The future of the UFC women’s flyweight division is left uncertain. A title bout between Valentina Shevchenko and Jessica Andrade has been booked for April 24th. Strawweight emperor Zhang Weili is looming in the corner, potentially seizing the winner, should she beat Rose Namajunas the same night. Where does that leave perennial contender Joanne Calderwood and her fellow flyweights though?

Having been booked against Shevchenko before (with the champ pulling out due to injury), Calderwood is looking for another opportunity to strike gold. Unfortunately for the Scot, she risked her would-be title shot in fighting Jennifer Maia last fall. She would lose her chance to be fight the undisputed champ, however she may be well within reach with another win.

“JoJo 2.0” would upgrade to 3.0 with a muay thai clinic against former title challenger Jessica Eye at UFC 257. Being back in the win column, her fiancée and coach John Wood says she is now 1 or 2 fights away from challenging Shevchenko for the strap.

What opponent would possibly propel the flyweight into title contention? Team Calderwood had the answer. #3 in the world, Lauren Murphy.

“Lucky” Lauren Murphy is riding a 4-fight win streak, the second longest streak in the division. After finishing Liliya Shakirova at UFC 254, Murphy called for a title shot. Unluckily, the title shot would never come, with former champ Jessica Andrade stealing the spotlight with a 1st round KO of #1 ranked Katelyn Chookagian earlier that month.

“We definitely put it out on our side that we would love to have that fight.” Wood told MMA Island. “Jojo would love to have that fight. It makes the most sense. While Andrade and Shevchenko are fighting, the division doesn’t get log-jammed.”

Top ranking UFC Women’s Flyweight Cynthia Calvillo has been pulled from her scheduled bout against Lauren Murphy at UFC 254.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto shared the news on Twitter stating that sources had informed him the UFC would be looking for a replacement to keep Murphy still on the card.

UPDATE: Calvillo will be replaced by UFC debut fighter Liliya Shakirova who will now face Lauren Murphy at UFC 254.

In an article for ESPN Okamoto went further explaining that the withdrawal comes after a positive COVID-19 test on Thursday.

Calvillo was set to make her second appearance at Flyweight after moving up from Strawweight to take on Jessica Eye in June. In this matchup, Calvillo shut out Eye earning a dominant Unanimous Decision victory. This win would extend her winning streak to three with her only loss coming against Carla Esparza in 2017.

Lauren Murphy was also coming into this fight on a winning streak of three, most recently defeated Roxanne Modafferi by unanimous decision in June. Coming in at number 6 a win against Calvillo would look to move Murphy into the top five of the division.

Currently, the UFC has not shared any news about who will replace Calvillo to keep this fight on UFC 254 to be headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje. This is not the first fighter to fall out of the PPV, last week Rafael Dos Anjos was forced to pull out due to a positive COVID test leaving Islam Makhachev without an opponent. The UFC remains hopeful they will be able to find him an opponent also so he may remain on the card with his teammate, the champions Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Outside the main event, UFC 254’s co-main event will showcase a matchup of two top-ranking Middleweight contenders when the former champion Robert Whittaker takes on the rising Jared Cannonier. The main card also showcases a key matchup in the heavyweight division between Alexander Volkov and Walt Harris, and a fight that has been rebooked many times between Magomed Akalaev and Ion Cutelaba.

Roxanne Modafferi

One-time flyweight title challenger Roxanne Modafferi will be back in action against Lauren Murphy on June 20 at a location yet to be disclosed according to a report from Mike Heck of MMA Fighting, that reads.

“Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans have confirmed to MMA Fighting that a fight between Roxanne Modafferi and Lauren Murphy is in the works for the UFC’s event on June 20. Currently, the event does not have a location, but the promotion is hoping the UFC APEX in Las Vegas will be the home base should COVID-19 restrictions be lifted.”

‘The Happy Warrior’ is flying high after picking up one of the biggest wins of her career last time out. Modafferi fought the previously unbeaten rising star Maycee Barber at UFC 246 earlier this year. In the fight ‘Roxy’ dominated from start to finish picking up a massive unanimous decision win. She’ll be heading into her fight with Murphy hoping to pick up consecutive wins in the promotion since joining 2018.

Murphy will be desperate to ensure that doesn’t happen. ‘Lucky’ is in a great spot herself after grabbing consecutive wins. She stopped Mara Romero Borella in August last year before earning the split decision win over Andrea Lee at UFC 247. The former Invicta champions seem primed for a flyweight title shot and beating Modafferi in June could well make her next in line for the winner of Valentina Shevchenko vs. Joanne Calderwood.

The UFC was supposed to hold an event in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada on June 20. Heavyweight title contenders Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes were set to headline the event but it no seems unlikely the card will go ahead in Canada and unclear if the same main event will be in place next month.

Do you think Roxanee Modafferi will beat Lauren Murphy on June 20?

Lauren Murphy Claims Eddie Alvarez Was ‘Degrading’ To Women On TUF

It’s safe to say UFC women’s flyweight Lauren Murphy is not a fan of former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

Murphy was part of Alvarez’s team during The Ultimate Fighter 26 back in 2017 leading up to the latter’s fight with Justin Gaethje. However, she would choose to train on Gaethje’s team later on in the season after clashing with Alvarez a number of times.

According to Murphy, a lot of what “The Underground King” did never showed up on camera and it included plenty of degrading behavior towards the female flyweights.

“He was really, really unkind to a lot of the women on that show, not just me, but a lot of the women,” Murphy told MMA Fighting’s The A-Side Chat. “I just happened to be the only one that would speak up or say anything about it, so it was that part that made it on air.”

“… He talked a lot of sh*t about the women, even the ones on his own team to the other women on his own team. When one woman would lose a fight, as soon as they walked out of the locker room, he would talk to the rest of the team about how they were quitters, they didn’t belong, they weren’t good enough to be there, they shouldn’t be there.

“I lost a fight, and the next day, he was like, ‘She’s not cut out for this sport.’ And he was telling my teammates that about me, and that’s not just me. He did that to all the women.”

Murphy went on to add that Alvarez never really respected any of the women, adding that one night he and a friend came to the house all of them were staying at and were drinking and watching fights without interacting with them in what she detailed as a “super bizarre” experience.

“… He treated us like we were all a bunch of jokes, like we were just stupid little girls with our stupid little game for our stupid little competition,” Murphy added. “He would be really degrading toward us.”

Alvarez has since joined ONE Championship and is yet to respond to these allegations at the time of writing.

Murphy, meanwhile, is currently on a two-fight winning streak with her latest victory coming in a split decision verdict against Andrea Lee at UFC 247 in February.
