MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani was recently embroiled in a highly-publicized beef with the UFC after being banned for life from all upcoming events due to the journalist breaking news that former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar would make his Octagon return at UFC 200 before the revealing video promo was released at UFC 199.

Helwani and his staff were escorted out of the arena following the conclusion of the co-main event of UFC 199, having their credentials removed as well.

Helwani’s ban has since been lifted after an outpouring of support from his fellow MMA media members, but he still took the opportunity to dish out some of the seedier aspects of his packed career as a MMA reporter.

Two days following the event Helwani held a ‘tell-all’ Monday afternoon following buzz of the incident circulating throughout MMA media, as he dished on his work for the UFC and FOX throughout the years on his show ‘The MMA Hour.’

ArielHelwaniDanaWhite

Helwani first started off by crediting UFC President Dana White for always treating him with respect since the beginning of his journalism career:

“In 1997 the first time I interviewed him, my microphone died and he said ‘Go out and get another one, I’ll be waiting here.’ And I went outside, I went in my car and got another microphone, and he was still there when I came back.

“He’s always given me the time of day and it hurts me that this has happened. But maybe I’m crazy, maybe I’m dreaming, but I felt like deep down inside he didn’t want to do that. I think he was respecting the wishes of his partner (Lorenzo Fertitta), who I’ve never really had a close relationship with, and he was doing what he was essentially told.”

Then an incident involving the main event of UFC 196 was mentioned, when Helwani got wind that UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos was injured and out of his scheduled title defense against Conor McGregor:

“When I asked the UFC if Rafael dos Anjos was injured prior to UFC 196, you know what I was told? ‘Not true.’ Guess what? He was injured, and I knew he was injured, I knew for a fact that he was injured. They were already talking about Nate Diaz at that point. So then you’re faced with a moral dilemma, someone who you respect is telling you on the record that it’s not true and you’re going to go out and report it? That’s going to make things worse in my opinion.”

Helwani then began to tell the story of his employment with FOX and the UFC, beginning at the relationship’s inception in 2010:

“It kind of all started around December of 2010. A production company that I knew say ‘We want to make a show about you, like an MMA show.’ And I remember where I was, I was in Montreal for UFC 124. And one of the places they wanted to pitch this show to was Fuel TV, remember Fuel TV?

“I thought that was great, this is my big TV debut; this is awesome. I’m gonna have a show, an MMA show, this fantastic lets do it. Now again, I believe that I owe a lot to Dana White, and we’ve had a great relationship. I’ve sent him pictures of my kids, and he’s said nice things. And when the Patriots beat the Bills, he says not so nice things, but it’s been a fun ride and I hope this isn’t the end.”

ariel helwaniWith the lucrative TV deal on the table, Helwani called up White to get some advice on whether or not he should accept the offer:

“Well I called Dana and asked him , ‘Hey I have this opportunity maybe on Fuel TV, what do you think? Should I do it?’ I was actually looking for his advice. He told me that that wasn’t a good idea. He told me that the TV deal’s coming up, end of 2011, bigger opportunities are coming, just hold off on that.

“Do you know how hard that was for me? Do you know how hard it was to say ‘no’ to a potential TV opportunity, the first one of my career? I struggled with that so much, it was the hardest thing. It was the hardest decision, to go back to this group and say ‘You know what, I have to bow out.’ I didn’t tell them why, but ‘I have to bow out, I’ll explain why later.’ And why did I do that? Because I really respected Dana and what he was telling me, I really respected his advice.”

After Helwani respectfully declined the offer, but the UFC then went into business with FOX, which immediately upset the journalist as he had taken White’s advice:

“But the funny thing was, ten our so months later, UFC signed a deal with FOX. Guess what was they’re ‘unofficial’ home so to speak? Fuel! And so I was thinking to myself ‘I could have been there before the launch.

