UFC Owner ‘Never Thought’ Conor McGregor Would Give Him Problems

In all of the recent chaos of featherweight champ Conor McGregor’s ‘retirement’ and UFC-imposed withdrawal from his scheduled rematch with ate Diaz in the main event of July 9’s UFC 200, UFC President Dana White has largely kept things professional by insisting the promotion’s relationship with ‘The Notorious’ is still strong.

While that may not be what we’re accustomed to from the normally outspoken White, there have been some rumblings in the MMA world that it wasn’t his idea to pull the ultra-popular McGregor from the historic card. Supposedly that call came from UFC co-owner and Las Vegas icon Lorenzo Fertitta, and he apparently revealed a bit of discord with McGregor in a recent conversation with longtime UFC referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy.

McCarthy stated on his “Let’s Get It On” podcast that he spoke with Fertitta backstage at last weekend’s (Sat., April 23, 2015) UFC 197, and the prominent exec was surprised that a fighter making so much money was actually giving him problems:

“I talked to Lorenzo Fertitta at UFC 197, standing in the back, and we started talking. He said, ‘I never thought that when I had a guy who was guaranteed ten million dollars I would have a problem with him.”

It could be a great point from Fertitta, who’s understandably focused on McGregor’s pay, the first fighter to ever receive a flat $1,000,000 purse for his loss to Diaz this March and countless other millions in pay-per-view (PPV) revenue and endorsements.

McGregor has routinely said his decision to skip the UFC 200 press conferences is not about his profits but rather his need to get back to training full-time in order to beat a bigger opponent. However, that’s just part of the game, and he had no problem spouting off at every single presser when he was knocking out smaller fighters in rapid succession.

He rapidly rose to the position of MMA’s biggest drawing star, yet the UFC’s owner is miffed that he is a headache given his already sky-high paydays. This is a situation that’s unlikely to go away anytime soon, but perhaps ‘The Notorious’ would be rise to keep his employer happy.

Do you believe he should, or are you happy a fighter finally stood up to the world’s foremost MMA promotion in a big way?

UFC has big plans for the next few years now that MMA is officially legal in the state of New York.

In addition to the previously announced UFC 205 event at Madison Square Garden in New York City in November, UFC is also looking at running events in Albany, Syracuse and Rochester.

But that’s not all.

According to UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, there is already plans in the works for a potential UFC event at Yankee Stadium.

“There’s a bunch of other venues we want to go to,” Fertitta told Newsday. “We want to go to Barclays, we’ve had discussions with Yankee Stadium to do something next summer there.”

The Newsday article goes on to confirm that while no official negotiations have taken place yet between Yankee Stadium officials and the UFC, the two sides do plan to sit down together in the near future.

After many unsuccessful attempts over the years, the UFC finally got what they’ve been pushing for when mixed martial arts was legalized in New York last month.

To make matters even more realistic, Governor Andrew Cuomo officially signed the bill today (April 14, 2016), and the UFC has announced its inaugural show at the legendary Madison Square Garden for November 12, 2016.

The event will serve as UFC 205.

As far as who may compete on the card, or rather who may headline it, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta told MMAFighting.com that former bantamweight queen and global superstar “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey could make her much anticipated return in New York:

“It’s certainly a possibility (Ronda Rousey is on the card).” Fertitta said. “Nothing has been determined yet. We’ll kind of see what happens. I can tell you that whatever card we do bring, it will be massive. It’ll be a big card with our biggest names.”

Rousey has been out of action since a shocking knockout loss to Holly Holm at last November’s UFC 193 from Australia. A return date has not yet been confirmed for the “Rowdy” one, but UFC President Dana White has previously stated that next Fall would likely be an ideal timeframe, making UFC 205 a real possibility.

Whether or not Rousey will headline the card is obviously still up in the air, but Fertitta did confirm that the card will play host to at least one title fight:

“Yes, I would say that that (a title fight) will happen.”

Who would you like to fight when the UFC finally heads to the Empire State next November?

UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and former UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman felt like most of the MMA community when watching the New York State Assembly vote to legalize professional MMA in the state of New York on Tuesday.

Fertitta and Weidman spoke in a conference call that featured several UFC executives after the event and in the former UFC 185 pound champion’s opinion, many of the comments made in the speeches given during the voting process were “ridiculous” and “embarrassing.”

“Some of the things they were saying were so ridiculous that I was actually happy and embarrassed for them for even bringing it up,” Weidman said during the conference call.

“First of all, that comment by [Daniel] O’Donnell was absolutely ridiculous,” Fertitta added. “And no, that is absolutely — we have no knowledge of anything like that. We invested in the sport, no different than we have done in the last 15, 16 years. It’s unfortunately part of the process.”

Among the comments made by Daniel O’Donnell was this gem.

“You have two nearly naked, hot men, rolling around on top of one another trying to dominate each other. And in case you didn’t know, that’s gay porn with a different ending.”

You can watch footage of Daniel O’Donnell’s speech above. Additionally, you can listen to audio of the UFC conference call after the vote below. Featured in the call are UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, UFC Executive Vice President and COO Lawrence Epstein, UFC Senior Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner and former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman.

Lorenzo Fertitta Hopes To Get Two Events In New York By End Of 2016

In a historic day for mixed martial arts, New York became the final state to legalize mixed martial arts. The 19-year ban was lifted by a vote of 113-25. The UFC held a media conference call earlier today to talk about the good news.

UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta says that the UFC is still waiting for the governor to sign the legislation into law and for the New York State Athletic Commission to start adopting the unified rules. Once that is done, the UFC can hold events and have stated that they would like to not only go to New York City, but cities like Syracuse, Buffalo, and Rochester too.

However, this has not stopped Fertitta from talking with venues already and have a set goal on the number of events they want in New York by the end of the year.

“The governor still has to sign the bill, the athletic commission needs to adopt the rules, promulgate regulations, 120 days from when the governor signs the bill before we could hold an event,” Fertitta said in a media conference call. “So we’re hopeful that we’ll be able to get at least two in by the end of the year.”

Some of the UFC’s top fighters come from the state of New York. These fighters include Jon Jones, Chris Weidman, Uriah Hall, and Aljamain Sterling.
