British referee Marc Goddard has revealed he received an incredible amount of abuse and even death threats in the aftermath of UFC 245.

The veteran fight official was the man in the middle as Kamaru Usman defended his welterweight title against Colby Covington. In the fifth and final round of the fight of the year candidate, Usman poured it on dropping his opponent. Goddard stepped in and waved off the fight, to the displeasure of Covington and his fans who believed he was robbed by the referee.

Speaking to the Score after the fight, Covington said. “How f*cking stupid are you Marc Goddard? Get a new job because you f*cking suck at your job you piece of sh*t. And stay in England, don’t come back to America you f*cking c*cksucker.”

“I promise
you Marc Goddard will not come within 10 feet of me in the same room of
anything I ever do in my life without getting smacked and without getting a
wedgie upside his head.”

After receiving abuse and death threats since UFC 245, Goddard has finally responded during the LISTEN podcast with former UFC fighter and commentator Dan Hardy. Speaking about Covington he said the welterweights comments were totally inappropriate,” “abusive” and “threatening”.

Although disappointed with the feedback he’s received
Goddard insists he stands by his decision and will accept whatever criticism
comes his way.

“I’m a professional, I take it in
stride…Difficult fight [but] I know I handled it on the money, to a T,” Goddard
said.

“I didn’t
respond [to Covington’s comments], I didn’t have to,” he added. “Where would
that leave me? On a professional basis, I get into it with a fighter on
Twitter? I’m always going to come off worse. So, you rise above and then you
move away.”

“The abuse was incalculable from that fight. But you know what, suck it up, because you’re an official and that’s your job.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Marc Goddard was the official working the UFC 245 pay-per-view (PPV) main event between welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington.

It was a spectacular back-and-forth brawl between the two, which went into the fifth round, where “The Nigerian Nightmare” finished the bout via TKO. Midway through the fight, Usman broke Covington’s jaw. It looked like the pain became too much in the final round, as Covington was dropped before being finished on the ground.

Since, Covington has blasted Goddard for his officiating of the fight, allowing the fight to be stopped in the early rounds due to a questionable low-blow, as well as a questionable eye poke. Covington also believes Goddard stepping in to stop the fight when he did was a bit unjust. Responding on “Listen!” with Dan Hardy, Goddard said he thinks he officiated that fight “on the money.” (H/T MMA Junkie)

“(It was a) difficult fight. I know I handled it on the money, to a T,” Goddard said. “I’m seeing things unfold, and I see Colby put down twice in rapid order – plus 24 minutes of back-and-forth before that. So there’s a lot of damage sustained. Then I see him go down, and obviously he stays in that turtle position started on the double, then pulling his hands back.

“This is where everything will narrow in for me. I’m now firmly put in the spotlight. I have a decision to make and I’m trying to assess this. I have to assess this, real time, with everything I saw, etc.”

Just a week later, Goddard was under fire again for his officiating of the Chan Sung Jung vs. Frankie Edgar main event at UFC Busan. Jung delivered some nasty punishment to Edgar, finishing him in the first round. However, many argued that the fight could’ve been stopped earlier than when it was.

As for why he stopped the Edgar fight later than the Covington fight, Goddard explained that Edgar wasn’t in a 24-minute brawl beforehand.

“I’m looking at Colby, and then I see the damage he’s sustained, the two knockdowns, etc.,” Goddard said. “When you are face down, when I can’t see you, I can’t read you. It’s difficult for me to … that exasperates everything further. So I’m now trying to compute in my mind: ‘Are you there, (or) are you not?’

“Could I have let that fight go on? Yeah. Could have I stood back and let it go on? Yeah. Should I have let it? And that’s the narrative here. Should I have? And that’s the point I make when I’m assessing what happened, assessing the position he’s in: two knockdowns, (and) he’s being punched.”

Colby Covington Blasts Marc Goddard For Poor UFC 245 Officiating, Calls For Usman Rematch

Colby Covington continues to blame referee Marc Goddard for calling his fight with Kamaru Usman early.

Covington and Usman battled in a back-and-forth war in their welterweight title fight at UFC 245 in December. However, it was Usman who was able to get the victory after dropping Covington twice in the fifth round.

With Usman landing strikes on a downed Covington, Goddard saw enough as he called an end to the action. Many felt it was a slightly premature stoppage, including “Chaos” who unloaded on Goddard after the fight.

Covington also believes Goddard gave Usman an unfair advantage by giving him time to recover from fake illegal shots earlier on in the fight. He expanded more in a recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday:

“Let’s talk about the 5th round. I’m beating his a** again,” Covington said. “I’ve won the whole entire fight, the fight’s mine. They’re about to wrap the welterweight championship around my waist. Then all of a sudden, I slip on a banana peel and I’m getting hit in the back of the head. Marc Goddard is seeing this right in front of his face. Go look at the video in the fifth round.

“I’m completely coherent and I cover up the back of my head. And when I cover the back of my head, he calls the fight. I stand right up and protest, ‘what are you doing? Why are you calling the fight? I’m winning the whole entire fight. There’s less than a minute left in the fight.’ You see a foul right in front of your face and you call it. Then when you don’t see a foul in front of your face, you give him time and you throw him a life raft in the river when he’s drowning.

“That’s why he’s named Marc not so Goodard and he shouldn’t be a ref ever again. I feel bad for all the people who ever had to deal with him as a ref. Look at the next week — Frankie Edgar had to die in a fight just because Marc Goddard was trying to do a makeup call because he f*cked it up and did such a bad job in the fight between me and Marty Fakenewsman.”

His feelings towards Goddard aside, Covington feels it’s only right for the UFC to book a rematch between him and Usman. If that doesn’t happen, he believes it’s a corrupt business:

“They need to run this back,” he added.”There’s 10 more rounds in this, Ariel. Everybody knows that — there’s going to be a sequel and there’s going to be a trilogy to this. Marty Fakenewsman is the only one in the world who doesn’t want this fight.

“The people want this fight. I am the people’s champ for a reason and I fight for the people. But Marc not so Goodard robbed the people of a fair fight. He robbed the fight of a fight down the middle. This needs to be ran back and if it’s not run back, it’s a very corrupt business and it’s a fix.”

British referee Marc Goddard was the man in the middle as Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington went to war for the welterweight belt at UFC 245 on Saturday night.

After four hard rounds the fight was in the balance heading into the fifth and final round. The champion Usman showed an extra gear in that round and badly dropped his opponent on two occasions, before landing some ground and pound.

Covington was trying to defend himself and covering up well despite nursing a broken jaw. However Goddard took a close look and jumped in to stop the fight, leaving the challenger furious with the referee. He didn’t even stick around to hear the official result.

In his only post-fights comments Covington slammed Goddard for his poor officiating during the fight, accused the Englishman of f*cking him and also labelled him a fake ref.

“Normally people
do their f*cking in the bedroom, not the octagon @marcgoddard_uk! I go in there
to kill or be killed. You robbed me of that. You robbed the people of a fair
fight. You should be ashamed of yourself. Fake nut shot. Fake eye poke. Fake
stoppage. Fake ref. #ufc245”

The MMA community and fans appeared split on Goddards call. The veteran referee has now spoke out about his decision and his overall work in the fight game.

“Raw emotion
& the highest of stakes, fighting is like nothing else on earth. I respect
each & every person I stand between & I will give you all I’ve got. I
am a human being. Thank you to all who understand what I have put into this
game, that will never stop. God bless.
