Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera became the first man to defeat the ultra talented, formerly undefeated ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley this past weekend at UFC 252, and he did so in a very impressive, violent fashion.

Going into the fight, O’Malley had all the hype in the world around him, and for a reason. He looked great early on against Vera, until his leg gave out and he couldn’t stay mobile.

This left many fans thinking it was somewhat of a freak accident, but it appears that it may have been a kick from Vera that made O’Malley’s leg give out after closer examining the fight.

‘Chito’ had the following to say about his fight with O’Malley and who he wants next to BJPenn.com:

“Now that the fight is over, he didn’t hurt his ankle. The x-rays came back clean. What I did to him, is basically when someone punches you in the jaw you go out. His legs went out. I don’t give a fuck what people think or say. There will always be haters. He went out. But, man if they don’t stop it I would’ve beat him worse in the second. Everyone has an opinion. It was a solid win and I am happy, I wouldn’t change anything.

“I am going to be honest, he quit. But, at the end of the day, I know my kicks are powerful and it fucked up his leg. His nerve went away when I kicked him.”

Though he defeated O’Malley via TKO in round one, many people have been calling for a rematch, but Vera has different thoughts for his next fight.

“Fuck no, fuck him. He has to go fight and prove himself. Let’s be real, he was fighting low-level competition. I want Jimmie Rivera next and that is what will happen next. There is nowhere he can run now or any excuses he can make.

“Right now, he has his back against his wall and can’t be picking his opponents. We have been scheduled to fight a couple of times, that is the fight to make. I would finish him. I will put the pace and pressure on him and I believe I finish him.”

‘Chito’ improved his professional mixed martial arts record to 16-6-1 with his win over O’Malley, and he’s now won six straight at 135 lbs. He’s 6-1 in his last seven, though the featherweight bout he had with Song Yadong back in May, literally everyone believes he won.

Nonetheless, that loss marks the sixth decision loss of his career, he’s never been finished, and he’s finished his last six wins. He’s actually finished all but one victory he’s had in the UFC. Jimmie Rivera is also a great match up for his next fight, he just returned for this first time in 13 months last month and picked up a unanimous decision victory over Cody Stamann.

Ben Askren was not a fan of Sean O’Malley’s UFC 252 performance against Marlon Vera.

In the co-main event of the card, O’Malley was set for the toughest test of his career. It was a very intriguing matchup but many favored O’Malley to get the job done. Yet, that was not the case as Vera won by first-round TKO, partly due to the fact “Sugar” injured his ankle.

“He wanted to just be out of there for whatever reason,” Askren said of O’Malley on Monday on ESPN’s DC & Helwani show (via South China Morning Post). “It’s a fist fight. Deal with it. I’m saying he shouldn’t have done that. Yes, [O’Malley] was in pain obviously. Listen, if you don’t have the expectation that you’re gonna be in pain when you get into a fist fight, you’ve got some bad expectations.”

Due to the foot injury, Sean O’Malley left the Octagon and the arena on a stretcher. That move got a lot of flack on social media by fighters and fans. For Askren, he says if someone tried to put him on a stretcher he would’ve fought someone.

Even though it is O’Malley’s first career loss, Ben Askren believes the rising star needs to grow up.

“If they tried carting me out because of an ankle injury, I would’ve fought someone over that,” Askren said of O’Malley. “You’re not putting my ass on a stretcher because I got an ankle injury. I got one other good leg, and I’m gonna hop all the way to the back. Leave me the F alone. I think he needs to grow up.

“It’s part of growing up. In life, you have failures, you have struggle,” Askren added. “You’re gonna learn from them. Obviously, he hasn’t lost a fight to this point, so he probably hasn’t experienced those really hard things and really, at this point, embarrassment also. He was building himself up and got his ass kicked by ‘Chito’ Vera. He’s probably a little embarrassed by that, as well. Hey, that’s part of it. Get up, rub some dirt on it, hop yourself to the back.”

Sean O'Malley

As we all know, ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley was injured this past weekend in his UFC 252 fight with Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera. He looked good in the fight up until the injury happened, and this marks just the first setback of his professional career.

Ariel Helwani from ESPN MMA gave us an update regarding O’Malley’s injury earlier today via his twitter account:

This is a truly unfortunate occurrence. O’Malley injured himself in his second fight in the UFC with Andre Soukhamthath as well, though that didn’t happen until round three, and he won the first two rounds. However, this injury happened midway through the first round, and Vera is far too talented and dangerous of an opponent to fight on one leg.

After his fight with Soukhamthath, he didn’t fight again for two years either, due to two run ins with USADA for tainted supplements. Unfortunately, he’s going to need some more time off now that his knee has been tore up. Luckily he’s still only 25-years-old, turning 26 in October.

O’Malley has the gift, the it factor, he’ll come back better than ever, just like he did in March. He’s now 4-1 in the UFC, and 12-1 overall as a professional.

Though it was ruled a TKO (elbow and punches), it could also be considered a TKO (injury) loss. He did get hurt badly by that elbow Vera cracked him with, but he never would’ve ended up on his back if his leg didn’t give out.

It’s great that his ankle and lower leg are fine, but it was evident that the issue was with his knee. We’ll have to wait a few days to see what happens next. Hopefully he only tore one ligament, but even then it can take a while to recover and come back.

Guys like Dominick Cruz and Georges St-Pierre spent over a year outside of the cage with ACL tears alone. Thiago Santos tore all four ligaments in his knee when he fought Jon Jones, that was 13 months ago and he hasn’t fought since. Either way, we probably won’t see O’Malley fight again until next year.

Sean O’Malley is seemingly in good spirits despite his latest setback.

O’Malley met Marlon Vera in the co-main event of UFC 252 on Saturday night. Despite what was an even contest on the feet for most of the fight, O’Malley would end up injuring his ankle which ultimately led to his demise.

He would eventually slip on his own feet and end up receiving ground and pound from Vera before the referee quickly put an end to the contest in the first round.

As a result, O’Malley suffered the first defeat of his professional career as he was carted off following the fight.

While it’s natural that many on social media mocked him for the defeat and labeled this as the end of the hype train, it appears O’Malley received more well-wishes and support as he posted a short message after the fight.

“Love y’all ???

Hopefully, O’Malley’s injury is nothing too serious and he is back in the Octagon sooner rather than later.
