UFC Fight Night 111 emanated from Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore this morning (Saturday, June 17, 2017). The headliner saw former bantamweight champion Holly Holm try to right the ship against former title challenger Bethe Correia. She did so in emphatic fashion.

After a slow-paced first two rounds, referee Marc Goddard warned both Holm and Correia for timidity, calling for more action. It came early in the third. Correia waved Holm on, and Holm obliged, throwing a question mark kick that dropped Correia to her seat. One follow-up punch on the dazed Brazilian put her out completely, giving Holm the much-needed victory.

In the co-main event, former heavyweight titlist Andrei Arlovski looked to halt his own losing streak against up-and-comer Marcin Tybura. He would not be as lucky.

Tybura caught a kick from Arlovski in the opening frame, advanced position, and dropped ground and pound for the second half of the round. But Arlovski hung tough and gutted it out, even climbing to his feet and hurting the exhausted Pole in the closing seconds. Round two was slow-paced as both men were very tired, Arlovski for absorbing a bad beating and Tybura for dishing it out. “Tybur” would get a critical takedown in the third round and ride out the rest of the round in dominant positions. He didn’t have enough left in the tank to go for the finish, however. He had to settle for a unanimous decision victory, while Arlovski fell to 0-5 in his last five fights.

The UFC announced several bouts for their return event to Singapore after a three and a half year absence. UFC Fight Night 111 is scheduled to take place in the country this summer, and five bouts were recently announced.

Former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski (25-14) will fight Marcin Tybura (15-2) at the event. Also announced for the event is Asian MMA legend Takanori Gomi (35-12) taking on Jon Tuck (9-4) at lightweight; Ulka Sasaki (19-4-2) meets Justin Scoggins (11-3) in a flyweight bout; Russell Doane (14-7) and Kwan Ho Kwak (9-1) throw down at bantamweight; and Cyril Asker (8-2) meets Walt Harris (9-5) in a heavyweight bout. Despite all of these bouts being announced, the UFC has yet to officially announce the main and co-main events for this show.

Arlovski really needs a win as after he returned to the UFC in 2014, he rattled off four straight wins but has had a rough run as of late as he has knockout losses to Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem. He is coming off a loss to Francis Ngannou at UFC on FOX 23 in January by TKO.

Tybura lost his promotional debut to Timothy Johnson 10 months ago but has been on fire since then as he won his last two bouts by knocking out Viktor Pesta at UFC Fight Night 92 this past August, and Luis Henrique at UFC 209 in Las Vegas.

UFC Fight Night 11 takes place on June 17th Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. The UFC has yet to announce the broadcast plans for the event, but it will likely air on FOX Sports 1. Here is the updated card for the event:

Andrei Arlovski vs. Marcin Tybura

Takanori Gomi vs. Jon Tuck

Ulka Sasaki vs. Justin Scoggins

Russell Doane vs. Kwan Ho Kwak

Cyril Asker vs. Walt Harris

Wang Guan vs. TBA

When the UFC announced that its UFC Manilla card was scrapped altogether after UFC legend BJ Penn pulled out of his return bout against Ricardo Lamas in the scheduled main event, the fighters involved on the card were devastated that they would be losing a payday.

One such fighter who was left standing in the dust of the cancelled card was No. 10-ranked Derrick Lewis who was set to take on Marcin Tybura in the co-main event of the evening.

Lewis recently spoke with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour regarding the cancelled card, courtesy of MMA Fighting, and revealed that he was alerted of the news after being woken up with multiple missed calls from his manager:

“They woke me out of my sleep,” he said. “I had like missed calls from my manager, and he told me he had bad news. I thought my opponent got hurt or something like that. He broke it down to me and said the whole card got cancelled. And I was just pissed. I said, ‘are they still going to pay me?’ He said he don’t know, that we were going to talk about it this week.

“I said, there ain’t no talking about it, let me call Dana White or somebody to pay me, because I don’t already don’t like flying don’t make me come all the way over here for nothing. So we’re still waiting. I haven’t anything from nobody.”

Although the UFC promised it would compensate the fighters for their inconvenience after the card was cancelled, Lewis believes his promotion will only compensate him for his stay in Manilla, leaving him with no profit off the trip:

“I don’t like that compensated stuff,” he said. “I’m thinking they are just going to pay me for all the little taxi cab rides I had to spend and the hotel and probably the plane tickets, and that’s not enough. I cut a lot of weight. I cut like 30 pounds for this fight. I was hurting man, you know, I wanted to eat. I wanted some chicken and I couldn’t eat. I was suffering.”

Lewis, who was visibly disgruntled over the entire situation, stated that he’ll be content just receiving the show money he was set to make’ and he’ll get it at any cost necessary:

“Hell, just give me my show money, just at least give me half of it. That’s what I want, I’ll be satisfied,” he said.

“Either I’m going to get it and either they’re going to hand it to me in my hands, or somebody’s going to have to pay for it.”

“Yeah I’ll call him,” he said. “I don’t got [a relationship with White], but my manager, I’d make somebody give me his number and either I’ll call him or I’ll show up at his doorstep, either one. Somebody’s going to pay me.”

Derrick Lewis has since been rescheduled to headline the UFC Fight Night 102 card later this year against Shamil Abdurakhimov, live on UFC Fight Pass from the Times Union Center in Albany, New York on December 9, 2016.
