Andy Ruiz Luis Ortix Deontay Wilder

In a division defined by its power, Andy Ruiz kept the tradition alive tonight by displaying some brutal strength against Luis Ortiz. Ortiz would technically win more rounds on the judges’ scorecards, but the knockdowns by Ruiz added up and granted him the unanimous decision victory against a formidable foe.

With a pace that some would claim to be stale and a little slow, the action would intensify in the blink of an eye. Ortiz’s jab was crisp and prominent, but the heavy hitter Ruiz would find a way behind it to land some devastating power shots that would put him down.

Things heated up in the second round, as a monstrous right hand would score a knockdown for Ruiz. Ortiz would get back to his feet, but wouldn’t yet fully regain his bearings before another huge blow would send him crashing to the canvas once more for a second knockdown.

The rest of the match would pass on with little spectacle. Ortiz’s jab once again asserted itself, but another knockdown by Andy Ruiz in the seventh round would be the clincher, and a miracle would be needed for Ortiz to be victorious on the scorecards.

Andy Ruiz speaks on his future activity while Luis Ortiz confronts defeat

Despite getting dropped so many times, the 43 years-old Luis Ortiz seemed proud of his efforts and wasn’t yet ready to retire from professional boxing.

“I told you I was going to be a warrior,” Ortiz said after the fight, as transcribed by CBS Boxing. “I love this. This is Cuba vs. Mexico. It was a war. … If they said ‘King Kong’ is old. I gave you a war today. I think I gave a good fight tonight.”

Andy Ruiz was ecstatic to get his hand raised again. He made boxing history when he defeated Anthony Joshua to win the IBF, WBO, and WBA titles, but was defeated in the rematch. Since then, it’s been a sporadic journey, as Ruiz has only fought twice now since that loss in the rematch with Joshua three years ago.

“Staying active, man. I don’t want to be waiting so long before I fight,” Ruiz would say. “I want to be fighting three or four times a year. I’m ready. I want to bring the belt back to Mexico.”

Deontay Wilder was in the crowd and even entered the ring to speak to Ruiz about a potential fight after the Mexican boxer called him out. Wilder, who has a fight in October, seemed very willing to the idea as long as things went to plan for him against his opponent.

Lineal boxing heavyweight champion Tyson Fury was not impressed by Deontay Wilder’s performance against Luis Ortiz.

Wilder retained his WBC heavyweight title following a seventh-round knockout of Ortiz in their rematch on Saturday night. However, the American was struggling for most of the fight as Ortiz was outboxing him throughout until the decisive punch.

It led many to once again wonder how Fury was able to get up from the shots he took from Wilder when they first met in December last year. Luckily, that seems to be the next fight for both fighters as Wilder is targeting a rematch with Fury in February.

However, “The Gypsy King” remains confident of getting the victory, especially based on his and Ortiz’s showing against Wilder:

“Wilder has nothing more than a punchers chance vs me, I’m gonna school even more than the first fight. ???????? #BUMCITY” Fury wrote on Sunday.

Similar to Ortiz, Fury outboxed Wilder for virtually 12 rounds in their WBC title fight last year. Wilder did land two knockdowns during the fight, but even then, many expected the Briton to come away with the win.

In the end, the bout was controversially scored a split decision draw. Hopefully, we get a more decisive result in 2020.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan had nothing but praise for WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder following the latter’s latest win.

Wilder retained his title following an emphatic seventh-round come-from-behind knockout of Luis Ortiz in their rematch on Saturday night. In the process, the American further consolidated his claim as one of the heaviest hitters in the sport’s history, especially given how he was being dominated for much of the fight.

Rogan heaped praise on “The Bronze Bomber” following the fight as he struggled to think of a harder puncher:

“My god what a puncher! @bronzebomber might be the biggest heavyweight puncher in the history of the sport. Beautifully set up, perfect execution and otherworldly power. What a great time for the heavyweight division.”

In a second post, Rogan posted a video of the knockout:

“I mean, seriously… who the f*ck has EVER punched harder than @bronzebomber? Couldn’t be a nicer guy, too. Just amazing.”

It’s hard to think of a harder puncher as Wilder has knocked down each and every one of his opponents. Of course, the only man to survive his power is lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

That looks set to be the next fight for both men as well.

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has a good idea of what his next two fights will be.

Wilder retained his title following a seventh-round knockout of Luis Ortiz in their rematch last night. It was all the more impressive considering the American was getting outclassed for majority of the fight until he landed a straight right than floored Ortiz with seconds remaining in the round.

He now has his sights set on another rematch with Tyson Fury. The unbeaten heavyweights fought in December last year in what was eventually ruled a controversial split decision draw. However, it now looks like everything is leading to a sequel in February.

After that, Wilder wants to unify the belts with the winner of Andy Ruiz vs. Anthony Joshua:

“Well my next (opponent), of course, we have Tyson Fury in a rematch next,” Wilder said after the fight (via BJ Penn). “When it’s settled, it’s set to be done in February. So we’ll see how that goes.

“And then after that, I’m looking for a unification bout. I want one champion, one face, one name, and he goes by the name of Deontay Wilder. The heavyweight division is too small to have so many belts lingering around. There should be just one champion. It’s too confusing for the fans, you know? And I think I’m the perfect man for that job.”

Wilder had been campaigning for a title unification fight for a while when Joshua was the unified champion. Maybe we could finally see it happen in 2020?

What did you think of Wilder’s performance last night? Do you think he’ll get through Fury?

The combat sports world has been left in awe of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s power yet again.

Last night (Sat. November 23, 2019), Wilder put his strap up for grabs against Luis Ortiz in a heavyweight main event from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a rematch of their initial bout from March of 2018, where Wilder, who battled through adversity and was nearly finished himself, pulled off a late TKO win in the 10th round.

In the rematch last night in Vegas, Wilder – although taking some crips shots from the Cuban – fought a much more calculated fight, picking his shots carefully. The gameplan paid off, as Wilder landed a clean right hand down the middle that planted Ortiz down to the floor. Ortiz, who was seemingly rendered unconscious for several seconds, was unable to get to his feet before the 10 count.

Wilder was declared the winner via knockout with seconds left to go in the seventh round. It was yet another amazing display of his once-in-a-lifetime power, and laid the groundwork for an eventual rematch with Tyson Fury in 2020. Wilder’s performance got the combat sports world buzzing, as they took to Twitter to react to the finish.

Here’s what they had to say.

What did you make of Wilder’s big knockout win over Ortiz?