Why did I turn this down?’ Well as you know, as was reported by the Wall Street Journal, the UFC was in talks with NBC at the time. Viacom at the time. G4 was going to be the UFC Network. FOX came in at the eleventh hour, so I was like man… But It all worked out because I ended up on Fuel anyway.”

UFC President Dana White actually gave Helwani the scoop that the announcement of partnership between the UFC and FOX would be made official in L.A., so Helwani immediately flew out to cover the event:

“And I’ve told you about this first meeting with the FOX brass, this was in August of 2011 right after the big announcement. I sat down with a couple of people from FOX, and I remember them telling me that ‘Look we’re going to be in business with the UFC, but we want to do journalism.’ And you know my eyes lit up when I heard that.

But they didn’t offer me a contract that day, and I give a lot of credit to Dana, Dana actually told me that they were going to make the news official — they were going to break the news on that day, and that’s how I knew to fly out to L.A. for the big announcement.”

UFC 199 was far more than just a dramatic filled night for the fighters, as highly respected MMA journalist Ariel Helwani engaged in a bit of drama himself.

Helwani revealed on Twitter shortly following the card’s co-main event that he and his staff had been escorted out of the arena, as well as having their credentials removed and given a life-long ban from all future UFC events.

Monday afternoon Helwani detailed the incident in it’s entirety, live on The MMA Hour:

“Right before the main event, a member of the UFC PR staff told me that ‘Dana White wants to speak to you’. Michael Bisping was about to fight Luke Rockhold, and I had the feeling this wasn’t going to be the most pleasant conversation, and I didn’t feel like anything was good going to come out of it. So I said look ‘I want to watch this fight, I don’t really want to go back and talk to him.’”

Dana-White-and-Ariel-Helwani-at-UFC-121Helwani, however, appeared to have no choice but to speak to the UFC President, so he brought along a colleague as he did not feel comfortable going in alone:

“A couple minutes later, a higher ranking PR person came to me in a very serious way and said ‘you must come to the back.’ And I said ‘I’m not going to the back unless my colleague Casey can come with me.’

I didn’t want to go alone. I didn’t know what was going to happen, I wasn’t going to go into that storm alone. After some back and forth he agreed to let Casey come back with me.

So we go to the back, it was just a hallway a few steps from the media room, the main event is about to start by the way, and Dana White is there, some other members of his team are there, and he just says to me ‘You’re out, get out of here. You’re done, we don’t want you here anymore, go to Bellator.’

I said ‘Why?’ He said ‘You’re too negative’. I said ‘How is what I’m doing any different than all of the other great sports journalists out there?’ “

Apparently UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta was not too pleased with Helwani’s releasing of the news that former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar would be returning to the Octagon at UFC 200:

“I was talking about a guy who was getting ready to sign a contract to fight, I wasn’t talking about super secretive stuff. I wasn’t talking about the sell. I wasn’t talking about disparaging things. It’s all a little bit embarrassing because I’m not doing any real investigative journalism here. This is fight stuff.

He said, ‘Lorenzo wanted you out of FOX’, and that happened ,’and he want’s you out of here and so you’re out.’ Now I will say a lot was said in this conversation, I think initially he wanted it to just be ‘You’re out see you later.’ But a lot of words where said and a lot of what I thought were mean spirited things things were said. “

lorenzo-fertitta-fox-sports-liveHelwani was reluctant to reveal just what was ‘all said’ during his exchange with White, however, he did express his admiration for the UFC’s President:

“I’m not going to betray that trust, despite the fact that they did that, and I’m not going to repeat all of it. But when you have someone of Dana’s stature saying the things he said to me it does affect you.

I said look Dana, as I’ve said in many interviews and as I’ve said on this show, I owe a lot to Dana White in particular. I really do.

And I don’t think he was torn up over it, I think he was pretty upset that I beat them to the punch so to speak, but that’s how I kind of felt in the moment.”

White also told Helwani that Lesnar himself was apparently very upset with the news of his return leaking out before the promo was revealed:

“He also said that Brock Lesnar was really upset about the news, now its interesting, Brock Lesnar went on ESPN Sports Center and said he doesn’t know who I am.

