British welterweight contender Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards has recently signed a new contract with the UFC, which apparently contains an impressive clause. The 28-year-old will meet former 170lb king Tyron Woodley in the UFC London main event taking place on March 21 at the O2 Arena. According to Edwards with a win in front of his home town crowd, he will be granted a title shot. He has to be, its written into his contract. However, many believe Jorge Masvidal is next in line at 170lb. Speaking to Aaron Bronsteter about a potential fight between ‘Gamebred’ and Kamaru Usman, he said.

“If I fight in March and he (Usman) is still injured, he’s still free before summer I think I’ll be the next in line. That’s how its written in my contract, I’m next in line.  It depends if he’s fighting before, in April or May they might make that fight happen (against Jorge Masvidal), but if not it’ll 100% be me for the summer time.

‘Rocky’ who is
currently riding an eight-fight win streak confirmed the clause is in his contract
and when asked to elaborate on the subject, he said. “After beating Tyron
Woodley, I will receive a title shot next. Like I’ve said I’m on the most fight
win streak in the division. I just dominated a former world champion, so after
beating him its guaranteed that I am next in line.”

It’s hard to disagree with the fighter from Birmingham. Should he beat Woodley he will have earned a career best win, stretching his streak to nine. Although fans will clamor for the popular Masvidal to get a shot, he may be forced to wait. Whilst ‘Street Jesus’ did enjoy an impressive 2019, he doesn’t have the wins and after UFC London, won’t have a bigger name on his record than Tyron Woodley. Whilst the former champion must fancy his chances at getting a shot at his old title after hearing this. If he emerges victorious at the O2 Arena on March 21 perhaps Woodley gets next on Usman. Whatever happen 2020 is going to be an exciting year in the welterweight division.

Will Leon Edwards get the next welterweight title shot
by beating Tyron Woodley?

Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley returns to action when he faces Leon Edwards in the UFC London headliner on March 21.

It’s a fight that has been in the works for a while but was only recently announced officially. So what made Woodley decide to fight Edwards in the end? Edwards has claimed that the UFC forced Woodley to accept the fight.

For his manager Abraham Kawa, it was simply to get back in the mix of things.

“I think Tyron looked at the landscape, and he said to himself, ‘OK, I got to get back to the mix of things,” Kawa told MMA Junkie. “We forget: Tyron always fought the No. 1 contender every single time … when we’re now living in the day and age of everybody (calling out) the big superstar, we pick and choose who it’s OK for and who it’s not OK for.”

It would definitely be ideal for Woodley to get back in the mix of things. After all, he will be competing over a year removed from his welterweight title loss to Kamaru Usman last March.

Putting a halt to the seven-fight winning streak of “Rocky” would certainly put Woodley in a position to get his rematch with Usman.

And as things stand, “The Chosen One” is just itching to remind everyone why he was the welterweight champion for nearly three years:

“He’s is completely and utterly just, ‘I’m going to kill people,’” Kawa addde. “That’s where Tyron is right now mentally. He wants to be that killer. He’s going to be that killer, so I don’t think it matters anymore who, where and what. It just doesn’t matter to him anymore. He wants to fight.”

Do you think Woodley will return with a bang?

“I am excited to re-sign with the world’s foremost MMA promotion,” Edwards said. “I have had an incredible run in the UFC thus far, and this contract secures my financial position as I make my run towards the welterweight title in 2020.”

Edwards has really emerged as one of the top contenders at 170 pounds and, perhaps, a future champion in the weight division. He currently rides an amazing eight-fight win streak that includes victories over names such as Donald Cerrone, Rafael dos Anjos, and Gunnar Nelson. He is slated to face ex-welterweight king Tyron Woodley next.

Their bout will headline the UFC London show from the O2 Arena on March 21. It’s a fight Edwards fought hard to get, while Woodley initially voiced his unwillingness to travel to London, Edwards’ home turf, and face “Rocky.” Nonetheless, Edwards suggests the UFC “forced” Woodley to accept the fight, or lose his place in the rankings, leaving him no choice but to agree.

Now, Edwards has the chance to solidify himself as the next challenger for the welterweight strap by defeating one of the best champions the division has ever seen in Woodley. Should he do this, there will be virtually no denying him the next crack at the gold, which is currently held by former foe Kamaru Usman, who defeated Edwards via unanimous decision in December of 2015. The loss remains the last Edwards has suffered in MMA competition.

As for Woodley, he heads into his fight with Edwards after dropping the welterweight title to Usman back in March of last year. It ended Woodley’s six-fight win streak and snapped his title defense streak at three. However, a win over, arguably, the hottest contender in the division would certainly put Woodley back on the fast track to the title.

What do you think about Edwards re-signing with the UFC? Do you think he’ll compete for a title in 2020?

Leon Edwards: UFC Had To Force Tyron Woodley To Fight Me

It’s no secret that former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley didn’t want to fight Leon Edwards in London next, however, that’s the fight that the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion has booked.

The pair will headline UFC London from the O2 Arena in London, England on March 21. While it was clear Woodley didn’t want to make the trip overseas for the contest, Edwards tells MMA Junkie that the UFC had to “force” the former welterweight champion to accept the fight.

“Tyron was trying to make excuses of why he shouldn’t come overseas and why he didn’t want to come to London,” Edwards told MMA Junkie. “The UFC had to force him into it. They gave him no choice but to take the fight. He was forced into it. He knows it’s a dangerous fight for him, and after I beat him, where does he go? He knows the risk.

“I went to Vegas and I had a meeting with Sean Shelby and Dana White and they were saying, ‘You’ve got no other options.’ He would fight me or they were going to move him out of the rankings. He had no choice. He had to take the fight. There’s no other way for him to go. He can’t wait out for a title shot because that’s not going to happen. It’s the only fight that makes sense for the division.”

Edwards has been extremely impressive in his welterweight run. The Englishman is on an eight-fight win streak over names such as Gunnar Nelson, Donald Cerrone, and Rafael dos Anjos. While he already had a case to challenge for the title next, a win over a former champion such as Woodley will make a title shot virtually undeniable.

“After this fight I’ll be ranked No. 1 and on a nine-fight win streak,” Edwards said. “That’s second most to the champion right now. There’s no bigger fight. I would have loved the title fight or (Jorge) Masvidal, but this is the next best thing. Fighting Tyron Woodley, a former world champion, some people consider him the best welterweight of all time.

“It’s good to be able to go out there and prove my case that I’m leaps above these guys. I look forward to going out there and putting on the performance of my life. I’ll show I’m better than these guys and it’s going to be good.”

What do you think about Edwards saying Woodley was forced to fight him?
