Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida is not happy, and he has a good reason to be. USADA announced last week that Machida has been suspended for 18 months due to an anti-doping violation. Machida did declare his usage of a product containing the banned substance 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is a steroid, during that sample collection back in April. Machida also confirmed the use of the product and said he did not know it contained a prohibited drug. Once his sample was tested, it came back with an elevated 7?-hydroxy-DHEA to DHEA ratio. USADA said in a statement that Machida’s admission of the substance and his cooperation in the investigation allowed for the reduction of a two-year suspension to 18 months.

Machida recently spoke with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour about his suspension.

“First of all, I want to say that I am very disappointed in USADA. I think this is all extremely unfair. I take the blame for 7-Keto. It wasn’t a banned substance since I bought it over the counter in a supplement store when it stated on it’s label 60 vegetarian capsules. For me, USADA didn’t give us proper instructions and I think they failed in educating us about everything. To be honest, they only sent me a list of banned supplements after my suspension, two days later. But before, when it was supposed to be, it didn’t happen. When UFC brought USADA in, I thought it was to instruct and educate all the fighters. Instead they came in to punish in an unreasonable fashion. So they came to the academy and I explained everything and disclosed everything during the test. I didn’t know it was banned substance. Unfortunately, they didn’t see my honesty.”

Machida explained why he was actually taking the substance – for stress relief after going on a two fight losing streak (Luke Rockhold at UFC on FOX 15 and Yoel Romero at UFC Fight Night 70).

“I came from two losses in a row. It was very hard training at that moment and (I was) so stressed. I used that for stress relief. I didn’t know that. My intention was in a good way. How could I take this supplement to the fight if I know it was banned? How? Somebody on a good conscience didn’t do that at all. I took the supplement. I have two witness when I took it in my room and I knew that I would get blood tested anytime. I took them because I didn’t know. So, I take the blame, made mistake. Okay, I get it. But I think it was extremely unfair to punish me like that.”

His suspension is retroactive to April 8, 2016, so that means that Machida will be eligible to fight again in October 2017.

After releasing a lengthy statement regarding his 18-month suspension for violating the USADA Anti-Doping Policy implemented by the UFC, former 205-pound champion Lyoto Machida spoke with Ariel Helwani about the matter during his appearance on Monday’s edition of “The MMA Hour” at MMAFighting.com.

“When the UFC brought USADA in, I thought it was to instruct and educate all the fighters,” Machida said on Monday. “But instead they came in to punish in a very unreasonable fashion.

Machida continued, expressing his disappointment in USADA for their decision to suspend him 18-months for a violating of the policy, which he claims was a result of an over-the-counter supplement he had taken.

“I want to say that I’m very disappointed in USADA,” said Machida. “I think it is all extremely unfair. I take the blame for taking 7-keto. It was banned substance, since I bought it over the counter at a supplement store, when it stated on its label 60 vegetarian capsules.

“For me, USADA didn’t give us proper instruction, and I think they failed in giving us an education about everything. So, they only sent me a proper list of banned supplements after they decided on my suspension, so they sent me maybe two-to-three days later, they sent me the list of the supplements so I could understand everything. But before it was where it was supposed to be, it didn’t happen.”

Lyoto Machida Issues Lengthy Statement Regarding His 18-Month USADA Suspension

As noted, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida was handed down an 18-month suspension by USADA for his violation of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy earlier this year.

On Friday afternoon, Machida took to social media to comment on the ruling, which will keep him on the sidelines for the remainder of his 30s, as the 38-year-old MMA veteran will officially be “middle-aged” at 40 years old by the time his suspension expires.

Below is the complete statement the former UFC title-holder issued via his official Facebook page regarding his suspension:

I received a suspension from USADA with my head held up high, even though I don’t agree with it.

I reiterate that I never had any problem in all my career and always collaborated with USADA. I hoped that the fact that I spontaneously declared which substance I ingested would be taken into consideration. I have always been an honest and transparent person, something that I learned since a young age from my father Yoshizo.

The supplement I took, 7-Keto, can be sold anywhere, which reforces the fact that it’s not used for performance enhancement. As I said before, I took it to lower stress levels, as I was coming off two losses and had not fought in some time. By no means did I imagine that the substance could be banned by USADA. The information relayed to the athletes were insufficient. The full list of all prohibited supplements, in an easier way to read, I only received via text message, this week, on the day after my suspension. The previous formats were not clear. To teach and educate should also be the duties of an institution that is committed to the advancement of a clean sport and not only for punishing.

Unfortunately USADA did not see my honesty, which was always my priority. I believe that if I had been tried by the athletic commission I would have been heard and would have had a different outcome.

I live now, more than ever, through the teachings of my father summarized by the Japanese trial NASEBA NARU, which means, “Where there is will, there is a way.” Whenever my father faced a difficult situation and asked my grandfather about how to face it, the answer was always the same: you must just believe, work hard and not give up in face of any obstacles.

That is why all of my attention is turned to the new Machida Karate gym I opened in Lomita, California, along with my brother Chinzo. I have a degree in Physical Education, I am a martial artist and it has been a pleasure to pass along the principles that I learned and value. I am teaching class and want to pass not only technique, but the moral values that I have carried since a young age, to the kids and teenagers who will train at the gym, including honesty and professional ethics. Our Machida Karate philosophy is to always have truth and respect above all.

So, I keep on training, because training is my life and I will not interrupt my training at any time. I thank my fans for the support and reiterate my desire to return to the Octagon.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida was pulled from his scheduled UFC on FOX 19 bout with Dan Henderson in April after he tested positive for a banned substance. USADA announced on Wednesday that Machida has been suspended for 18 months due to an anti-doping violation. His suspension is retroactive to April 8, 2016, so that means that Machida will be eligible to fight again in October 2017.

USADA issued the following:

“During an out-of-competition test conducted on April 8, 2016, Machida, 38, declared the use of a product containing 7?keto-dehydroepiandrosterone (7?keto?DHEA) on his sample collection paperwork. 7?keto?DHEA is a prohibited substance in the class of Anabolic Agents and prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the WADA Prohibited List,” USADA officials wrote in the release.

“Upon notice from USADA of his potential violation, Machida immediately confirmed his use of the product, which listed 7-keto-DHEA as an ingredient, and fully cooperated with the subsequent investigation after advising USADA that he did not realize 7-keto-DHEA was a prohibited substance when he used the product.”

“Machida’s sample was analyzed at a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory and reported to USADA for an elevated 7?-hydroxy-DHEA to DHEA ratio, which is consistent with his declared use of a prohibited substance.”

Machida (22-7) has lost his last two bouts (Luke Rockhold at UFC on FOX 15 and Yoel Romero at UFC Fight Night 70). Machida remains one of the most well-respected competitors in the UFC and is surely a future Hall of Fame candidate.
