Leon Edwards believes “it’s madness” for there to even be discussions of Jorge Masvidal receiving the next welterweight title shot.

Masvidal shot right up the rankings following his flying knee knockout of Ben Askren at UFC 239 earlier this month. He has since called for a title shot and according to his management, his next fight will either be for the belt or with Conor McGregor.

But “Rocky” believes a win over Askren was never impressive in the first place:

“I never held Askren in high regard anyway,” Edwards told MMA Fighting. “He just shouted his mouth off to get to where he’s at.

He’s an amateur on the feet, I’ve watched him hit pads and it’s weird; even his shots are slow. He came in, he talked his way up into the position he was in and then he dipped his head into a knee.”

Masvidal Not Deserving Of Title Shot

Despite all that, Edwards doesn’t feel Masvidal is deserving of a shot. While “Gamebred” has now knocked out two highly-ranked opponents in a row, the other being Darren Till, he had lost his previous two before that.

Edwards, meanwhile, is on a seven-fight winning streak and could make it eight against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC San Antonio this weekend.

“It’s madness, really,” Edwards explained. “I don’t know where all of this title talk is coming from. Just two fights ago he was on a two-fight losing streak, he was probably gonna get cut from the UFC. I think the title talk is nonsense. It’s madness, but f*ck it, it is what it is.”

Masvidal and Edwards notably still have beef with each other after their UFC London encounter backstage. While they haven’t been booked to face each other since, it’s still a fight the latter wants:

“I’d be happy with a straightener [fist fight] in the park. Bring him over to Texas and we can get it straight after the fight. We need to fight,” he added.

Do you agree with Edwards that Masvidal doesn’t deserve a title shot yet?

Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal have unfinished business with one another. The pair engaged in a melee back at UFC London earlier this year.

Although many believed they’d be fighting each other next, especially given each man won their respective fight that night, the UFC decided to go in a different direction. Masvidal takes on Ben Askren this weekend (Sat. July 6, 2019) at UFC 239 on pay-per-view (PPV). Also, Edwards will headline UFC San Antonio against Rafael dos Anjos.

Speaking to MMA Junkie recently, however, Edwards said a fight against Masvidal will “100 percent” happen. Even if he has to fight “Gamebred” outside the controlled environment of the UFC’s Octagon:

“That fight will 100% happen even in the cage or when I see him at the streets,” Edwards said. “So that fight will 100 percent happen. That needs to happen.”

In regards to who he sees coming out on top between Masvidal and Askren, Edwards picked “Funky” to leave with the win:

“Ben is a weird one, he’s (expletive) but he finds a way to win,” Edwards said. “It’s a weird one but I’ll probably edge Ben for outgrappling him.”

What do you think about Edwards wanting to get his hands on Masvidal by any means necessary?

Leon Edwards Wants To Avenge Kamaru Usman Loss With A Win Over RDA

Leon Edwards is hopeful a win over Rafael dos Anjos earns him a chance at exacting revenge over current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Edwards will finally get a highly-ranked opponent in Dos Anjos when they collide in the UFC San Antonio headliner later this month. A win for “Rocky” could possibly move him high up the rankings and into the title picture. It would also put him on an eight-fight winning streak with the last person to defeat him being Usman via unanimous decision back in 2015.

It is why the Birmingham native wants to be the one to dethrone “The Nigerian Nightmare” should he come out on top against Dos Anjos:

“I’m putting in the work and beating so many of these so-called tough guys that everyone else is raving about,” Edwards told MMA Junkie. “So I feel after going out there and beating the former lightweight champion, that will put some eyes on me. And I would love, after beating him, getting the rematch against Kamaru Usman. I think that would be my dream after beating ‘RDA.’

“I want to be the one to dethrone him, to go out there and beat him. I feel like that would be the amazing story for that to happen. For me to go out there and beat him after he beat me three, four years ago, and I went undefeated, and then come back and beat him for the world title – that would be the perfect story.”

Edwards Can’t Be Denied Title Shot Against Usman

While there are other welterweight fights coming up that could determine the next contender at Usman’s title, Edwards feels he can’t be denied if he gets a statement win over a former champion in Dos Anjos:

“I feel after beating ‘RDA,’ that will put me right in line for a title shot,” Edwards explained. “I’ll be on an eight-fight win streak after beating ‘RDA,’ and how can they deny me, you know what I mean? My aim is to go out there and perform and stop the man and get a world title shot.

“He’s a former world champion, he’s ranked No. 3 in the world, so this is the fight I’ve been looking for. This is the fight I’ve been asking for, so I’m looking forward to going out there and proving my point and putting on a show.”

Do you think Edwards deserves a title shot with a win over RDA? Or should it be the winner of Jorge Masvidal vs. Ben Askren? Or Colby Covington vs. Robbie Lawler?

It looks like UFC San Antonio finally has its main event.

Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole has reported that former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will meet Leon Edwards in the main event. The show goes down on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. It had previously been reported that the UFC wanted to move Luke Rockhold vs. Jan Blachowicz from UFC 239 to main event the show.

However, Rockhold had a Ralph Lauren Polo commercial that day, which couldn’t be moved. As a result, Rockhold vs. Blachowicz will remain on UFC 239:

“Main event for UFC on ESPN 4 in San Antonio finalized: It will be Rafael dos Anjos vs Leon Edwards, five rounds. UFC wanted Blachowicz-Rockhold to move there, but Rockhold is filming a Ralph Lauren Polo commercial that day which couldn’t be moved.”

This matchup is an interesting one considering Edwards recently claimed “RDA” turned down a fight against him. Whatever the case, both sides have come to terms on a deal that will see them headline the San Antonio show.

In addition to this, MMA Fighting has learned that Alexander Hernandez, a local, will be competing on the show too. He’ll be taking on veteran Francisco Trinaldo. Cageside Press was first to report the matchup.
