UFC light heavyweight Ion Cutelaba has tested positive for COVID-19 and therefore been forced out of his eagerly-anticipated rematch against Magomed Ankalaev.

Igor Lazorin first reported the news which was later confirmed by MMA Fighting. Cutelaba’s manager, Tiago Okamura says his fighter is currently in quarantine and they hope to rebook the bout against Ankalaev for August 29. Although the possibility remains that the UFC could opt to find the Russian a late-notice opponent to keep UFC 252 as strong as possible.

Ankalaev and Cutelaba previously squared off at UFC Norfolk in February in an exciting match-up. However, it came to a controversial end early on as referee Kevin MacDonald stopped the fight after deeming Cutelaba unable to continue. Ankalaev had rocked the Moldovan and was pouring on the pressure. Cutelaba was clearly not 100 percent but he was still avoiding strikes while fighting back. When the fight was stopped, Cutelaba protested immediately while the fans started booing the decision.

Cutelaba appealed the loss but it was denied. The promotion rebooked the fight for UFC 249 but it fell apart due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Now the fight has fallen through once again due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Cutelaba holds notable UFC wins over the likes of Khalil Rountree and Gadzhimurad Antigulov. He has previously fallen short against Glover Teixeira and Jared Cannonier. The 26-year-old is currently eight fights into his UFC career during which he has won four and lost four.

Ankalaev is 4-1 in the UFC with wins over Marcin Prachnio, Klidson Abreu, Dalcha Lungiambula and Cutelaba. He is currently ranked #13 in the UFC light heavyweight division. The Russian prospect’s lone UFC defeat came against Paul Craig who scored a last-second submission against him back in 2018.

Ion Cutelaba faces Maogmed Ankalaev

UFC light-heavyweight Ion Cutelaba has had the appeal against his TKO defeat to Magomed Ankalaev at UFC Norfolk denied.

In the fight, Ankalaev opened up early in round one throwing a series of high kicks that appeared to be doing damage to Cutelaba. Despite the fact Cutelaba was still standing referee Kevin MacDonald stepped in and stopped the fight after just 38 seconds. The Moldavian fighter reacted angrily to the stoppage and one look at the replay tells you exactly why.

On second viewing it’s clear to see Cutelaba is blocking a lot of what his opponent is throwing at him and is still intelligently defending himself. Speaking backstage post-fight Cutelaba was still furious about the stoppage and claimed acting hurt was part of his game plane, he told MMA Fighting.

”I came all the way from Moldova, 14 or 15, to show the world I am the best, and the referee didn’t leave me to fight,” Cutelaba explained. “Every (strike) that my opponent did, I controlled it. When the referee stopped the fight, I was countering. This was a part of the game plan, and the referee thought I fell. But that was part of the game plan. When they stopped it, I was fighting him.

Speaking later on social media Cutelaba announced he would be appealing the TKO loss at the earliest opportunity, he wrote.

“First thing monday morning we will be talking to the commission to make the appeal. Hopefully they see What all fans watching tonight saw and correct this injustice.Thank YOU for your support!”

Two months on and his appeal has been denied according to Ariel Helwani of ESPN.

“Ankalaev stoppage in Virginia back in February? Cutelaba’s team appealed the TKO stoppage and found out today their appeal was denied, I’m told. It will remain a TKO win for Ankalaev. They were supposed to rematch at 249. TBD now.”

UFC light heavyweight Ion Cutelaba was understandably disappointed at how his fight with Magomed Ankalaev ended.

The pair competed on the main card of UFC Norfolk on Saturday night with Ankalaev rocking Cutelaba early on in the first round. Although Cutelaba was wobbled, he was still in the fight and was countering with strikes despite being hurt.

Unfortunately, the referee saw enough and called an end to the fight with Cutelaba seemingly okay right away as he protested immediately while the fans started booing.

Many have since labeled it the worst stoppage in UFC history and Cutelaba believes the fans were robbed off a good fight:

”When it’s two fighters on this level and they came here to fight and show the world a good fight, it doesn’t matter, one round, three rounds, 40 seconds – let them fight,” Cutelaba said backstage (via MMA Fighting). “That referee, he doesn’t know how to do that. They have to (have) another referee to control this kind of fight.”

As for being wobbled, the Moldovan was simply playing possum as he revealed it was part of the game plan to get Ankalaev to engage him more. He also adds that he was controlling every strike Ankalaev threw on him during the sequence:

”I came all the way from Moldova, 14 or 15, to show the world I am the best, and the referee didn’t leave me to fight,” Cutelaba explained. “Every (strike) that my opponent did, I controlled it. When the referee stopped the fight, I was countering. This was a part of the game plan, and the referee thought I fell. But that was part of the game plan.

”When they stopped it, I was fighting him.”

Cutelaba later took to social media where he revealed that he would be appealing the loss on Monday:

“First thing monday morning we will be talking to the commission to make the appeal. Hopefully they see What all fans watching tonight saw and correct this injustice.Thank YOU for your support!”

A rematch appears to be the only option at this point.
