Round 1:

John Cholish vs. Mitch Clarke

Round 1: They exchange feints in the early seconds, then Cholish jumps into a short left hook from Clarke. Cholish seems to be looking for the takedown, but Clarke is fending him off well early on. Stiff jab from Cholish. Clarke jabs in from too far out and eats a counter right. Cholish manages a foot sweep, but Clarke is up in a hurry and looking for a suplex. Cholish defends and rolls, putting Clarke on his back and going to work from his guard. Cholish stands up out of the guard and thinks about attacking from there, but settles for letting Clarke up with less than two minutes left in the round. Clarke is the busier man on the feet, but he’s not landing much. He misses with two punches and Cholish stings him with a right. Clarke stuffs a Cholish takedown in the final ten seconds, but it’s still likely Cholish’s round. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Cholish.

Mark BocekThe recently announced UFC 140 continues to take shape, with the addition of a lightweight bout added on Tuesday.

Just confirmed by the promotion, Nik Lentz takes on Mark Bocek in a match featuring grappling specialists.

Lentz (21-3-2, 1 no contest) will return to the octagon for the first time since being hit with an illegal knee by Charles Oliveira in a match that was ultimately ruled a no contest.

Lentz has yet to lose in seven UFC bouts, though he’s had two matches end with unsatisfying conclusions: the previously mentioned no contest, as well as a January 2010 draw against Thiago Tavares.

Prior to the no contest bout against Oliveira in June, he’d won four straight, including a guillotine choke submission over Waylon Lowe, his first finish in the UFC.

Bocek (9-4) is an aggressive submission specialist who has earned seven of his career wins via tapout. He’s gone 1-2 in his last three fights, sandwiching a triangle choke win over Dustin Hazelett between decision losses to top lightweights Jim Miller and Ben Henderson.

UFC 140 will take place on December 10 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. It will be the promotion’s first time back in the city since selling out the 55,000 seat Rogers Centre for April’s UFC 129.

Among the other bouts agreed to for the event are Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira II, Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Dennis Hallman vs. John Makdessi, and Rory MacDonald vs. Brian Ebersole.

Helwani Interviews Marquardt, Twitter Asplodes

“Doc comes back and says, ‘Nate, you have the testosterone levels of a 35 year old man,’ and I just broke down. ‘Doc,’ I told him, ‘I’m only 32! Is there anything you can do to help me?’

You have to hand it to the team at MMAFighting for nailing down the exclusive with Nate Marquardt yesterday. Everybody wanted to talk to him, but it was Ariel Helwani who welcomed Marquardt and manager Lex McMahon to the microphone for a heart to heart. Mike Chiappetta provided the Cliff’s Notes version of the interview to get the ball rolling on Twitter, and the discussion quickly took off.

The short interview was dissected and commented upon in real time on Twitter, and the reactions continued throughout the evening. What follows is only a *small* sampling of Twitter’s response to Nate’s release and the subject of Hormone Replacement in MMA. Keep in mind that Marquardt already has a Twitter dedicated to getting him back in the UFC, and a matching hashtag #BringNateBack that saw plenty of use yesterday as well.

It was also interesting to note that a lot of Zuffa fighters were unwilling to touch the subject. Usual Tweeting suspects were strangely silent on the hot topic; take from that what you will. On the other hand, there were a few fighters who had some choice words on the subject, and they did not beat around the bush.

Go ahead and wade through this collection of Tweets from yesterday, and then share your expert analysis and vital opinion in the comments. Is Nate a good guy that has made some bad choices? Is he a nefarious schemer looking to get any advantage he can? What about the larger issue of HRT/TRT/PEDs in MMA? Should Dana continue to clean house until fighters learn to stay away from anything questionable? Should athletic commissions just legalize everything from horse steroids to heroin?

After all, PRIDE was awesome, right?

George St Pierre vs Jake Shields

If you take the Dan Henderson vs Jake Shields fight and remember that Henderson had Jake in bad places early in that fight before tiring out and laying on the ground for a few rounds. Now imagine if Henderson had crisp clean striking, cardio for days, a game plan, speed, and a sick ground game. If you can imagine that then you can see George St Pierre easily winning this fight.

If this fight turns into a grappling game, Shields probably has a minor edge. If this stays on the feet, Shields has no chance and I mean NONE. I like St. Pierre even with the heavy favorite roll.

Jose Aldo vs Mark Hominick

Despite me thinking Aldo will likely win, Hominick is an excellent bet at +295. He won’t have reach, he won’t have speed, and he won’t have variety that Aldo brings. However, all it takes is one punch and Hominick carries his own sack of power. I like Hominick here as a value play.

Vladimir Matyushenko vs Jason Brilz

Perfect matchup here for these two stocky brawny wrestlers. I like Matyushenko here.

Randy Couture vs Lyoto Machida

If Randy beats Machida, he should end on a high note. He is coming in as a heavy underdog against Machida on the early line of -330 over at Intertops.

Machida has problems on his back. Can Randy take him down and beat him for 3 rounds? Yes I THINK SO.

If Randy stands with Machida it will be a short night. Machida’s style tends to take awhile to unravel. Randy tends to get better over the course of multiple rounds. Both fighters styles will have them meeting and peaking near the end of the fight and should make for an entertaining matchup.

I like Randy in this fight in the heavy underdog position.

Mark Bocek vs Ben Henderson

This is such a tough one to call. I think I’m running with Bocek here in his backyard.

Preliminary card (Spike TV)

Nate Diaz vs Rory MacDonald

Awesome fight. Rory can hit and take big hits. Problem is he’s been KO’d a decent amount now and it seems to be happening easier. Not only that he doesn’t have the ground game of Nate Diaz, not even close.

I like Diaz to win at any odds.

Sean Pierson vs Brian Foster

Pass

Preliminary Card

Claude Patrick vs Daniel Roberts

Daniel Roberts

Ivan Menjivar vs Charlie Valencia

Ivan Menjivar

Jason MacDonald vs Ryan Jensen

MacDonald back in the UFC. A one time title contender taking on the up and coming Ryan Jensen. Jensen’s wrestling and ground work as well as submission defense is good. MacDonald is decent everywhere, but best on the ground. MacDonald is probably an underdog, but I don’t see it on the early lines.

I like MacDonald to win here regardless.

John Makdessi vs Kyle Watson

The card for the UFC’s first Ontario show is coming together nicely.

According to various sources, a pair of lightweight and one welterweight bout have been penciled in for the April 30 show at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

MMAJunkie reports that former WEC 155-pound champ Ben Henderson and Canadian grappling standout Mark Bocek will square off on the main card ahead of the co-main event showdowns between former UFC light heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Lyoto Machida and UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre and former Strikeforce middleweight champ Jake Shields.

Sportsnet.com is claiming that TUF 12 winner Jonathan Brookins will compete on the card as well opposite undefeated Quebec fighter John "The Bull" Makdessi and that promising Canadian welterweight Rory MacDonald will also take on TUF 9 champ James Wilks.
