As the UFC continues to expand its horizons in a post covid landscape, the promotion takes a trip to San Diego with an electric bantamweight main event. Former 135lb champion Dominick Cruz is set to take on surging contender Marlon Vera in the headlining bout, a fight that may well decide the next No.1 contender in the division.

The card is full of interesting matchups although there is not a tremendous amount of value on a single ML play. As a result, two of our three recommended bets this week will actually be parlay pieces.

Join us at LowKickMMA as we break down some of the fights from UFC San Deigo, and try to make some money in the process.

Youssef Zalal ML

One single ML play we will take is on Youssef Zalal to defeat Da’mon Blackshear. Zalal is making the move down to 135lbs for the first time in his UFC tenure. ‘The Moroccan Devil’ was initially set to take on Cristian Quiñonez, however, after the Mexican dropped out, Blackshear was brought in on short notice.

Blackshear is admittedly riding an impressive four-fight winning streak, with all four victories coming under the CFFC banner. However, whenever Blackshear has come across opposition on a similar level to Zalal, he is fallen short. Losses to Danny Sabatello, Pat Sabatini and Kris Moutinho all mar his record.

Zalal has a good build for the 135lb division, which paired with his speed and high work rate will likely be enough to outwork Blackshear over three rounds. We will take Youssef Zalal’s ML, which Betway have priced at 1.72.

Lupita Godinez ML & Calvillo vs. Nunes O1.5

For our second bet, we are parlaying two main card bouts.

First is Lupita Godinez to defeat Angela Hill. Godinez has looked sensational as of late, racking up three wins in her last four bouts. The Mexico-born strawweight is an elite chain wrestler who can cause her opponents endless trouble when the fight hits the mats. She takes on Angela Hill, in a fight that came together on relatively short notice. Hill is as game as they come, but has struggled against strong opponents with heavy wrestle-based games in the past.

The second leg of this parlay is for the flyweight bout between Cynthia Calvillo and Nina Nunes to go past the first round and a half. This one is a simple pick, just to boost the odds up in our favor. Nina Nunes has gone to the third round in seven of her last right, whilst Cynthia Calvillo has gone to the third in eight of her last nine (debatably seven as she retired at the end of the second round against Angela Lee with a broken hand).

By pairing these bets together, we have a solid 1.67 line on Betway.

Bruno Silva ML & Cruz vs. Vera O2.5

Our third bet for UFC San Diego is yet another parlay.

First is a straight play on Bruno Silva. ‘Blindado’ is a monster of a middleweight, with brutal knockout power and an iron chin. Currently 3-1 in the UFC with his only loss coming against the next title challenger Alex Pereira, Bruno Silva is a problem for any man. This weekend he takes on UFC veteran Gerald Meerschaert, a slick submission specialist with nine finishes inside the UFC. However, Meerschaert has repeatedly struggled with heavy-hitting opponents, suffering KO losses to Ian Heinisch, Thiago Santos and Khamzat Chimaev. There are few that hit harder than Silva, and as a result, a KO, or at least multiple round winning moments, seem inevitable.

Second, we take the main event to go over two and a half rounds. Dominick Cruz is an expert at fighting to the distance, whether it be over three or five rounds. Over the course of his time with the UFC and WEC, he has gone to the judges 13 out of 17 times. He is immensely durable but doesn’t contain one-punch knockout power in his hands. Marlon Vera is one of the few fighters in the division who boasts a similar level of durability. He also has a tendency of starting slow, only turning up the pressure in the later rounds. This fight may end inside the distance, but it seems more than likely that this would only happen in the championship rounds.

A two-piece parlay of Bruno Silva’s ML and Cruz vs. Vera to go over two and a half rounds is priced at 1.75 on Betway.

Dominick Cruz

Dominick Cruz took aim at fellow analyst and commentator Daniel Cormier for a second time now.

Cruz has an upcoming match this weekend against Marlon Vera, in the headlining bout at Fight Night: San Diego. Cruz is looking to make another run for the bantamweight title, but the road goes through one of the most dangerous strikers in the division, Marlon Vera.

‘Chito’ is coming off three very impressive wins in a row. He has beaten Frankie Edgar, Davey Grant, and Rob Font on his way to securing a top five position in the division. Cruz is coming into the fight with an undefeated record in non title fights. Although Cruz has been in the UFC since 2011, Vera still has 10 more fights in the UFC, since joining in 2014. Mostly being because of Cruz’s issues with injuries since he has been in the UFC. Cruz has had multiple ACL tears, to go along with a long list of nagging injuries.

Dominick Cruz sounded off on ‘DC’ in a pre-fight interview

Cruz had originally thrown shade at the former two division champion back in December, before he fought Pedro Munhoz at UFC 269. He had claimed then that he didn’t believe Cormier watched any tape before the fights. This led to Cormier and Cruz both sitting down and talking out their differences in a YouTube video.

