ Nope, being tough was a bad idea, that’s was a bad game plan,” Murphy explained. “I couldn’t see it coming at me and that was the big problem. If you get hit by a strike that you see, that’s one thing, but for it to come out of nowhere, that was something else.

‘Lucky’ expects Shevchenko to hold the 125lb strap for as long as she wants to.

“When I had walked out, I enjoyed the walkout, when we were being introduced, I didn’t feel too many nerves,” Murphy said. “That was all a good experience, but once the fight started, the skill level, it was just like, man, I can’t match this. When you get into a situation like that, what can you do? I fought my best, there’s nothing I could even feel bad about because we overcame all these challenges and gave it hell.

“It sucks to lose, but did I give it everything? Yeah, I think I did. Is Valentina head and shoulders above everybody in the division right now? Probably so. I can’t see anyone becoming champion while she decides to continue being the champion.”

Do you think Lauren Murphy is right to compare Valentina Shevchenko to Michael Jordan?
