Leon Edwards thinks he is one win away from being the deserving BMF champ.

Edwards is set to take on Jorge Masvidal, after a few years of build-up between the two, starting with a backstage brawl in 2019. This viral moment was the start of the meteoric resurrection of Masvidal, which included two shots at welterweight gold, a five-second knockout, and a Baddest Motherf—ker title win, by beating Nate Diaz to capture the specially crafted BMF belt.

With Edwards already holding a win over Diaz and being slated to face Masvidal at the end of the year, he believes that he is in line for a BMF title himself. Speaking on The MMA Hour, he made the case for why he should be considered the BMF champ if he beats the two men for whom the title was created.

“This is my 12th fight in a row without losing, and I am looking forward to going out there and showing the world just how good I am. To go out there and take out Nate and take out Masvidal, the two BMFs, I feel like I deserve that belt. Give me that belt after,” Edwards said.

This is not exactly terrible logic from Leon Edwards, who makes a good point, considering the fact that the BMF title was only on the line for one fight. That being said, there is also strong reasoning to back up the idea that Kamaru Usman is the lineal BMF champ, considering the fact that he holds two wins over Jorge Masvidal, including a brutal knockout.

Of course, this is all for fun, as the BMF title is not an actual belt with any real stakes. Either way, fans are pumped to finally see Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal square off in the Octagon.

Leon Edwards has opened up about the scuffle he had with Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal in 2019.

As the story goes, Masvidal has said he won two times that night. One against Till who he KO’d and the other one against Leon Edwards backstage after the fight. He punched Edwards right in the face leaving him bloody from the altercation. That was Masvidal’s side of the story, but Edwards has opened up about it and has told his side now on ‘The MMA Hour’.

“Afterwards they hid him away. They took him out the hotel, I don’t know where they put him. But they hid him somewhere in London and flew him out early hours of the morning. You know, he would have been hurt badly doing what he did, you know. So, they hid him away and took him, I don’t know where they took him and his team, and flew them out in the middle of the night. So, he knows that he had something coming to him and they had to get him out the country.”(MMANews)

Edwards despises Masvidal and claims he would have hurt him badly if they let him go at him. He explained how it is personal andhow it’s “on sight”. “They can not put me and him in the same environment. I feel they know that already… this is not just a fight, this is a war. I am coming for him, Wherever i see him, it’s on sight and that’s just it. It’s on sight Ariel, it’s on sight. When I see him, that’s it.”

Edwards has been on a great run and hasn’t lost since 2015. Edwars will finally be able to get his hands on Masvidal this December when the two square off at UFC 269.

UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards has revealed what happened in the aftermath of his backstage altercation with Jorge Masvidal in 2019.

Not many active rivalries in the UFC boast as much animosity as the one between Edwards and Masvidal. It all started in 2019 at a UFC Fight Night event in London. “Gamebred” faced and knocked out Edwards’ compatriot Darren Till in the main event.

During a backstage interview with Laura Sanko, “Rocky” walked past and exchanged words with Masvidal. After approaching the Englishman, the Miami native let his hands go and cut Edwards open with some fast strikes. He later coined the combination a “three piece and a soda.”

Given the altercation, many had expected the foes to collide in the Octagon soon after. Over two years later, the pair are still yet to do so, although they’ve now agreed to settle their score in the cage before the end of 2021.

Ahead of their blockbuster showdown, Edwards discussed the rivalry during a recent episode of Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour. When asked if anything occurred after the backstage clash, the #3-ranked welterweight revealed that the UFC scrambled to avoid a retaliation. According to him, Masvidal was hid somewhere in the capital and flown out of the country overnight.

So, he knows that he had something coming to him and they had to get him out the country.”

Despite Masvidal’s great escape, Edwards maintains that nothing has changed with regards to his attitude towards making the former title challenger pay. According to the Jamaican-born Englishman, things will get physical as soon as he sees “Gamebred.”

“The can not put me and him in the same environment. I feel they know that already… this is not just a fight, this is a war. I am coming for him, Wherever i see him, it’s on sight and that’s just it. [Even if it’s at the hotel?] It’s on sight Ariel, it’s on sight. When I see him, that’s it.”

Edwards will finally have his chance to get his hands on Masvidal at UFC 269, which will be the final pay-per-view of the year. The pair will meet in a three-round bout on December 11.

Who do you think will have their hand raised at UFC 269, Leon Edwards or Jorge Masvidal?

Michael Bisping has chimed in on the fight between Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal that is being held at UFC 269.

The long awaited grudge match between Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards and Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal was finally made, and will be taking place on an exciting fight card in December. Edwards is currently on a 9 fight win streak and has been demanding a title shot. The only fight he was considering taking was the Masvidal fight if the price was right. Well, the price must have been right as Edwards tweeted out “Millionaire” after agreeing to fight ‘Gamebred’ on December 11.

Former Middleweight champ turned analyst, Michael Bisping weighed in on the fight between the two, “It’s a very complicated web that has been weaved by the UFC. If Leon beats Masvidal, it’s gotta be a title fight… Of course, Masvidal is a massive star, Leon takes that star. But for that to happen, Usman has to beat Covington, which I think will happen” (Sportskeeda)

Coincidentally, both Masvidal and Edwards last defeat were by the hands of the champ, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Kamaru Usman. Masvidal lost both chances to claim gold against Usman, one by decision and the other by a devastating KO. Edwards lost to Usman back in 2015, when both fighters were just getting their feet wet in the UFC.

If Edwards wins against Masvidal it would be apparent that Edwards is the number 1 contender for the title. It is debatable whether or not he should be the one fighting Usman for the title in November. Instead, Usman will be fighting Covington in a rematch. Covington gave Usman the best fight to date, but Edwards has been the most dominant contender in the division. The questions we have about the division will be answered sooner rather than later.

Do you agree with Michael Bisping?Do you think Leon Edwards will be the next person to fight for the title?

Leon Edwards Asked For Five-Round Fight With Jorge Masvidal At UFC 269

Leon Edwards wanted his fight with Gamebred to be five-rounds.

When the news broke that Jorge Masvidal and Edwards were finally going to fight at UFC 269, the general consensus was that the top-ranked welterweights would be fighting for five rounds. The UFC has been doing for notable fights, like Edwards vs. Nate Diaz and Nick Diaz vs. Robbie Lawler. Nope, it is a regular three-round fight.

On Wednesday, Edwards spoke with MMA Fighting and revealed he asked the UFC for a five-round fight.

“The last three years, all he did was make excuses. I asked the UFC for a five-round fight with him, but I think he turned around and said he wanted three rounds. So that’s the reason that we’re at three rounds, you know, so either way, a fight is a fight,” Edwards told MMA Fighting.

Championship fighter

“Rocky,” said the reason he wanted five rounds was because he is a championship fighter and hasn’t been in a three-round fight in a while.

“I haven’t fought three rounds now for a while. I’m a championship fighter. My last five fights have been five rounds, so I am looking forward to going three. I can sprint at three [rounds] so, I’m looking forward to it,” Edwards said.

The last time Edwards was in a three-round fight was the night this beef with Masivdal started and got personal. He fought Gunnar Nelson in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Till vs. Masvidal, while “Gamebred” headlined the event. During Masvidal’s backstage post-fight interview, Edwards interrupted him, and all hell broke loose, which led to Masvidal striking him backstage.

“3 piece with soda” was born that night, and Edwards has been looking for revenge ever since.

Well, he will get his chance on Dec. 11 at UFC 269.

Edwards did not mince his words during his interview with MMA Fight.

“This is war…I’m going out to hurt him.”
