It looks like UFC San Antonio finally has its main event.

Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole has reported that former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will meet Leon Edwards in the main event. The show goes down on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. It had previously been reported that the UFC wanted to move Luke Rockhold vs. Jan Blachowicz from UFC 239 to main event the show.

However, Rockhold had a Ralph Lauren Polo commercial that day, which couldn’t be moved. As a result, Rockhold vs. Blachowicz will remain on UFC 239:

“Main event for UFC on ESPN 4 in San Antonio finalized: It will be Rafael dos Anjos vs Leon Edwards, five rounds. UFC wanted Blachowicz-Rockhold to move there, but Rockhold is filming a Ralph Lauren Polo commercial that day which couldn’t be moved.”

This matchup is an interesting one considering Edwards recently claimed “RDA” turned down a fight against him. Whatever the case, both sides have come to terms on a deal that will see them headline the San Antonio show.

In addition to this, MMA Fighting has learned that Alexander Hernandez, a local, will be competing on the show too. He’ll be taking on veteran Francisco Trinaldo. Cageside Press was first to report the matchup.

It looks like a fight between Leon Edwards and Rafael dos Anjos won’t be happening anytime soon.

Edwards took to Twitter and claimed that the former Brazilian lightweight champion turned down a fight against him in August. He added that dos Anjos marks the fifth welterweight who has turned him down thus far:

“Got the official word that @RdosAnjosMMA turned down a fight with me in August. Add him to the list of pussies that don’t want this smoke. That makes 5 now. The so-called top welterweights are a joke #strapseason #mrdoitall

Currently ranked at No. 11, Edwards is on a seven-fight win streak within the division. In his last two victories, Edwards has picked up wins over names such as Donald Cerrone and Gunnar Nelson. Now, he’s looking to share the Octagon against a top-tier contender that can hopefully land him a shot at the title.

As for dos Anjos, he defeated Kevin Lee in May via fourth-round submission. The victory snapped a two-fight losing streak after dropping decision losses to both Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman – both of whom went on to win welterweight gold. Dos Anjos is ranked at No. 3 in the official UFC fighter rankings at welterweight.

Perhaps the Brazilian didn’t want to take a chance fighting someone so low down on the list. Edwards, on the other hand, is looking to fight up the ranks as high as possible. Given the complicated welterweight title picture at the moment, it will be interesting to see how things shake out when it’s all said and done.

Leon Edwards knows exactly who he wants to fight next.

Edwards previously called out former UFC champs Rafael dos Anjos and Robbie Lawler. Now, he’s doubling down on his callout of the former Brazilian 155-pound champ. “Rocky” took to Twitter to call out “RDA,” who he referred to as a “midget”:

“The fight to make for August or early September I would school this midget”

Currently, Edwards is on a seven-fight win streak over names such as Vicente Luque, Bryan Barberena, Donald Cerrone, and Gunnar Nelson. A win over a fighter the caliber of dos Anjos or Lawler would be a huge plus for his title aspirations.

As for “RDA,” he picked up his first victory since 2017 last week (Sat. May 18, 2019) over Kevin Lee. The pair main evented UFC Rochester, where dos Anjos submitted Lee in the fourth round by way of an arm-triangle choke. Before that, “RDA” was defeated back-to-back by both Colby Covington and current 170-pound champ Kamaru Usman.

Now at 170 pounds, dos Anjos is hoping to join a short list of fighters who have picked up titles in different weight classes. However, he’ll have to do it in one of the most talent-stacked divisions the UFC has to offer.
