Leon Edwards will meet Gunnar Nelson in the co-main event of the evening in an important welterweight bout on UFC on ESPN+ 5.

As always, LowkickMMA will have you covered with all the results from UFC London as they happen.

The UK’s Edwards (16-3) has been on a tear in the 170-pound division. “Rocky” has rattled off six straight wins. He most recently defeated Donald Cerrone last June. As for Nelson (17-3-1). After a controversial loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio in July of 2017, “Gunni” bounced back with a submission victory over Alex Oliveira at UFC 231 last December.

Round One

Edwards takes the center of the Octagon as Nelson bounces in his traditional karate style. Nelson lands a hard body kick and clinches Edwards against the cage. Edwards tries to escape but Nelson slams him back down to the canvas. Nelson looks to trap Edwards’ legs but Edwards fights his way back up. The British fighter manages to trip Nelson and he looks to take Nelson’s back. However, the cage is in his way. Less than two minutes to go and it is more of a chess match at this point. Both men are fighting for wrist control, but Edwards is the one threatening. Not much action going on, but Nelson does manage to get back to his feet. The round ends with the men looking at each other.

Round Two

Edwards quickly rushes to the center of the cage and throws a leg kick. Nelson throws a range finding jab. He times a leaping straight left hand but misses the mark. Edwards connects on a one-two as Nelson comes in for a takedown. Edwards lands a knee to the body of Nelson and escapes throwing an elbow. Nelson clinches and presses the British fighter against the cage. He cracks Edwards with a right hand on the break. Nelson leaps in with a right hand but Edwards uses his footwork well there. Nelson, however, lands a hard knee to the body. He lunges in with a back and and clinches Edwards again. He clips Edwards with a right hand on the break. Edwards blasts Nelson with a left elbow. Nelson drops. He pounces and drops bombs on Nelson. The fight could be stopped. Somehow Nelson survives the round ends.

Round Three

They touch gloves to start. Both men seem to have a slower pace here to start. Nelson shoots a deep takedown. Edwards has done a great job defending takedowns all night. They break and, again, Nelson looks for a punch, but Edwards was not there. Nelson drops his hands and closes the distance but Edwards quickly gains double underhooks and defends. He spins and threatens Nelson with a takedown. He lets Nelson up. Nelson lands a leaping right hand, Edwards drops. Nelson ends up in top control but he only has 40 seconds to work. He is landing some punches but he likely needs more. Edwards is holding on. The fight ends.

Leon Edwards defeats Gunnar Nelson via spl decision (28-29, 29-27, 29-28)

Lean Edwards and Gunnar Nelson will co-headline UFC Fight Night London when the Octagon returns to the United Kingdom.

UFC on ESPN+ 5 on March 16 will mark the return to the O2 Arena in London, England. Matchmakers have already been hard at work assembling one heck of a card. With news breaking earlier today of a Darren Till vs. Jorge Masvidal main event, UK fans are in for a treat.

A welterweight bout between Leon Edwards and Gunnar Nelson will serve as the co-main event. Brett Okamoto of ESPN was the first to share the news:

Edwards is riding a six-fight winning streak that dates back to June of 2016. He most recently defeated Donald Cerrone via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 132 in July.

Nelson recently bounced back from a disappointing loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio with a win over Alex Oliveira at UFC 231. The victory was called one of the most gruesome bouts of 2018, and for good reason.

It looks like Darren Till and Jorge Masvidal will match up at welterweight in London.

Initially, Masvidal was slated to welcome Nick Diaz back into the Octagon. However, the Stockton native refused to fight and now “Gamebred” is on the hunt for another match-up. It seems he has found it in Till, who have mutually agreed to fight one another.

The pair shared a respectful exchange on social media and agreed to fight. This has displeased Leon Edwards, who has been calling out his fellow countryman, Till, for quite some time.

Speaking to the Eurobash podcast, Edwards pled his case for why an all-English main event for the UFC’s return to Liverpool is the way to go (via MMA Fighting):

“I think that the best fight for London is obviously me and Darren Till, but for some reason either him or the UFC don’t want to make it happen,” Edwards said.

“I think that is 100 percent the best fight for the U.K. fans. I’ve been calling for this fight since last March when I last fought in London and I’ve been calling him out ever since.

“I’ve mentioned it to the UFC as well through my management, they’ve been working on it too and trying to make the fight, but for some reason he doesn’t want it. He claims to be one of the best welterweights in the U.K., I know I’m the best welterweight in the U.K. I feel like that should be sorted out in London in the main event.”

Training For Till

Till is coming off the first loss of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He was submitted by Tyron Woodley in a welterweight championship fight last year. Edwards believes Till finds a match-up against Masvidal favorable because he’s on a two-fight losing streak:

“I think he thinks he matches up better stylistically with Masvidal. Coming off a loss he wants to get a win. If a man was calling me out, he was saying ‘Let’s go’ and it made sense, I would do it.

“I can’t tell you what’s in his head or what he’s thinking, but as I said, I’m ready for that fight. I’m training towards that fight, but if I don’t get it I will take a fight against someone else who’s going to push me towards the title Masvidal is on a two-fight losing streak. He’s been doing that f*ckin’ TV show and all sorts!”
