A UFC women’s flyweight matchup between Cynthia Calvillo and former strawweight Nina Nunes on July 9th at a to-be-determined venue.

News of the booking was first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

Calvillo is looking to get back in the win column following three straight losses. She most recently lost to Andrea Lee last November via corner stoppage after suffering a broken orbital bone during the fight.

Calvillo’s last victory came against Jessica Eye in June 2020. She competed in a potential No. 1 contender bout against Jéssica Andrade at UFC 266 but lost via first-round TKO to the former strawweight queen.

Calvillo began her career in the strawweight division, earning three-straight victories to begin her UFC tenure before a loss to former strawweight champion Carla Esparza.

As for Nunes, she’ll make the move up in weight following back-to-back losses to Tatiana Suarez and Mackenzie Dern. Before that, she won four straight over the likes of Claudia Gadelha and Angela Hill.

The July 9th Fight Night event doesn’t have a venue or location just yet. The only other fight booked on the card is a bantamweight matchup between top prospects Ronnie Lawrence and Saidyokub Kakhramonov. Calvillo and Nunes will look to get back on track in a must-win for both female fighters.

It goes without saying, that Cynthia Calvillo is as tough as they come.

Heading into UFC Vegas 42, Calvillo was in pretty serious need of a win, having lost two of her last three. Unfortunately, she would receive her third loss in a row when her corner stopped the bout with Andrea Lee. The stoppage came between the second and third round and was due to the immense amount of damage she was taking and the serious swelling around her eye.

As it turns out, to the surprise of few, that swelling was so bad because Lee had broken the orbital bone of Calvillo. She revealed with a post to her Instagram that the orbital got broken at the end of the first round, but she fought through the entire second round, before the corner stoppage.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWb69mhPT_j/

“Dark places bring out the best in me. I’ve had worse losses than this in life. Orbital broken in the 1st round and people count me out. I know what i’m capable of. I’m a fighter no matter what they say. Thank you to all who still believe in me, I feel it. To the rest, I see it ??Too many people selling you wolf tickets to the max fighting nobodies! “pay my bills” i’ll beat their ass. The real ones know the truth. Talk your shit!!!” Calvillo wrote.

Given the information, fans should hold their tongues if trying to say that Cynthia Calvillo is a quitter because she did not make it out for the third round. Aside from the fact that it was a decision made by her corner, she already fought through a broken orbital for one round and there was no reason to keep taking punishment.

Hopefully, it will not take long for Calvillo to heal up so she can get back to action. With three losses in a row, hopefully she will be able to get back on the right path.

After losing to Jéssica Andrade by TKO in the first round at UFC 266, Cynthia Calvillo has issued her first statement since the defeat.

Inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Calvillo was stopped in the first round due to strikes. The fight started at a breakneck pace and saw the former strawweight champ swarm Calvillo. Unable to withstand the pressure against the cage, Andrade forced the TKO against the 34-year old.

As the curtain-raiser for the main card at UFC 266, the two were responsible for kicking off the show. After the first round finish, Cynthia Calvillo released a statement following the defeat on social media.

“To my family, friends and supporters, I love you and I’m ok. I’ll be back ???Congratulations to @jessicammapro . She is a beast! It was a dream of mine to share the octagon with her and I’m proud of myself for going out there in front of the world. Losing isn’t easy but as they say there’s beauty in the struggle. Highest highs and lowest lows. We live to fight another day!” Cynthia Calvillo posted on Instagram.

The defeat to Andrade marks Calvillo’s second back-to-back loss in the UFC. In addition, this is the 34-year old’s first defeat by TKO in the organization. With a 1-2 record overall in the flyweight division, Calvillo’s only win at 125-pounds was in June of 2020 against Jessica Eye. It will be interesting to see which path Calvillo takes in order to get back on track in the UFC.

Prior to the setbacks, the California native was mentioned briefly about competing for the title at 125-pounds last year. While her title aspirations are suspended for now, adjustments in her striking game will make her return to either weight class much more welcome.

Do you think Cynthia Calvillo needs to change weight classes or stay at 125-pounds?