This time around, Cruz was asked if he believes that ‘DC’ watches more film now.

“Doubt it. Doubtful, but again, learned to let go of control. ‘DC’ is ‘gonna do ‘DC’. He’s good, I call him the “Golden Fluffer”. Whatever you want to hear, he will say it and he will make you love him. That’s hit gift, gift of gab.”

Do you think Cruz beats Vera this weekend? Does he have a chance to be the bantamweight champion once again?

Marlon Vera

Streaking UFC bantamweight contender, Marlon Vera has blasted former undisputed and interim division titleholder, Petr Yan – accusing the Dudinka native of rejecting this weekend’s UFC San Diego headlining slot against him, labelling the former gold holder a “fat c*nt” in his attempt to delay the bout.

Currently, in the midst of an impressive three-fight winning run, Marlon Vera occupies the #5 rank in the official bantamweight pile, off the back of a one-sided unanimous decision success against Rob Font back in April. The bout earned both Vera and Font Fight of the Night honors.

As for Yan, the former undisputed champion attempts to snap a run of two consecutive losses to rival and current division pacesetter, Aljamain Sterling – failing to successfully unify the bantamweight crowns at UFC 273 back in April. The Russian technician returns at UFC 280 in October against the surging, Sean O’Malley in a high-profile Abu Dhabi, UAE showdown.

For Vera, the RUCA (stylised as RVCA) mainstay continues in his headlining form this weekend, taking main event status against former two-time division titleholder, Dominick Cruz at UFC San Diego.

Marlon Vera claims the UFC initially offered him a fight with Petr Yan

However, Vera claims the promotion initially attempted to book him opposite Yan, before accusing the Dudinka striker of rejecting the San Diego showdown – in favor of an end-of-year matchup.

“Petr Yan, that fat c*nt, declined the fight, because he was eating pizza in Italy,” Marlon Vera told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “And he was like, “Oh, I don’t have time to make weight, I don’t have time to prepare”. If I’m that easy money, why don’t you say, ‘F*ck it, I’ll finish my slice and kick your ass”?”

“But, he declined the fight, he said he wants to fight in November, or October, so I was like, you ain’t that cool to wait for you, buddy,” Marlon Vera explained. “I want options, I wanna fight, I wanna make money. And they (the UFC) went, “Well, he declined, now we move – do you wanna fight Dominick Cruz?” I was like, “Sure, why not?” Why am I gonna lie? That’s not trash talking, that’s not beef between me and the Russian fat guy. He just didn’t have the time. He was on a little trip in Europe, good for him, dude.”

Prior to his April win over Font, Vera managed to stop former undisputed lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar with a third round front kick knockout back in November at Madison Square Garden, after avenging a prior defeat against Davey Grant.

Dominick Cruz plays down importance of MMA manager: ‘The UFC dictates sponsors and contracts’

Dominick Cruz

Former UFC bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz has played down the importance of managers, agents, and representatives in mixed martial arts – particularly for fighters under the UFC banner, claiming the promotion holds most of the cards regardless – especially with sponsorship opportunities.

Cruz, a former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion under the organization’s scrutiny, is slated to return to the Octagon this weekend – headlining UFC Fight Night San Diego against the surging Ecuadorian finisher, Marlon Vera.

In the midst of an impressive two-fight winning spree, Cruz bested Casey Kenney with a close, split decision last year – before handing Pedro Munhoz a unanimous judging loss in the featured preliminary card of UFC 269 back in December of last year.

Dominick Cruz questions what role managers in mixed martial arts play

Slated to return this weekend in a hometown matchup, Cruz shared his thoughts on the importance of representation and managers for fighters competing under the UFC banner. And admits that they’re not entirely imperative beyond initial negotiations.

“I think in the UFC, we’re signed to a six-fight contract, are we not – or a four-fight contract, usually,” Dominick Cruz said on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. “So, why would I pay somebody (a manager) for four fights, when it’s set (the contract) after one (fight)? That doesn’t make sense to me.”

“And on top of that, how are managers supposed to bring in sponsors when the UFC dictates the sponsors?” Dominick Cruz continued. “So now UFC dictates the sponsors, and UFC dictates the contract, so what is a manager actually doing?… But in the UFC, how many sponsors are even allowed in the UFC? Very few – and they’re already decided by the UFC. So the UFC sponsors who they want, and the UFC makes the contracts. … It doesn’t make sense to me.”

Twice clinching the undisputed bantamweight title, in a triumphant return from a slew of hampering injuries, Cruz defeated fellow former titleholder, T.J. Dillashaw in the main event of UFC Fight Night Boston back in January 2016.