Of course thats not true, thats just Brock being Brock, he has said this many times before. The whole Undertaker thing, I don’t really take offense to that, but I did ask some people if that was true, about him being upset, and they said that couldn’t be any further from the truth.

Brock Lesnar is getting paid a lot of money to fight at UFC 200, he couldn’t care less who’s reporting what. I think we know that by now, when it comes to Brock. “

dana whiteA UFC PR spokesman then told Helwani that he should have had the ‘professional courtesy’ to run the news by them first:

“In the midst of this conversation, the PR person standing behind Dana White said that I could have had the professional courtesy to run this by them.

This to me is an unbelievable line of thinking. Why? Well how about the fact that the night before, Brett Okamoto of ESPN asked Dana White if Brock was in negotiations to fight at UFC 200, and he told him no.

So whats the difference? You think he was going to tell me that? At best I would’ve gotten a ‘no comment.’

I probably would have gotten a ‘don’t report that’ as I’ve gotten in the past. And been forced to sit on things, as I’ve been forced to in the past.”

A passionate Helwani then went on to say that there is nowhere in the ‘rulebook’ that says you must run things by the company you’re reporting on before doing so:

“I graduated form one of the very best journalism schools in the world, Syracuse University, the SI Newhouse School Of Communications, and trust me nowhere in the rulebook does it say you have to run things by the the organization when you’re about to report them.

What they do teach you is, if you have at least two credible sources confirming this news, and you feel strongly and are confident that this is right, you’re good to go.

No matter what it is. So to hear that I should have had the professional courtesy, to run something by them, to me is just mind-blowing. Because time and time again we’re either told ‘no comment’ or we’re just lied to. “

Helwani then stated he does not hold any ‘ill wills’ towards White, and that he hopes the conflict can soon be resolved:

“So I told Dana that I really thank him for everything that he’s done for me, again I don’t hold any ill will’s towards him. He’s done a lot, I extended my hand to shake his hand, and I think he shook I don’t remember to be honest but I think he did.

And I said ‘I hate that this is happening and I hope that at some point you will reconsider this, I understand that you are mad and I’m not going to create a stink. But I really hope that cooler heads will prevail.’ “

White apparently also tole one of Helwani’s colleagues that his wife, who was sitting cage -side, also had to leave the arena:

“He then looked at Casey, who has been my videographer since 2009, my partner in crime I think he’s the best, not just in MMA but in sports, and asks him if his fiancee, he referred to her as wife but they’re not married just yet, asked him if she was cage side.

He said yes, and Dana said that she has to leave as well. And that really bugged me because they did nothing wrong. I’ve been with them for a long time, and I consider them good friends, and I didn’t want to see them leave and not be able to do they’re jobs.

And I hope this doesn’t affect MMAFighting, if it effects me– my colleagues didn’t do anything wrong and to be honest I didn’t do anything wrong, but at the end of the day they’re mad at my reporting. Im the one. They shouldn’t have to face repercussions in my opinion. “

ArielHelwaniDanaWhiteThe group was escorted from the arena all the way to their vehicles in the parking lot, making Helwani feel like he was ‘being watched like a dog’:

“He told me to leave, again other things were said not that important at this moment to go over them, I thanked him and we went to the back.

Someone followed us, someone stayed with us as we packed all our stuff, it was disappointing Michael Bisping’s music was playing and it was all just very surreal. They watched us, like we were— I felt like I was being watched like I was a dog, they watched us pack our things and they walked us out.

Like literally walked us out till we were pretty much next to our car just to make sure. In fact as we were about to go into the care I opened Twitter, and I saw that Michael Bisping became the middleweight champion I was like ‘I can’t believe all this is happening.’ “

Helwani was extremely emotional during the course of the show, however he did state that it was going to take a lot more than this to get rid of him as he claims he plans to stay covering the sport for a long time. Do you think we’ll ever see Helwani back at a UFC event again?

