Stephen Thompson Continues To Question

Welterweight contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson wants to face either Colby Covington or Leon Edwards in his next fight.

Thompson is currently ranked #5 in the division and is likely just one big win away from a title shot. Last time out he emphatically beat fellow contender Vicente Luque over three rounds at UFC 244 to bounce back from consecutive defeats to Anthony Pettis and Darren Till.

Speaking to James Lynch of The Score, ‘Wonderboy’ made it very clear who he wants to fight next, he said.

“Colby Covington, for sure. I want to know what he has to say. He’s definitely not good at (trash talking), I’ll probably end up laughing at it,” Thompson said. “When you fight Colby Covington, you know what he’s going to do. He’s not going to fight me the same way he fights Usman. He’s going to shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot. It may be a boring fight, but it may be a good fight, I think.”

If he is unable to get matched up against Covington, Thompson is also interested in fighting British contender Edwards who is currently riding an impressive eight fight winning streak.

“Leon Edwards would be an awesome (fight),” Thompson said. “Leon Edwards would be a good one. He’s got great striking, man, and he’s becoming a better MMA fighter every time I watch him fight. At first, it was just the striking. Now he’s implementing the wrestling.

“When he fought Vincente Luque, the guy I just fought, he was taking him down left and right. He did the same thing to (Rafael dos Anjos) too, was taking him down and controlling him down. Man, this guy’s putting in some work, man, his wrestling’s getting a lot better, which makes him a very difficult opponent to prepare for.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)

Din Thomas, Tyron Woodley Want Colby Covington Next, Not Leon Edwards

Woodley Covington

Tyron Woodley and his coach Din Thomas want Colby Covington next rather than Leon Edwards.

Woodley and Edwards were set to collide in the UFC London headliner this past weekend. However, the card was postponed because of government restrictions both in the United Kingdom and the United States due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Before it was postponed, the card was set to relocate to the U.S. with Covington offering to step in and face Woodley on short notice. Given the pair’s heated history together, it was a fight many wanted to see, even more so than Woodley vs. Edwards. In the end, it never came to fruition.

While UFC president Dana White has plans on rescheduling all the postponed fights, Thomas revealed how him and Woodley would prefer to face Covington next.

“I mean it’s not really up to Tyron right now, I mean he’s not the champ anymore, so unfortunately he doesn’t any leverage to pick his opponents,” Thomas said in a recent interview (via BJ Penn). “I mean not that he did when he was champ but he’s got even less now. We obviously want Colby. I think that’s the fight more fans want to see but if Dana says it’s Leon [Edwards] then it’s got to be Leon.

“There’s no need to be difficult, Tyron believes in himself, I believe in Tyron, he’s going to win either way. If it has to be Leon then it has to be Leon, but we want Colby.”

Thomas recently departed American Top Team which means he doesn’t have to deal with Covington’s antics anymore. But as far as he is concerned, he only wants the fight because Woodley does — he personally doesn’t care about Covington at all.

“It still doesn’t mean anything to me,” Thomas said. “This is more just me getting my homeboy’s back because I know Tyron has a problem with him and he really wants to fight him. Leon is not a fight that he wanted but Colby is a fight that he wants, so it’s just me supporting my man and what he wants.

“For me it doesn’t matter, I don’t have any ill-will towards Colby, I don’t care about Colby. I don’t think about Colby one second other than when someone asks me about him. I don’t care whether Colby wins, loses, wins, or dies, it doesn’t matter to me.”

Welterweight title contender Leon Edwards has detailed the crazy lengths UFC wanted him to go to save his scheduled fight with Tyron Woodley.

The promotion was set to host an event in London this past weekend with Englishman Edwards in the headline slot against former 170lb champion Woodley. Unfortunately, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic meant that the event was scrapped, and the UFC planned to build an American based card at the last minute.

Edwards told BT Sport’s Adam Catterall exactly how everything played out and detailed the extreme lengths the UFC wanted him to go to, to help save their card, he said.

“I went to bed on Saturday night, and I got a phone call waking me up about 9 am on Sunday from my management team saying the fight’s off in London, and you need to get to America today,” Edwards said. “I was like, ‘hold on, what? How long [have I got]?’. They said you’ve got three hours to get to Heathrow and fly from Heathrow with your team. I was like, ‘that’s impossible.’

“I was like ‘where am I flying to’ and they said, ‘we don’t know yet,’ just get on a plane to America’ and we’ll sort that once we get there. So yeah, that was it really. They didn’t care about me getting back [with the travel ban]. They just cared about me getting there.”

Unable to leave his family on such short notice, Edwards tried to negotiate flying a couple of days later but was told it is now or never. This prompted his withdrawal from the card and the UFC began looking for alternative options before eventually scrapping the idea.

“We phoned the UFC again and said can we leave Monday or Tuesday, giving us a little bit more time to try and sort stuff out, but they said no, you’ve got to leave today [Sunday] if you wanna do it.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Edwards Tyron Woodley

Leon Edwards knows he and Tyron Woodley will fight eventually.

The two were expected to headline UFC London, yet the entire event was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 concerns. The promotion also postponed the next three events.

Following the postponement of the event, Edwards took to social media to let Woodley know the two will still fight very soon. He also hopes it will take place in London.

“Hopefully back in London,” Edwards said when a fan asked if the fight will happen on a later date.

“Tell that boy he can’t run from em his a** whooping is just delayed,” Edwards added when it was revealed the event was postponed.

While Edwards withdrew, Woodley was campaigning for a scrap with Colby Covington. “Chaos” was interested too, leaving many hoping the UFC will make that fight next. But, Edwards makes it clear him vs. Woodley is the fight to make.

“This fight is going to happen after we get back to normal programming don’t try to run now kid, f**k Covington the weasel,” Edwards wrote.

Leon Edwards vs. Tyron Woodley was a very interesting fight where the Englishman was the betting favorite. It also made sense in terms of rankings as the winner was expected to be next in line for the title assuming the UFC booked Kamaru Usman vs. Jorge Masvidal.

Edwards is currently on an eight-fight winning streak and hasn’t lost since 2015 when he dropped a decision to Kamaru Usman. Last time out, he defeated Rafael dos Anjos by decision in what was his biggest win to date.

Tyron Woodley, meanwhile, hasn’t fought since he lost his title to Usman at UFC 235 last March. Before that, he defeated Darren Till to defend his welterweight title.

Whether or not the UFC will re-book Edwards vs. Woodley once everything is back to normal is to be seen.