Apparently the meeting between Nate Diaz and the UFC brass didn’t go quite as smoothly as their recent meeting with “The Notorious” Conor McGregor.

As noted, UFC management, including Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta, met with McGregor earlier this week to attempt to settle their dispute with the reigning UFC 145-pound champion.

Shortly after their meeting, UFC contender Nate Diaz reportedly requested that they meet with him in his hometown of Stockton, California.

White and Fertitta would oblige, and according to TMZ, met with Diaz only for White to lose his cool at some point during the meeting. According to various reports, White stormed out of a restaurant where the meeting was held.

Prior to the meeting, the UFC brass posed for the following picture of a Nate Diaz mural taken from the first fight with McGregor.

According to UFC President Dana White, it’s only a matter of time before UFC owners Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank Fertitta buy an NFL franchise.

White addressed the rumors about the Fertitta brothers buying the Oakland Raiders and moving the team to Las Vegas, Nevada, during his appearance on “The Jim Rome Show.”

“Here’s the thing — as you know you can’t own an NFL team if you’re involved with casinos. So if they were really making a serious move at the Raiders, they’d be selling Station Casinos not the UFC,” White said on Friday.

White continued, “But it is 100-percent a fact, they are hardcore football fans and I promise you one day the Fertitta brothers will own an NFL team. No doubt about it.”

The MMA world was sent into minor upheaval earlier tonight (Tues., May 10, 2016) when a report surfaced from ESPN’s Darren Rovell that the UFC was allegedly in ‘advanced talks’ to sell the company to a host of four potential bidders.

Those bidders supposedly include WME/IMG, China Media Capital, The Blackstone Group and Dalian Wanda Group, with the final group being backed up by China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin, and his $35 billion net worth. The asking price for the UFC was reported to be in the $3.5 billion to $4 billion range, and the UFC was supposedly being represented in the potential sale by financial giant Goldman-Sachs, at least to ESPN’s unnamed sources.

However, UFC President Dana White quickly refuted that report in a discussion with The Las Vegas Review-Journal, offering his always outspoken opinion that Rovell ‘does not like facts’ in his ‘overblown’ story:

“The UFC is not for sale,” White told the Review-Journal on Tuesday evening. “The ESPN story is overblown. Darren Rovell is not a fan of facts. His facts could not be further off.”

White can often be seen denying most breaking stories that he or his team did not drum up himself, and indeed, rumors of a potential sale by UFC owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta have been looming for months. Yet Rovell’s sources have not been confirmed, and until a deal is made official, then we’ll have to listen to White’s rebuttal otherwise there’s proof otherwise.

What do you think? Will be big, overarching change at the top soon be on the horizon for the world’s biggest MMA promotion?

According to a report by ESPN, the UFC is in advanced talked to have new owners.

The report states that four bidders have submitted bids for the organization, which Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta hold majority stake in. The two brothers, along with Dana White and Flash Entertainment are joint owners.

“As a private company, we don’t discuss speculation or rumors related to our business,” UFC vice president of public relations Dave Sholler said.

Chinese-based Dalian Wanda Group is believed to be the leader with a bid between $3.5-4 billion. Chariman Wang Jianlin is the richest man in China, worth nearly $35 billion.

Last year, Wanda bought 20-percent of soccer power Atletic Madrid and is a FIFA partner. They also are owners of Legendary Entertainment, a major Hollywood film studio.

Along with Wanda, WME/IMG, The Blackstone Group and China Media Capital are believed to be the other bidders.

The UFC was founded in 1993 by Art Davie, Campbell McLaren, Rorion Gracie and Bob Meyrowitz. In 2001, the Fertittas bought the UFC for $2 million and created Zuffa, LLC, which has controlled the promotion since.

Under the guidance of the Fertittas and White, the promotion has grown into a major force. They have purchased several other MMA promotions along the way and continue to build UFC Fight Pass as an all-digital service.
